More Pics of the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Add-on

And now, a couple more pics of the Xbox 360's HD-DVD drive add-on. Looking quite like the 360's baby brother, the HD-DVD add-on looks to be roughly the size of an external PC CD/DVD drive. With almost everybody going for smaller tech these days, quite a few people have complained about the add-on's size. Well, honestly speaking, it does look a little big. That won't matter to 360 fans who will want to buy this baby, though. As for us, we're still looking to see how well this thing performs before we give it a thumbs-up.

Damn that sucks. I thought it must be replaced with the original dvd drive, but instead it's a stupid add-on!!!!!

Well.....now the 360 including this hd-dvd drive will be as expensive as the ps3, or maybe more!

» What is that?

Is that thing on the back of the HD-DVD drive the Wi-Fi adapter? It looks like the HD-DVD drive will have USB ports for more connections. Thats cool, because I was wondering where those things were going to be connected. Cool, but I'm not looking foward to it.

Yet another large piece of hardware to compensate for the 360's hardware short comings.(another being the massive external powersupply)

» the price

i heard at E3 the price of a 360 and hte price of the hd-dvd add-on will still be less than a ps3. but i heard its not gonna play games, only have the ability to play movies. but i dont know about it. so could somebody confirm that it can play games too?

I heard the same thing. Apparently Gates doesn't think the space on an HD-DVD disk will benefit games. Still, it's gonna be interesting to compare prices of the premium system + the drive to the PS3.

So... Suppose Microsoft gives this a shot, and makes it to where there is the 360, and you CAN get the add-on, to play HD-DVDs. Suppose, then, that they make it to where you can play games through the add-on. Suppose then that there's no way in h311 the games on HD-DVD will fit on regular DVDs, even with resolution looking like $#!+. This would be funny, since that means, you need to buy a $400 360, a $??? (maybe $?,???) just to play some games, and people realize the PS3's price is MUCH BETTER. I'm not biast to SONY, but Microsoft seems to be screwing up a wobbley foundation already, Nintendo's competing with itself and nobody cares, and Sony's being laughed at because of a price? This is all screwed up. I'm going to play SMW on my SNES while using my Windows '98 FE laptop, and using my original Walkman, just like it used to be in the good old days.

Now personaly I like the idea of a single drive for the hd. Seems to me that instead of useing the game drive get worn out with all my movie watching (and yes I do watch alot of movies) plus this will want to make me get even more movies to wear out that drive but wait my game drive is still sitting pretty with just the games to thank ^^

Like anyone's going to buy a piece of add-on for a system that have it's short comings. HD-DVD should have been there in the first place. Microsoft is just screwing the Xbox fan base. Lol.

» IDIOTS!!

I see nothing but idiots on this page commenting. The key word here is "OPTION"...Look it up people!! They are not forcing u to buy it, if u want it, u buy it..plain and simple. I myself will not be getting it just because i dont watch movies that much, so i can enjoy my 360, just the way it is... a gaming machine. Sony NEVER gave u that option!!Its like buying a brand new pc with a built in hddvd player/burner or a bluray player/burner. I myself just use the computer to websurf and/or download stuff. now, will i need all that other stuff with it??!! HELLNO!! So, there!!

so dont get me wrong here...i am not a fanboy of anything

!! I plan on getting a ps3, in fact i already got a couple on reserve. but it would have been nice if sony gave me the "OPTION" if i wanted a hi-def movie player also.

just my 2 cents worth..like it or hate it...ita the GODDAMN FACT!!

die fanbiotches!! die in your "company name here" panties!! hahahahahaha!!

I know Sony didn't give on option for a Blu-Ray player, but it is needed for the PS3 games. Sony said that they weren't going to release game on any other format except BD-ROM's, so you're going to need the it. If you were given the option to take off the BD drive, then you wouldn't be able to play any PS3 games. The BD drive is for both the games and movies.

Yeah Like some dude said, Mi¢ro$oft is giving you the 'OPTION' of getting what you want. For instance, Wi-Fi, not many people use WiFi, they used a wired connection. That is an option where i dont need WiFi, Im not forced to buy it. Currently, I dont have a HDTV, so i really dont need HD-DVD, again an option if i want to buy it or not... Whilw Sony is forcing you to buy Bluray...

@ 12 : since most of the games that will come out on ps3 will be the same ones as on 360 and that the 360 games fit on a DVD, so normaly ps3 games won't ever really need to be on blueray...

I think 15 hit the nail on the head there. A lot of people don't really want to buy all of their DVDs again as HD-DVD so not everyone is bothered getting a HD-DVD player but the reason Sony is using the BD-Drive is it's trying to get Blu-Ray into peoples homes through the back door by putting it in a games console...

by daz - 2006-08-01 20:07
» so...

n@ 16, while you obviously know what developers are doing with PS3 games, why don't you tell the world why they don't really need to use bd-rom discs?

All PS3 games won't be on bd-rom. Like Ps2, there will be a mix of what format the games are on (on PS2, some games featured on CD's eg Lego star wars). BD-rom will be used to its full capacity, a games developer isnt going to waste money on using a format, then only use 4-7gig on it, it would be a complete waste of money for any company to do that when they could user the cheaper dvd medium.

People also think that the actual game size is going to be 25gig+ or something. It might not be. Like i've said in other forums, i know EA in warrington UK have been looking at what could be added as extras to the game. Rather like DVD films, you can have behind the scenes vids, storyboards, links to websites, even previous games on past generation consoles (recently, Fifa 06 offered the very 1st Fifa game as an extra).

If you did a little research into developers using blu-ray, you'd find some of them talking about making a one disc for all regions, so all languages through the entire game can be stored on one disc i.e, you wouldn't have to make a whole batch of games for japs, then europe, then america etc, you create just one big btach used for all languages.

Theres alot more benefi from blu-ray (and HD-DVD) to dvd. I remember the same arguement from CD to DVD, and look how huge and important DVD has become.

As for the option thing, true Sony isnt giving you the option to have it or not, you simply just get it whether you like it or not. Is this a bad thing? Not really, again it happened with DVD, we weren't given the option, it was just given to us. Sony aren't marketing this as a games machine though, they rather c0cked up by marketing it as a computer, which in reality it isnt, the thing im typing my entry on is a computer. Its a home entertainment device, its a device for people, like me, who want an all in one system, something i can play games on in HD, something i can watch movies on in HD, something i can browse the net on if my PC is playing up or being used. People can argue about 360, saying they dont need hd-dvd ad on or to use live, but if you arent using these functions, then you spent alot of money just so you can play prettier games than ps2 and xbox. I own a 360, its great, but i make full use of it, ive not spent alot of my money to buy a machine and only tap into half of its potential. I might not need xbox live or hd-dvd when that arrives, but if i do have it then at least im making the most out of the money i have spent now, rather than doing it months down the line and realising what i might have missed out on. I seriously think unless you make the most out of these features on any console, all you would have bought is a tarted up verison of your previous console. Fanboys might not like it, but if you arent using HD or anything, then its he truth.

» Xbox 360 a game system

Xbox 360 is first and foremost a GAMING system, sure it doesn't have a High definition disk drive but guess what, it is capable of playing High definition GAMES and that's the whole reason i bought my Xbox 360, sure it would have been nice to have High Definition movie playback, but when i was thinking about the next Xbox system all i could think about is GAMES, movies never entered my mind, and why is that you may ask?, because i wanted to play next generation GAMES.

through ur name alone (Xbox is the best) im just going to completely ignore ur whole comment.

Tell me, unless you bought a HDTV, how exactly are you playing these high definition games, because to see these games in HD, you need to have a HD compatible TV (hence the HD cable you get with the premium pack). Im not attacking 360, like i said, i own one and its great. I never owned an xbox, but i did play on one alot at my friends, and for me the 360 is a glorified update of the original xbox. It does nothing new and brings nothing new. People can argue and say games are HD, but this was a natural step, it was bound to happen at some point. If xbox fans dont like it, tough, try and prove me wrong by actually PROVING, ot saying "Xbox is the best cos i say so". And why are these games for 360 "next generation"? because they look prettier. Does looking better mean it entitles the console to be "next gen". It doesnt bring a new way of playing games, the games are still on last gens format (DVD, not HD-dvd or blu-ray). Again, xbox fans might not like it, but its true. Infact the only game i do play on my 360 is pro evolution soccer 5 (or winning eleven, depending on what region your from) and thats only so i can play it online

Personally i dont buy enough movies to warrant either a blu ray or HD DVD player. My 360 does what its supposed to which is play xbox 360 games and it already outputs in 1080i so i dont see what the problem is.

_______________ _______________ _______________ _______________ ________

Lets hope we do need Bluray. At least the options there for game developers to push the limits. Really a few games come close to filling a DVD-9 formated disc. Now game developers don't have an excuse to make anything less than quality cinematic looking gameplay on a true next generation system. I for one would not expect anything less. These are the games I personally look for.

» bd making of game extra

Yeah blueray will have the option to put in extra content and all that but the reason 360 doesn't is because of market place. Xbox owners get to see all that before the game comes out because you just download it and it's great promo for the game that's on it's way to the shelves... Now if you use up all the space for extra content what's that gonna do for you? You already bought the dang game where as if you had live you could of seen it all before the game came out

» Good

I'm glad they didn't put an HD DVD drive to spike the price.

To be honest, like Cliffy B said, its supposed to be working SMARTER not harder. All this is going to do is get the lazy developers to not learn how to compress, and instead just leave everything the way it is.

Blu ray isn't going to be needed for at least another 3-5 years, and by that time the new systems will be coming out. And please, don't let sony fool you with their "10 year" system promise, I'm sure thats as authentic as when we all were going to jack into the matrix on PS2 ;).

Thank God my $360 wasn't $500 for something I'm NOT going to use.

By the way, whoever said that they are porting games are right, trust me, new compression methods come out DAILY, blu ray isn't going to be needed for a good while, but you let sony make you believe you really need it.

Lol, sony bringing something new to the table, great, I needed an HD format that's buggy as hell and isn't even the standard in the industry yet, thanks Sony!

HD-DVD's have not even come out yet?Why do I see poeple cumming in thier pants over this? HD-DVD's are'nt even out yet. And we dont even know how much support HD-DVD's are gonna get. Some of you want to go so far as to pay microsoft more money for this. Sad, so sad. My point is, they have'nt even come out yet, we dont know the support of this, and would YOU really pay that much xtra money to see the next lara croft in a better quality? Whats wrong with DVD's? Im not much of a DVD fan, i wait about 6 months after the dvd and watch it on TV. There is currenly nothing wrong with DVD's. HD movies will cost a fortune probably. @ #21

"I never owned an xbox, but i did play on one alot at my friends, and for me the 360 is a glorified update of the original xbox. It does nothing new and brings nothing new."

Maybe that's why you don't get what's new. Xbox Live Marketplace, where you can download arcade games, videos and more. You can demo games that aren't out yet without even getting up off your a$$. Xbox Live in general has gotten an overhaul. You can stream your own music from your pc IN-GAME. The controller is improved by all accounts.

" It doesnt bring a new way of playing games, the games are still on last gens format (DVD, not HD-dvd or blu-ray)."

If next gen games don't fill up a DVD, then what's the point of forcing a newer, more expensive media on the consumer? If you don't want to pay for HD-DVD, don't get the add-on drive. If you don't want to pay for Blu-Ray, don't get a PS3. It's that simple.

#26 makes some good points on dev's being allowed to get lazy with more space, I mean, look at pc computing. More storage has to more crappy code, just cause they dont' have to worry about cleaning it up, there's space for all the crap that should be removed before retail(Can you say Hot Coffee?)

Some improvements are inevitable. But that's a good thing; if these elements (graphics especially) didn't improve significantly from generation to generation, we'd be *****ing about it now.

Personally, I don't want an all new way to play games, or have to pay huge amounts for the privilege. I like how games are played now, they just need the logical and insightful improvements to keep coming so we stay interested.

And from this point on I think we can now take the games that are coming out now as representative of 360, not like the rough first draft crap that comes out when a console drops... Look at PS2's launch, how long did it take for a worthwhile game to surface? Keep it in mind when you criticize.

» Add-on will cost 200+?

So far there wont be any economical way for the Add-on to be 100 or less. So it cant compete with the PS3 when it comes to price if you buy the add-on.

If they do indeed make it 100 bucks or less then the add-on will the the cheapest HD-DVD player on the market. Since its a USB add-on device then that means PC users can use it as well.

The cost of HD-DVD drives for PCs are looking to be over 300 bucks and thats just for a reader, not a writer. So its my assumption that thiss add-on will be around 200 maybe 300 bucks. Any less, and microsoft may be taking a huge financial hit to get the add-on to sell.
