Sony has the PSP, Nintendo has the DS. For years, Microsoft has left the two slug it out on the handheld gaming market - perhaps until now. Well-placed sources within the publisher have told TeamXbox.com that Microsoft is in the final stages of a "digital entertainment handheld."

One of the sources made use of an "xYz" moniker for the handheld, emphazing the Y and suggesting that the "digital entertainment handheld" sits in between the Xbox and Zune platforms - perhaps a combination of gaming and media playback. Although the source did point out that the name has not been decided yet, the "Y" was simply to highlight the would be features of the new device.

Another source confirmed the existence of the handheld at least since December of last year, describing the device as "unlike anything on the market today." The source added that the only way to describe it is to "think of a mashup of the Sony Mylo, the PSP, and the iPhone...errr the iPod Touch; [the MS handheld] doesnÂ’t need access to a phone network."

Â“Although the Microsoft handheld is definitely a converged device, this is not a Zune Phone,Â” the source added. Â“Microsoft wonÂ’t compete with its Windows Mobile customers.Â” What it is would be primarily be Â“a portable game console and a media player.Â” The "xYz" supposedly sports a WVGA screen, with "hardware features not found on any handheld on the market."

It's definitely not the first time for us to hear about a Microsoft gaming handheld. Bill Gates himself has hinted on such a device way back in 2006. Although UK Xbox xec Neil Thompson put the rumors to rest in the same year, it appears that the motion-sensing device isn't the only hardware on Microsoft's plate right now.

even though it would be risky to release a handheld now, and even though i like sony more than microsoft... ever since i got my PS3, and tried remote play with PSP.

i've wanted microsoft to do the same, not necesarily remote play, but atleast a handheld xbox... more money than i can possibly pay, but i think it would be awesome if microsoft released a handheld none the less...

and before anyone else says it: Yes, i know it!

i'm very weird, strange, phsycotic, and all that.. did i miss something??

well. the point is, i would like to see a handheld from MS

If MS is smart as they seem to be they know is to late and will fail here, Nintendo and Sony have a strong public in handhelds...Sony tried first and they won a place in handheld market, NEO GEO failed, Sega failed...MS will do the same

Not that i really like MS but i think they would be stupid not to try to expand and compete in this kind of area. And if they made something good then everyone would be competing more and it would raise the bar and give more options. i mean it would be kinda like when they first released the xbox. im a sony fan boy but i hope MS does make a good hand held.

Was it "too late" in 2001 when they released the XBox and gained a good foothold in the console market? With something fresh they might take a good share of the handhelds as well.

at that time we only had PS2 and DC was fading fast...Game Cube wasn't out either...beasides...it was it that Big of a competition even if it would have came the same date as PS2

If the iPhone's pathetic attempt at gaming succeeds, then I'll have to say the handheld market is getting too crowded. I think it's best for the consumers to have two giants duke it out than 3-4 contestants of average strength engage in a battle royal. Just look the constant one-upmanship betweent ATI and NVIDIA.

If it was real there would be a red ring on that thing in the picture., am i right or what? ;) Looks more like a keychain, I bet it'll play Heavy Rain though, just fine.. all joking aside it probably will have one thing all the other portables don't, that being a super high failure rate!
