More fighting words from Microsoft's Shane Kim

Shane Kim - Image 1Shane Kim is a perplexing person. Not only does he fail to adequately explain why Shadowrun costs more on one format compared to another, he also brings some less-than-positive comments to bring up Microsoft's status in the console wars just a little higher.

In an interview with Shack News' Chris Remo, he manages to praise Nintendo (and then take the praise back) and say some fighting words on Microsoft's behalf against the PlayStation Network. Of course, there's a ton of new information on Xbox Live and the direction of Microsoft with regard to pricing, but there's still a lot of enmity there.

Some choice tidbits?
  • After praising Nintendo for being "very smart" in bringing in new blood into the games arena, he also manages to mention that "In the long run, if they really attract more people to the industry, that's good because we think we've got the best overall solution."
  • Comparing the PlayStation Network's Home application and Xbox Live services, he says "PlayStation Network is not Xbox Live, it's not even close. To think about layering [Home] on top of that--wow."
It's definitely polarizing, how he words it, and we certainly hope these big boys can play nicer in the future. Still, information is information. You'll definitely want to go take a look. To do just that, click on the Read link below for more fighting words from Mister Kim.

...Microsoft stop saying that XBL is better than PSN all the time and start backing it up with reasons WHY it is better, because having owned both services I can tell you that XBL holds NO stand-out benefits to PSN, so theoretically when PS Home is released then the entire PSN service should emulate XBL.

Are you forgetting it has 10 times more content?

There was 4 free demos released in the past week (Forza 2, BlackSite: Area 51, PoTC, Viva Pinata). New Halo 2, Crackdown, Gears of War, Graw 2 content, just to name the most popular. 2 months of quality Xbox Live Arcade titles, and we are now getting 2 arcade titles a week to choose from. All have free trials, leaderboards and online play.

Xbox Live is kicking ass where it counts, game content. PSN has a long way to go before it offers what we get on a weekly bases.

» HAXorz why dont you ge press the JUMP IT UP button for the PS3 real bad news

PS3 owners seem to have forgotten where the jump it up button is when it comes to the PS3 and bad news, go look at the PS3 Two main bits of real bad news for the PS3 and the few people who have jumped it up, so everyone lets play the PS3 game and go JUMP UP the bad news about the PS3 sales against the Wii/360 and that most Japanese developers are going for the Wii over the PS3..

Demos are free to all users actually. So are trial versions on arcade games and you don't need a gold account to purchase arcade games.

And oh yeah, 5 demos, I forgot about the Eternal Sonata Demo.

» Comment Ratings

Dont forget about how they also like to give every pro-ps3 comment a positive rating and all other comments negative ratings. I find that more pathetic than them jumping up actually, cuz someone wastes time actually rating comments based on fanboyism.

» Live is miles in front of PSN

I own all three consoles, like I have stated a bazillion times before, and trust me, XBL is better than PSN by miles. If it wasnt, do you really think 6mil people would pay for it?

Like Devise has stated, it just has so much more content. Arcade games, demos, videos, themes, pictures, trailers, movies...yes, I know PSN has these things, but its nowhere near the ammount that XBL has.

@ XxBigPoser123xX

I just find it funny that for the same price of a ps3 Devise can have a 360 and four whole years of Live. I just find it funny that you have the little emo kid Xs in the front and back of your name. I just find it funny that you think calling an xbox fan an xbot is going to upset anyone. Its about as original as the Xs in your name. Now, go play your ps3 while people like me, Devise, and all the other pitiful xbots dont have to wait for a good game to play.

thank you 'Devise' + 'AoxomamoxoA' - you've just pointed out why XBOX Live wipes the floor with PSN - the amaont of content being released lately is just amazing - crackdown DLC, GoW DLC, C+C 3 just released, 3 new demo's in about a week + not to mention HALO3 BETA tomorrow!

.....what's that i hear in the background - the faint sound of a PS3 user cheering as he/she just completed another protein-strand > how nice 4 them ; )

» This is not even a news!

Anyway, the guy is saying x360 is better DAH! he's from M$! It's the same with the other guys (Sony guy boosting sony while nintendo guy boost nintendo...) This is NOT a news, and not even a topic worth of discussion. I mean, nobody cares about what Mr McDonald says (if he's still alive, lol) when he says that Mc Do won't makes you BIG. It's the same with this! You need a third party opinion at least. And anyway, fanboyism and war starter topics are useless and are only posted when nobody find something to post since the editors (posters) know that every haters of the console bashed will love the topic even if it's not fun to read, so they'll "jump-it-up" and the site will continu running stupidly. Also, I'm supprised to see there are still that much x360 fanboys in those forums, don't they have something to do sometimes, do they have a life? (I'm only taling about x360 fanboys since I think they are the worst, or at least, I saw more of them then any other console fanboys, I don't know why, maybe it's because that nintendo players are generally non-gamers or younger, so they are not always interrested in those kind of blogs, and because the sony players are usually older. Maybe, I don't know). Also, the XBL is better right now since PSN just started and because the nintendo wii is not done for this kind of things ( no HDD ), but I'm pretty sure that, for movies, the PSN will be much better since sony produce a lot more movies. For the games demos I don't know, ther is not a lot on the PSN and there is not a lot of games too on the ps3, but a lot are coming this year so it's hard to say, maybe it'll become equal? maybe not, dunno. Sony should, like M$, make people pay for the demos for the 1st days, then put it free, it's called free money without getting anyone really angry, for an exemple, I don'T mind waiting 2-3 days instead of paying to be "hot", but the fanboys mind, so it's free money, an it's working great for M$! And for M$, they should REALLY put their online gaming free because nintendo and sony have online matchmaking as good as on XBL for free... And nintendo should lower it's price a bit more (50$ less) since they already make money from there console... But I suppose they keep the high (weird to say) price to keep off some people since they do not have enough units on shelves to lower it more.. I suppose the price will drop as soon as they can have more units..!

PS: I hate stupid fanboys (smart fanboys also... err no, there is not smart fanboys, lol.)

» @ XxBigPoser123xX

Funny you mention a backup copy of Crackdown being able to play the Halo3 beta, because you cant sign into Live with a backup game, and you most certainly couldnt sign into the Beta since you need the disc to access it. Nice try though, E for effort.

And thanks for commenting on my name, I think its kinda cool as well. ;)

Don't forget the commitment to updates (enhancements and fixes, major and minor) from Microsoft. Hate if you want, but it's definitely a part of what we pay for. We know what we're getting. Who is to say that when Sony suffers a bad quarter the first thing to go wouldn't be the out-of-pocket development that goes into PSN updates.

by HAXorz - 2007-05-15 04:56
» true...

Its fair to say that XBL does have more content available than PSN, but that is a given considering that it has been available for a year longer, and that doesnt really warrent it being a 'better' service.

Ive yet to see XBl offer high quality downloads along the lines of GTHD and Tekken DR, and PSN also offers better quality arcade games such as Calling all Cars and flOw, while XBL has a large number of re-releases.

With XBL you are getting quantity while with PSN you are getting quality. Thats just my opinion anyway.

» Not surprising

If the people at QJ would stop seeing blood, he didn't dog Nintendo. He just said if Nintendo gets people who don't normally play videogames playing, then there would be a good chance they might also buy a 360. Of course he says the 360 is the best....he works for MS.

Did you expect him to say, "I give props for Nintendo for expanding the demographics of gamers, but I don't see how that will help us because the 360 is really junk and won't interest the new blood."

No comment on PS Home other than it seems like Sony's gonna have to work to get that fully functioning. It's not impossible, others who have done something similar are just saying it's rugged.

New Crackdown download content > entire PSN

by F U!!!! - 2007-05-15 12:01
» what the hell is wrong with this site?! >:(

Why is it that QJ continues to bash the 360? What is their problem? Jealous Sony/Nintendo fanboys maybe. Maybe they like the horrible Wii graphics and the less-than-stellar PSN network? I don't know!

by Jobo50 - 2007-05-15 16:39
» PSN

PSN is crap, what do you expect though, the damn PS3 still doesn't have a game worth the purchase, Motorstorm is too repetitive and R:FOM looks like Half Life with mascara on!

Home is a cover up for Sonys inability to add some features to the PS3. Wow I can make a character and have him or her dance like a muzza, Wow and how does this make the 2 only games people play on the PS3 any better again?

Sony thought they were ready for "next gen" truth is they can't get out of the "last gen" which is why the PS2 is still selling so well because it took them 6 years to learn how to use their hardware, only now do games on the PS2 look decent.

by Hellraiser - 2007-05-15 23:31
» .

At least when the next XBOX comes out 2010 or 2011, the PS3 may have some decent games finally! It may be finally afordable by that time too! The graphics will just be pathetic in comparison to PC and the new XBOX, maybe even the 360 still. Maybe sony can have a decent network by then? No, probably not. Home serves two purposes for sony, a cover up for PSN's suckiness with a cute GUI and as a moneymaker because they regret making it free. They can charge for apartment accessories, clothes, etc, as well as put advertising everywhere! It's not going to be that great.
