More engine problems: Mistwalker Studios talks Unreal Engine 3 woes

Mistwalker's Lost Odyssey - Image 1Epic Games has already been reeling from a number of developers complaining about the Unreal Engine 3, and now another one has cropped up. Mistwalker Studios, makers of Blue Dragon, has something to say about the game engine as well.

Ars Technica's Frank Caron was able to chat with Hees Kyung, global product manager for Microsoft, and was able to ask regarding Lost Odyssey. According to Kyung, their team encountered some problems with the Unreal Engine 3:

The issue was that Epic kept updating the versions, so it was hard to catch up. For example, if they released Unreal Engine 3, version 6.1, which has certain requirements and limitations for graphics, you wouldn't have the tools. It was hard to get the tools and instruments necessary to produce the most updated versions of our software.

Kyung also mentioned some language barrier problems with their staff - Mistwalker is a Japanese company. Add that to the updates and anybody will probably have a hard time keeping up.

We've heard what the other devs (Silicon Knights and Digital Extremes) had to say about Unreal Engine 3. We'll have to wait and see what Epic Games plans to do, though the other devs don't seem to have any plans of suing like Silicon Knights. Stay tuned for further developments.

It makes me mad how they complain about the engine like this. No one is forcing them to use the most extremely recent versions of the engine, what would they rather, that Epic stopped at version 1.0? I work in 3D animation, and almost every other day there is an update that changes the way we would use Cinema4D, Realflow, Maya, you name it, we just stick with the version we use. Sure if there is something that's a big problem, or that adds great value to us, we will update, but you pick and choose. No developer in their right mind will update with every minor revision going. These guys need to get their act together, their wasting a lot of time and money by trying to stay up to the minute with engine updates that don't direct affect them. I personally applaud Epic for keeping so up to date with the engine, they are no doubt working around the clock to take care of issues developers have with the engine, and it's those that should be interested in the updates and bug fixes. If a version works for you, stick with it.

It sounds like Mistwalker is simply talking candidly about their development cycle. Just that some asshat is trying to ride the news wave generated by the Silicon Knights story and is sensationalizin g this 'issue'

They paid for the engine you idiots.

If Epic showed you what was capable with their engine, and then sold it to you, and you couldnt come up with results you were promised...that you paid for, and was outlined perfectly in a written contract, why shouldnt the developer be a little bit upset?

Especially in the case of the silicon knights. They paid Epic to teach them the tricks of the trade when it came to UE 3.0, and Epic took the money they paid them, and built Gears of War with it. Epic is keeping secrets about the engine. Just look at half the UE 3.0 games that are out right now. None of them look remotely close to GeOW, or UT3, except for maybe Mass Effect. Bioware however, is extremely talented, and it doesnt suprise me they pulled off some extreme results.

You people are morons, seriously.
