Moore Speaks Out Against Backward Compatibility

PeterPeter Moore, a Microsoft executive, voiced his strong opinions about backward compatibility in relation to the XBox 360. Moore seems to think that backward compatibility means nothing to players.

"Nobody is concerned with about backwards compatibility anymore." Moore said. "We underpromised and overdelivered on that. It's a very complicated thing... Very complex work. I'm just stunned that we have hundreds of games that are backwards compatible."

Original XBox games are played on the 360 through emulation, a process that has many limits and restrictions. This was a poor choice for the feature and greatly impaired the idea behind it.

"More [backward compatible games] are coming. At some point, you just go, 'That's enough, let's move on!'. People aren't worried about a game being backwards compatible - and I like to think we've upheld our end of the bargain in making at least two or maybe three hundred games backwards compatible" he  further added.

It seems as if other executives follow Moore's lead, backward compatibility will be phased out shortly. Even though many games have already been ported, there are still a lot left. If Microsoft gave up on the feature, many fans would be disappointed.

Its really sucks that Moore thinks this way.

There are a bunch of xbox games I wouldnt mind playing on my 360. Sheesh there arent many great 360 games out anyways.

Thinking of Nintendo's Virtual Console... makes me wonder how well it will be received by the public. Personally I can't wait to download games on the Wii. Just to relive the old great moments one more time. I actually loved Conker's Bad Fur Day that much I even considered buying a xbox just for live and reloaded. Well, I didn't and so I had my hopes up for backwards compatibility on the 360. And now this :(

Oh well, looks like they want to phase out xbox, don't blame them really...but maybe they will keep this in mind for the future xbox...

It's only useless to M$ coz they can't do... properly... nubs.

When BC is successful like it is on the Playstation 2 it allows developers to continue developing games for the previous console without worrying about the platform being obselete.

Sucks to be M$... i don't care about BC but if it ain't 100% there's no point.

# Backwards Compatibility doesn't matter to meGuest 2006-05-31 23:51
Though right now I do not currently own a Xbox360 I do own an original Xbox. I got mine only 3 1/2 years ago. I plan to purchase an Xbox 360 in the coming months, but won't be getting rid of my Xbox as long as I have original xbox games to play on it. If I could just copy all of my data over from harddrive to harddrive I would care about backwards compatibility. But since some data stored on my harddrive is unmovable, I won't be getting rid of my xbox anytime soon.

Just a note, even though the Gameboy Advance/SP are backwards compatible to the original Gameboy Games, I still own an original Gameboy, Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Color.

And I also own an original PSX and PSOne though I own a PS2. So as you can all see, backwards compatibility means nothing to me.

# Don't careGuest 2006-06-01 00:17
I could care less about backwards compatibility......I thought it was cool at first when PS2 came out, but I never played any PS games on it, like I thought I would.......I will just play my XBOX for that.....I do understand the positive things about it, but at some time even Sony will have to stop doing it........You just can not have all your consoles be this way.......But this is coming from someone that buys all the systems............

"Original XBox games are played on the 360 through emulation, a process that has many limits and restrictions. This was a poor choice for the feature and greatly impaired the idea behind it."

You realize the PS3 is following the same model, right? They've already stated that unless developers followed strict guidlines (and many do not), Sony can't guarantee BC. Adding hardware compatibility, which seems to be what you prefer, would jack up the console's price even more.

# bad ideaGuest 2006-06-01 00:53
This is a horrible business decision especially since the wii and ps3 will probably have full backward compatibility. I bought my 360 partially because I never owned an XBOX and it was like two systems in one. Many of the launch games are hastilly finished and I like playing some of the better regular XBOX games until some more good ones come out for the 360. Then there's people who sold thier regular xboxes only to find out they won't be able to play old games anymore. I also bought the add on hard drive just for this reason!

Agreed Mr Common Sense, like you I never owned the original xbox hoping buying a 360 will solve that problem (two consoles in one), though Ninja Gaiden Black is the only game I have played using the 360 and to be honest my most played game on the 360, I was hoping for a few others to be compatible, especially Outrun 2 and with the whole VGA issue that they have not solved, the 360 is pretty much useless at handling the job for me.

It was pretty obivious we would catch a sony fanboy on the 360 forum. The only problem is your a pretty damn stupid sony fanboy at that!

Sony is following the same process as the 360 and emulating backwards compatible games.

There was only one thing that i hated about the 360 and thats because it didnt have a web browser,

But maybe that will come soon seeing as Nintendo Wii and the PS3 will be getting one...

BC is not important? Is he nuts. Why did they try to include it if it wasn't important? Why is every system now jumping on the BC bandwagon.

Backwards compatibility is great. When my PS1 died, my PS2 was the perfect choice for so many great titles which I borrowed from friends.

What I love about my PSP is that I can play SNES games. And now that it will have a PS1 emulator it becomes that much better.

PS3 is not having the same problems as the 360. They are trying to do the emulation thing like MS but they will have better time with it because the architecture. They did mention that they were having problems with some titles due to the developers not following the guidelines but they are working those kinks out. Unlike MS who see it as a waste of money, Sony loves Backwards compatibility.

Makes me wonder why I even bought this damn 360, oh yeah pirating. The only good thing MS products are for.

# Screw your Microsoft and Sony. They never belonged in gaming anyway. Nintendo is the way to go.Guest 2006-06-01 06:37
This has got to be a joke! So far most people who are posting are complaining and still want BC so that's why I think Moore is full of *****.

Excuse me but I remember a day when this Moore guy said that they will eventually get to 100% BC. That was there way to tell us to stop looking at sony's ps3 BC because we're eventually going to have the same. BUT NOW this is microsofts way of saying screw what we said, we want money. They are NOT holding their part of the deal. I still have many xbox games here, about 95%, that I love and can't play on my 360! They better continue working on this feature otherwise they'll give me another reason to add to the list of why the 360 sucks. Not that I can't already say that.

Wii and DS is the way to go people. Stop spending you money on graphics and buy games for the fun/pleasure aspect. Graphics can last you a couple of hours till you get use to it. A game which is fun can last you till death?

I kept my Xbox for H2 and whatever games come out (like The Godfather), so I don't care about BC on 360. Most of the Xbox games suck on it anyway. H2 is complete garbage on 360. And 99% of the games on PS2 blow, so why anyone would care about the PS3 being BC I don't know.

Oh, and #23, I'm pretty sure emulators that regular people made on their home PCs are a far cry from official backwards-compatible games.

Its like dude was saying in an above post. M$ is downplaying their own mistake. And besides that why would I want to have a XBOX360 next to my XBOX? It looks like crap HOGS more room in the back of my receiver, and well i can't afford a DOLBY digital receiver that has 10 different jacks in the back. So thanks M$..... thank you in you stupid asses!!!

always get f*cked over, never buy soon. Exception? Nintendo.

The early adopter thing also stands very true for Sony, so wait a year before buying, or unless you begin to actually see (not hear about) stuff you would like to play.

And once again, Microsoft screw over it's customers. "We under promised and overdelivered." Lol. Yeah right. It's more like, "We over promised and under delivered." Because so far, not even 5% of all Xbox games work. Booo.

i didnt have an original xbox and half the reason that i bought a 360 was that it was backwards compatible. i was close to buying a xbox last year but decided to wait for the "backwards compatible" 360. so i got it and got halo 1 & 2, Star Wars: KOTOR 1 & 2 and Fable. Which were the only compatible games out that really really interested me. Then came that huge update that added 3 games. whoopeee! I think that the issue with backwards compatibility should be all or nothing none of this crap emulation. The DS is fully compatible with GBA but not GBC. Yet the GBA was compatible with GBC?? Seems strange well Nintendo didnt even need to have GBA support IMO. It was there back up plan in case of people not wanting to abandon there GBA so soon.

But as MS are not Nintendo they are quite happy to continue bending us over the table and giving us a nasty push in the rear. And we all happily take it and continue funding Bill gates and his *****ware.
