Lionhead Studios' Peter Molyneux reportedly got a beating from fans over the ending of Fable II that they were actually forced into rewriting the DLC. Well, of course he wasn't beaten up literally, only by hate mail, but it's not quite hard to imagine how strong the sense of urgency must have been for them to shelf their already-written DLC storyline to accommodate the request demand of the fans for a happier ending.

See (and here is the spoiler, in case you haven't played it), players weren't all too pleased of having to sacrifice everything at the end of the game. As in everything: your pet, your companion, everyone. It caused "such a furor" that the first DLC they sent out eventually had to make leeway for the dog to be returned. They love their dog.

How hateful was the hate mail? He did not elaborate on that, but the lesson we can all pick up here is that, hey, hating does get things done for you.

» I'm all for feedback but...

You know, I am always happy to see that consumer feedback is listened too and the developers try to work it into the games, because thats better for all of us-but hate mail to change the ending of a game?...That seems a little childish. My wife finished Fable 2 and complained about the ending, but if the rest of the game was so great, then don't you think the developer knew what he was doing and wanted the game to end the way he did? Of course, if the ending isn't worth the journey it took to get there, than what makes it worth $60...I don't know-but something about this still seems wrong...

Did you even read the article? They didn't change the game ending people were pissed that in order to get the "good" outcome they had to sacrifice their dog. The devs thought it was a good idea to make the player sacrifice but then they got slapped for it and put in a way to get your dog back, thats it. They didn't change the ending at all. Though in the future they should think twice on things like that.
