Microsoft's Xbox Live account ban only a download restriction

Goodbye downloadsThis is good or bad news depending on who you are, where you come from, and what Xbox Live account you use to access new content. A report from Gamasutra indicates that Xbox Live dummy accounts won't be banned, but they will be getting restricted access.

While our earlier coverage was speculating as to whether fake accounts would be banned, indications now point towards something that won't be as bad as a ban, but might end up being just as bad for download junkies. Microsoft Europe is moving to block content downloads of US goodies among European Xbox Live members.

A statement by Microsoft's Chris Paladino on the Gaming Age boards explains the situation somewhat, though details are still missing for many people:

Details aren't all in yet - but I do know for a fact that we are not banning the accounts. We are blocking downloads in cases where gold accounts are being used to gain U.S. content in foreign marketplaces.

You may want to expect something of this sort to happen across the board soon, but for now, it's a Europe-only deal. The download restrictions may have been put in place to ensure the integrity of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, though other reasons probably abound. Foreign Xbox owners may want to one last download session before the door closes, because no one knows when that'll be.

» Living in the EU sucks

Why should we think about every other country in the world? Its only the EU gamers being stitched up on this for now. And knowing how to spell Neighbour doesn't prove anything.

Once again the EU get screwed over. It's bad enough I have to wait until March to get a PS3 now I can't even enjoy XBL downloads early.

Multi Region consoles my ass.

» yea it sucks....

The game consoles that are native to their country do get everything first...Im from the US so i have the video marketplace, but the 360 IS an American product. Same goes for Sony.... Ps1, Ps2, and PSP all launched there first...still waiting for my psp's GPS and Camera that asia has had since sept or so :(

P.S. if i was you i would wait untill all the bugs are fixed, and the speed is improved because launch day SUCKED! but now everything runs smoothly exept the movie DL's

» Doesn't it always suck for Europe?

It seems like Europe is always getting the shaft from American and Japanese Entertainment industries, such as gaming. A second class customer? maybe.

In Canada, we are lucky to receive all the latest and greatest due to logistical convenience.

In general, everything should be treated as global --not regional.

Why would that never happen? Price fixing and targeted market penetrations.

Some markets are unfairly charged more for a product by the manufacturer while others are not. Case and point is the Xbox 360 sold in Canada as it is not even close to reflecting the currency exchange rates, while the Nintendo Wii is sold based on exchange rates.

I would also like to experience European and other cultures through Video games, not just the American engineered perspective.

Maybe a Canadian or European Console start-up will fix that one day, though I doubt it.

Maybe diversity and common culture is one of the reasons my family and I have always enjoyed Nintendo games so much, especially the Wii. Xbox 360 is great too, though not diverse enough.
