The Dashboard Fall Update for the Xbox 360 goes live today, as promised by Microsoft. Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry Hryb (aka Major Nelson) mentioned that big MS is currently in the process of deploying these updates to Xbox Live.
Hyrb cautioned that that there are several things Xbox 360 owners have to keep in mind during this period of transition:
- YouÂ’ll be prompted to accept the update when you sign into Xbox
Live sometime in the next few hours.
- You will only receive the prompt for the update upon sign in. You wonÂ’t get it in middle of a game.
- Regardless of what you have heard, it's not geographically based. No one area of the world will get it before another.
- If you log out and then back in again, this wonÂ’t force the update, it will only anger people on your friends list who will see you sign in, then out, then in, then out.
- Be patient, everyone will eventually receive the update.
But for starters, here are a few of the most notable ones:
- Xbox Originals: With this new service, announced on November 13, you can download-to-own full original Xbox games that were previously only available at retail
- Xbox Live Arcade Hits: On Xbox Live Arcade, the Arcade Hits program kicks off as some of the best-selling Xbox Live Arcade games become available at permanently reduced prices
- Inside Xbox: A new direct feed brings current news straight from Xbox.com into the Xbox Live Dashboard providing an easy, predictable entry point where you can discover what's new in game releases, events, Xbox Live Marketplace offers, and lots more.
- Enhanced online profile: If you're interested in sharing a few more details about yourself you can go beyond your motto and further personalize your profile with an expanded bio. The extended bios will be visible to "Friends Only" or the entire Xbox Live community.
- Expanded Friends List access: A quick and easy way for gamers to expand their personal community on Xbox Live, members will be able to see the Friends Lists of other Xbox Live members, boosting their social networking experience on the service.
- Enhanced Parental Controls: Family Timer, a strong and flexible new addition to the Xbox 360 Family Settings, enables parents to set the amount of time their Xbox 360 can be used on a per-day or per-week basis by their children or other members of the household.
- New video features: The convenience of full-screen movie previews and enhanced video codec support further expand the options when it comes to the Xbox 360 entertainment experience.
- Easy-to-use navigation features: With several noteworthy changes in the Xbox Live Dashboard, from the new Game Store button to the Video Store button to enhanced visuals and descriptions in the video library, Xbox LIVE members can find what they want, when they want it.

-> Spoken like a true 360 fanboy. Try being only a fan. Maybe you might even gain a little perspective.

It certainly gets the job done, but in comparison falls far short of XBL.
Reply
-> I'm not disputing that. I do agree PSN is not as good as XBL in most respects. Not by a long shot.
But the fact remains that Someone_PR's argument for bashing the PSN features were rooted in Console-loyalty and not in an unbiased comparision of features. Hence I called him (I'm going to assume it's a him) what I did.
What's your argument?

i'm a gaming fan, i don't have an allegiance to one console or the other.
that being said, i purchased a ps3 and promptly returned it when it failed to live up to my expectations. those expectations were based solely on what sony was saying.
the 360 offered more of what i wanted and with these dash updates, it just keeps getting better.
i will purchase a ps3 again, once it is really worth it.
if sony doesnt pull something out of it's hat soon, i may end up just buying more 360s soon...

to make all clear.... you really think that the news feed of the ps3 is a lot better? the 360 one is full screen, with pics and a alot of info, and when said that is a new demo you can download it from there. And the download contents too...
The ps3 one when the 2.0 comes out I had to turn it off bucause that thing froze my ps3 more than one and they didn't put anything until thanksgiving and the other store update...
That ps3 make it first of course but that don't quit that I like the 360 one...
Beside a little things the update was a lot cool, many changes but... it feels empty too for new things

As for the news feed issue, I really can't say as I have not updated my 360 yet (I have both a PS3 and a 360).
As for the freezing issue, here is what I think is happening with the feeds issue for PS3 latest update: the feeds require continually querying for updates, which may cause the PS3 to take a performance hit if the Internet connection is not too fast. I didn't have any issues with my PS3 with the feeds in the latest PS3 update, but then I have a 6 MBps Internet connection.
Also, I didn't understand some of what you said after that. Could you please explain?
Anyway, my point was that you were being unnecessarily critical of the PS3 update when a 360 update was being discussed. I didn't know you actually HAD a PS3 - I thought you were just another 360 fanboy indulging in some PS3-bashing without reason or rhyme.

-> Because I own a 360 (my gamercard is "Man The King". Go check it out). I own several 360 games, including Kameo, PDZ, PGR3, Dead Rising, GRAW, Oblivion Collector's Edition, Bioshock, Halo 3 Limited Edition.
Also, it appears as if you did not read my posts properly, as nowhere have I said bad stuff about the 360 itself. Go read them again. My 360 still works fine after all this time (I bought it in Mar 2006). Why would I say it sucks?
As for my PS3, I like my PS3 over my 360, that doesn't mean my 360 doesn't get any play-time (in fact, for the past month, I've been playing Bioshock and Halo 3).
All I attacked was people's (what appeared to be) irrational bias. I wasn't aware Someone PR owns both consoles, and so I elaborated upon my initial post.
Bottomline, I've NEVER, in ANY post on QJ, said any console sucks. Unlike you, who likes to bash the PS3 without rhyme or reason.
So please don't engage in insults. Anyway, I wasn't even flaming anybody, so I feel your lashing out was unwarranted.

2) I don't care if you do owner a 360, your still a *****.
3) I don't remember ever saying the PS3 sucks, but... only dumb fu*cks. would buy a PS3 because it sucks. There I said it, notice I put some rhyme into that too. ;) Though seriously dude, stop criticizing 360 fans in 360 only threads and go back to your PS3 posts. And stop acting like a little b|tch.

"I don't remember ever saying the PS3 sucks"
-> You must have a REALLY short memory (possibly as short as certain other parts of your anatomy), as you come up on almost every single PS3 post to criticize the PS3.
"I don't care if you do owner a 360, your still a *****"
-> Opinions of *****s like you don't really matter. Were you under the mistaken apprehension that they did?
As for sucking b@1ls, the only thing in the posts on this article that did was your misguided attempt at rhyming :). A poet you are not.
"stop criticizing 360 fans in 360 only threads and go back to your PS3 posts."
-> Well, at least my attempts at criticism are aimed at people and their proper or misguided bias, while yours are aimed at a Console, and rarely, if ever, have any basis in fact.
" And stop acting like a little b|tch"
-> Also, I was being courteous and didn't want to engage in insults, but if what you've put in your post is any indication, as far as coming up with insults is concerned, I'm way out of your league. So it would be advisable for you to just desist from continuing along these lines.

MTK/Thinker
