Microsoft's statement on slow XBLVM HD downloads

Xbox Live Video Marketplace

So. Now that there are already downloadable movies on XBLM, you guys have are probably all hanging out in your living rooms, chilling with your buds (with Buds in hand *bliss*), and enjoying the HD goodness of movies and TV episodes... or NOT?

For the lucky few who haven't been experiencing slow download times, good for you. But unfortunately there are a lot of other Xbox Live users who have been complaining that it takes a really long time to download HD content from the Marketplace. One QJ reader by the name of Wonga told us that he tried downloading "V for Vendetta," but after an hour's worth of waiting, the download progress was down to 4% (!!!).

AND, it gets worse, after seeing the teeny download progress, he watched in shock as the download canceled itself. So he tried re-downloading it, and this time, progress was up to 10% but suddenly an error message popped up saying "V for Vendetta could not be downloaded." What gives? And this is only one of the complaints we've heard of, precisely because Wonga posted a comment in our Xbox360 site, but we're guessing some of you guys have also experienced the same thing.

Apparently, Microsoft has heard the complaints, and has issued the following statement regarding slow downloads in XBLV:

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the new full-length content following the launch on Xbox Live Marketplace we are aware some gamers are experiencing temporary difficulties accessing content, due to the volume of demand. Download times will vary depending on broadband speed and size of content, and we expect the current issues some gamers are experience will be resolved soon.

Well, that's that guys. But at least we know that MS is aware of the problem and hopefully all these issues will be worked out soon. We'll keep you posted for more.

Wow. It seems with the 360, even when problems appear, microsoft is there to fix them right away. Go MS!

» over-nighted it

I left it downloading over-night, and what do you know, it canceled AGAIN! Was running for about 8 hours probably, and got to around the 55% mark, give or take a few. Luckily though, I did not lose all my progress for once, so when I tried re-downloading it it shot straight to 48%. But since it's a day off for everyone today, lots of people are on, and I'm getting about 1% every 10 minutes. Only 500 minutes to go!

» ugh

i have a cable connection and the downloads speeds are still god-awful. the movie expires in 14 days...hell, it might take me 14 days to dl the movie. ;_;

» yeah pretty bad...

I downloaded today and had some lagg, dunno why, the speed of XBL dropped for 3-4min, like I could not even check the demos , the list refreshed in about a minute!!!

and my net was perfect!...

dunno, XBL is pretty cheap from my point of view.. ( I have cable connexion )

and I didn't have the chance to try the ps3, so I don't know whose the best is we compare each other. Anyway, I'll buy a ps3 next year, with the great games!

» Well...

It's not THAT slow....from the post, getting 4% of a 5 gig file is the same as 55k/s.

Also 1% is 50 megs, so 50 megs every 10 minutes is not THAT bad....

You must just realize that these movies are HUGE, and I wouldn't even try downloading them with any less then a 10 mbit cable connection....

by wonga - 2006-11-23 13:30
» I realize that

but there's still something going on. I recently downloaded the Lost Planet MP demo, which was around 126 MB, in 10 minutes, maybe less. This was at the same time I was trying to get the movie (about 12 pm PST, when lots of kids are on before Thanksgiving dinner) So something is seriously wrong with the HD movies.

Microsoft usually fixes things fast, I have no doubt it will be rectified within 14 days.

BTW I have the more expensive Comcast package, 8 MBps down, which obviously you do not get, more like half that max, but it's still the most popular package around (I believe Comcast has ten million subscribers now). If that can't download this nothing can, except maybe some ISPs in the UK

Jason, did you download an SD movie? If so, those, as well as TV shows, have no problems, at least nothing as extreme as what's going on with the HD movies. What I'm trying to download is V for Vendetta in HD, which I think is the largest file on the Marketplace at 6.1 GB.

by Shatterdome - 2006-11-23 14:14
» Actually...

I am on 10 mbit down 1 mbit up cable, and they just released a 24 mbit down package....Canada has better internet...

They said they were using seperate servers for the HD movies, I guess they are just congested and MS will have to put up more servers....

by rolly poly - 2006-11-23 14:30
» size means nothing...

50 megs in 10 minutes is pretty bad.

i'm downloading the jericho pilot and it's going at about ~8-9% an hour. 11+ hrs to download a 45min ep is unacceptable.

i'm getting speeds around 45kBps, i max my upload at 3X that.

by Mau - 2006-11-23 15:50
» I

too got very slow downloading rates!

by Vecha - 2006-11-23 17:23
» huh?

xbl is pretty cheap?

what great games for the ps3?

by Vietone - 2006-11-23 21:30
» What do you expect?

For a 1080p Video its around 100MB per Minute.

For 720p its around 35MB per Minute

Compress the video into a container that can be extracted and maybe you can drop it to 30MB/Minute for 720p and 70-80MB for 1080p.

Its Huge files. Therefore if several thousands people are trying to get these movies, well, the XboxLive servers will get hit with massive bandwidth issues.

by Xbox is the best - 2006-11-23 22:23
» it will improve

tv and movie downloads will improve just like the game downloads did, microsoft just needs to add more servers.

» They

They shouldn't have even made an announcement, and just let people freak out.

It dropped like two days ago, common sense should tell you that there are potentially millions of people trying to download these files, of course the first few days are going to be hectic.

by otacon - 2006-11-24 04:39
» True

I been trying to download episode 6 of supernatural for two days now. It downloaded the first time and glitched saying I didn't have the right to view the content. And it downloaded once more and the sound cut out after 30 seconds. I normally would have said screw it, but since i dont have a credit card I have a ***** of a time trying to get those ms points.

» cheapo

would you look at that...Microsoft cheaped out.
