Microsoft's resistance proves futile against Forza 2 racism

With high customization options, comes great responsibility - unfortunately, a few naughty players in Forza Motorsport 2 might have been sick at home when they taught that in gamer school, as racism is still very much rampant in the game despite Microsoft and Turn 10's best efforts. We get you all the details with this rather disconcerting abuse of Forza 2's best customization feature yet.

As we all know, Forza 2 lets you go crazy with artistic license with the game's Paintjob Editor, a feature that allows you to customize the way your car looks. While this itself has produced some of the most gorgeous-looking paint-jobs we've seen, it's also given rise to some paint-jobs that border from the slightly-disturbing to the downright offensive. One such example, from the source link we've given below, shows a car displaying "White Power" and a swastika on its chassis.

It's not that Turn 10 didn't see this coming, though. Since day one of the game's release, they've taken measures to prevent this sort of thing from happening, closing auctions involved with these sort of cars, as well as putting up an abuse report system where eagle-eyed players can report offensive auctions. A look at the current auctions, though, will reveal that this isn't quite working as it should.

Here's hoping Turn 10 and Microsoft steps it up a notch in dealing with this kind of issues. Artistic license is all well and good, but when you're stepping on someone's heritage or condition, it's not all fun and games anymore.

lols

And nary a comment about how forza is bricking 360's all over the place.

Exactly

I've got a problem with the whole "white power" thing, and no I'm not black or Hispanic, I'm white, but freedom of speech and expression are rights granted to all US citizens by the Constitution. And as far as I know, you can express yourself anywhere, even in the Forza 2 Car Editor
by - 2007-07-03 16:50:41
Free speech...

...doesn't mean you can say whatever you like, where ever you like, when ever you like it. At what point do you (fanboy and qw) consider such behaviour online as going too far? Or do you believe there should be no limits because of 'free speech'? I guess it's fine then for a peadophile to design a car with an image of an adult having sex with a child because afterall, it's freedom of expression, right? He has a right to express himself anywhere, even in Forza, right? Or if you're concerned about the law, how about a car completely covered in swear words, or perhaps a car celebrating the success of the terrorist act which killed all those people on September 11th 2001. Again, freedom of expression, right? Free speech and freedom of expression is a right, yes, but such rights are not there to be abused, especially at the expense of others.

damn...

i bet if somebody created a car with the words "black power" on it, nobody would scream "racism". fools...
by - 2007-07-04 00:15:21
What are you talking about?

They wouldn't scream "racism" because it isn't racist. Celerating your own race isn't racist, but showing hatred towards another race IS.
by - 2007-07-04 00:26:12
Agreed

I completely agree with you. This is solely based on the fact of what whites have done in the past (Slavery, KKK, Nazism, etc) I mean you see all of these things like Black Power, Asian Pride, Hispanic Pride, etc are on windshields of cars in Real Life and most just turn the other cheek. Isn't it roughly the same thing. We all know of the messed up ***** that white people have done because a lot of us were educated by American Schools so a lot of us know of the KKK, Nazism, blah blah blah etc etc. It like saying that when a white person does something racial whether or not offensive, it's portrayed as racism. Example: White guy kills black guy + hate crime. Black guy kills white guy + Self-Defense or something else. I'm not saying that this is a stereotype and it happens all the time and its always this way. But rather, it happens sometimes. And in regards to Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression/Opinion. That is limited to protected speech. That would be "I like Puppies" or "I Hate Bush" etc. Unprotected Speech is screaming "Fire in a movie theater" when there really isn't one. Saying the "N" word in a public area. Saying Bomb on an Airplane. Anything that could be harmful or offensive to a group of people is unprotected speech. But perhaps saying "I'm gay" in a public area could piss a few people off that why we have "Don't Ask Don't Tell" Within a private setting you can say whatever you want but in a public setting like Forza you can't. To white power car guy, Repaint your damn car and stop pissing people off.

It's not the same thing Meow.

" I mean you see all of these things like Black Power, Asian Pride, Hispanic Pride, etc are on windshields of cars in Real Life and most just turn the other cheek. Isn't it roughly the same thing." If this guy just had "White Power" on his car then yes it would be the same, even though would still question his motives for putting such words on his car, Just the same, he still wouldn't be doing anything wrong. BUT, he ALSO puts a swastika on its chassis, and therefore the message he is sending out is clearly more than saying he's proud to be white, but that he has a hatred towards certain races. In otherwords, there is clearly a racist intent in his car design. So no, it's not the same as Black Power, Asian Pride, Hispanic Pride, etc.

i dont think you even read what he wrote
by - 2007-07-04 08:20:31
Actually I have read it jayhawker09

He made some good points, except for one which I disagreed with, which was about the term "White Power". If this guy only had White Power written on his car, then yes, Meow would have been right to say it's the same as "Black Power". However, (and this is an important point) that guy ALSO had a swastika on the car, which means he is not using the term "White Power" to express pride in being white (which would have been fine), but is using it as a statement of white superiority. Therefore it was clearly a racist message. Hence I do agree with Meow in general, but not on this specific point.

To summarise

"White Power" on it's own is not racist (even if some protest, it's still not racist). But "White Power" together with a nazi symbol (adopted by neo-nazis) IS racist.

Poop...

Who freaking cares. I'm white all I see when driving or shopping, or even just watching TV is racism against me. BET, Black Starz, Black HBO, please. Wheres all the "white" channels. Billboards for colleges with all African Americans and music schools with not a single white student advertised. Give me a break. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that, ummmm gold chains, 40s, and spinners are disrespectful to me. Sure the Swastika and, and white power are racist but today in America everyone is. There is not a day I don't walk through town and not see a African American "grill" me. Why cause I'm white. NOT all white people are Nazis or racist. As I recall the blacks in this country would still be picking cotton if not for the 100K + Americans that died for their freedom. So honestly just turn an eye on it. 500 racist things to a white slip by, but one act of racism to an African American is blown up.
by - 2007-07-04 22:50:35
You a$$hole

When ever we have stories like this, there's always a loser like you who tries to justify your OWN predudice with some pathetic tale about how YOU or your race are hard done by in life (and this goes to people from all races btw). Who gives a f@ck about you? IMO, you need to grow a backbone, because all you've shown yourself up to be is racist coward who lashes out at those he's afraid of and convinces himself that it's fine to be racist because 'everyone is'. So no, not everyone in America are like you or the guy who created that car in Forza. The majority are decent people. "but one act of racism to an African American is blown up." Again, because of your own racism, you are blind to the actual facts. If you READ the report, the car with white power and a swastika were given as ONE EXAMPLE of the racism seen in Forza. ONE EXAMPLE Spartan, in otherwords, this is not about THAT ONE CAR, it's about a larger problem than that. It is one of MANY cars, but somehow, I don't think there are 500+ anti-white racist cars to this one car on Forza. So whatever you THINK is happening in the world, it has nothing to do with gaming. And to those earlier who tried to justify this car as freedom of expression or even claim it isn't racist, go to the link provided by QJ to 360 gamer and then click on the link in the update at the end. So, you were saying?
by - 2007-07-05 02:04:55
Exactly Gamerfeed

The funny thing is, in situations like this, it is often not the people who are effected who complain so much, but those who (rightfully) object to such behaviour when they see it. Whether it's racism, sexism, homophobia etc, those effected are often not the people who complain the most, it's usually the people who feel ashamed and angry at the actions of their own people/group. For him to say black people should be grateful to white people for not being slaves anymore is not only offensive, but it has nothing to do with this topic and is purely based upon his assumption that those who complained about the racism in Forza 2 MUST be black. So you're right Gamerfeed, Spartan is nothing but an ignorant whinging racist fool.
by - 2007-07-23 22:50:37
OH the ignorance

To the person who stated that blacks should be thankful to the whites because they were freed, you should be ashamed of yourself. Let me clue you in a fact of History that you will never find in a high school History book: Although there were many good hearted whites is the North who truly opposed slavery because of its inhumane treatment toward our black brothers and sisters (by the way, I'm not black), the North, in general, wanted to get rid of slavery due to economic, and political reasons. The economic reason was that the North could not compete with the south since Southern markets did not have to pay any wages to the slaves, while the North did. Hence the South had an economic edge (advantage) over the North. The political reason was that each slave in the south was worth 1/3 of a vote for his/her master, while in the North, blacks were not slaves, but could not count as a vote, not even 1/3 of a vote, hence, Southern slave owners could gather more votes by combining 3rds from their slaves (i.e. a whole vote for every 3 slaves). Remeber that the collective vote was placed in favor of the slave owner, and not for the collective slaves themselves. In any regard, lets try to be more tollerant of eachother. If someone anoys you with how they behave and their manerisms, blame that particular person, not their entire race. If this is sounding to kumbayaish, then s c r e w it then, and lets just all kill each other. hahaha, J/K.
