Microsoft's Japanese Xbox woes discussed, dissected

Where is it headed? - Image 1With less than stellar numbers in Japan, the Xbox 360 isn't exactly the biggest seller over there. Gamasutra recently had a talk with John Ricciardi of localization company 8-4, Ltd, and Brian Ashcraft, Kotaku's Japanese correspondent, to help them figure out whether the Xbox 360 is really going anywhere in the region.

According to them, while Blue Dragon may have brought sales numbers into the five-digit range, it would take more than that to help Microsoft in the region. Ashcraft has mentioned that there are more Japan-centric titles such as The Idolm@sternow, which is helping the console to make up for the inability to take full advantage of its head-start. At the same time, the lack of support for Xbox Live's Japanese online presence has also failed to better the 360's position.

Perhaps Mr. Ricciardi best explained the problem as a matter of economics:

...There's no market to work with in Japan, so unless you can get major backing from Microsoft or another publisher with a strong presence overseas, there's no way to justify the risk involved to create a title that may wind up only selling to an audience of a couple hundred thousand.

We'd have to say, truer (and more sobering) words were never spoken.

Microsoft needs more single-player games.

Just about all of the Xbox360 games have been mostly tailored for Xbox Live, because if you don't have it, the value of the game drops dramatically.

They also need more party games.

Most Japanese people play games with other people. This is why the Wii is doing so well, is that it brings people together. This isn't the goal of the Xbox360, its goal is to push the online community. Just about every single Xbox360 owner cant say that they regularly play side by side with their friends. But they can easily say they play with their friends online.

For one the PS2 did much better then all the other consoles because it had a better single player experience. Also the PS2 had plenty of Multi-player games on it as well, most of em were 2 player though.

The gamecube was by far the best party console. SSB was pretty much the game to play with a large amount of people.

What did the Xbox have? The same thing the Xbox360 has, a decent online system. There isn't one exclusive to the Xbox360 that offers a worthwhile single player experience ,blue dragon included. I played just about all of em because I dont use Xbox Live much. Fact being, without Xbox Live, the Xbox360 is pretty much worthless.

I think it's just because the first XBOX did so badly there, it will take a long time for Japan to warm up to it. If there would be some great Japanese style RPGs released soon that would definately help while they're debating wether to buy a PS3 with its sh*tty game linup.

» Xbox rocks

Xbox rocks if there is not enough single player games that are long enough there will be this year, if anybody thinks they have seen amazing games from xbox they haven't seen anything yet, microsoft has not even begun you guys will see and of right now even though it is not fair to compare xbox to other systems it currently has the the most single player games and that's a fact so VIETONE don't talk until the end of the year when playstation 3 finally have some games and then we can compare games until then xbox is the best.
