Microsoft - Xbox 360 global sales surpass original Xbox - Image 1Microsoft called it. Worldwide sales of the Xbox 360 has now officially passed sales of the original Xbox.

I wonder if they accounted for all those gamers who had to buy their console more than once (i.e., RROD). At any rate, Microsoft's pretty happy about it, and they couldn't help but sling some mud Sony's way:

WeÂ’ve been blown away by the appetite of people to consumer digital entertainment experiences. [...] We're at a price point that is uniquely placed -- not least of which because we're in somewhat of a challenging economic time.

Ever since we dropped the price seven weeks ago, we’ve outstripped PS3 on a weekly run rate in all the territories we care about in EMEA – specifically the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Russia.

It may be an overstated achievement though. As 1UP so succinctly points out, we have to note that Microsoft practically abandoned the Xbox once they launched the Xbox 360, so who knows how far the Xbox could have gone otherwise. The PlayStation 2, on the other hand, is still going strong, sometimes even surpassing sales of the PlayStation 3.

» haha...

now beat the ps2 sales, what is that like 120 mil worldwide?

by Brant - 2008-11-24 08:38
» actually it's up to 140

and I don't think the Xbox 360 or the Playstation 3 combined will reach that in even 3 years.

as Xbox 360 just got to 24 million and Playstation 3 is at about 17.5 mil sold

» Congrats!!!

From the laughing stock of the gaming community to King of Console. Great Job M$. Keep it coming.

Side note: if your last gen system is kicking your next gen system's buttocks, there's a problem there. No wonder people would rather trade in all that PS2 stuff and get a $200 Xbox then a $400 PS3. Honestly, if you still only had a PS2, and the PS3 isn't backwards compatible, would you spend the cash to get less exclusives and similar graphics? No. Unless you are a Sony fan. Regular customers that far out number brand fans are the target and Wii has them. Microsoft is gaining them.

» RROD

I wonder how 360's were sold as replacements for RROD'd 360's. Let's just hope there aren't as many RROD in the future.

» honestly,

If i was getting my first game system and I was short on money, I would get the PS2 for its cheaper games, bigger library of games, cheaper system, more reliable system, ability to play backups without a threat and without opening the system, and mainly for the vast variety of games. Not to mention that a $199 360 would require a $50 hard drive at the cheapest.
