Microsoft UK boss Thompson on Xbox 360 Elite: It's all about choice

Neil Thompson defends Microsoft's move on Elite - Image 1You've all read about David Karraker's rather crackling statements on Microsoft's Xbox 360 Elite. The Sony official said a lot of things, and even taunted MS by saying that they treat every single PS3 consumer as an "elite." Microsoft Xbox UK top official Neil Thompson gave an interview today and defended their company's move.

Thompson reiterated that what they are currently doing is offering their user base options. The Core version of the console is the most basic while the newly announced Elite has advanced features including a 120GB space and HDMI capabilities. The official said that in this way, people can decide if they just need the basics or if they want something more. Then he continued,

We could do two things. One, we could offer consumer choice, so they could come in whenever they wanted to, and decide to add onto it. But also, that gives us some flexibility, in that we can make offerings that we can change and move within the context of the Core system. So over the next two or three years I think, yes, we're in an evolutionary stage.

But more than the hardware itself, Neil Thompson reminded Xbox 360 users to put more emphasis on the software and services they are offering. He said that through these things, the console is in fact evolving without the need to change its hardware specifications. He explained,

The definition of the 360 is about the fact that we can make the machine you bought today different in a year's time through the software and the services that we can deliver, and change what that machine can do and enhance it and make it better.

Lastly, Thompson assured fans that the Core version will continue to become available and that it is, in fact, doing better than ever.

» Wrong.

If Microsoft was all about choice, then this system would have been released at launch, not over a year later.

Where the choice for all the people who would have been interested in buying the elite on launch day then the premium? So what choice is there?

It would have been a choice if HDMI was an addon, if the color of the Xbox360 was interchangeable , or if you could have purchased a 120Gb drive from launch day.

This whole Choice thing about the Elite model is a bunch of BS. those who have a premium and want the elite dont have a choice but to trade it in, thats not a choice, thats an upgrade, but they dont want to call it that.

» What Choice?

If they were about choice, we would have the options of HD-DVD AND Bluray external drives available. Then the users would choose what they want. Right now we have the choice of HD-DVD or NOT.

What kind of choice is that?

because dumbs-h-i-t, Microsoft is backing HD-DVD. That's like saying why doesn't Microsoft give us MAc OS on our computers. They are against Blu-ray.

Then what do you call trading in a DS for a DS Lite, or a GBA for a GBA SP, or a PS2 for a PS2 Slim? Upgrades happen all the time! Get over it and stop complaining. I'm trading in my premium for an Elite and I have no problem with it.

» ....

and there all 4 your money, and every single person is buying into there method of madness, like the guy above who's "trading his in" for an elite.....more money than sense

» wtf did i say

imagine that, they are saying this is all about choice.. LOL.. What a bunch of ass holes. Didn't I say they would do this, yesterday??? But do they release one with a built in HD DVD drive? Nope. And they never will. They already gave up on that idea... Microsoft sucks ass.

I have to agree Orange, Don't say its about choice if your not going to give one.

» ms blows

tbh they say there machine is better than ps3 and then go ahead and upgrade it and its funny as the price of it near matched the ps3. HD-DVD is almost dead sales are dropping faster than UMD sales and blu-ray outselling them 10-1. So the HD-DVD is useless and not needed. I hate the fact i bought a machine for full whack now they relesaing another one? you seen the price of the HDD alone??? I could buy 10 120 gig PC drives for the same price!! There on pills i tell ya big fat pills.

» Shenanigans

MS and choice? Right! Is that like I have the choice to insert any hard drive I want, not just their proprietary drive for $200?

There's no choice here! This is the same system with NO upgrades, just a color change. And if you don't have a 1080p HDTV, then the HDMI is useless anyway. Besides what games are 1080p on the 360? Yep, Virtua Tennis 3! There's your true HD gaming on your 360!

Only suckers are gonna fall for this!

» Ordering the ELITE ASAP

First poster and its a Flopping PS3 owner thats always a sign that MS have another good thing on their hands.

Im getting the Elite but Im also keeping my premium 360 to hook up with the Elite with a Cat6 flat cable for some Full screen fun with m8s.

» This is the nail in the coffin for the PS3

HA HA this is just so funny, just about all the posts here are from PS3 film buffs, the ELITE is the nail in the coffin for the failing PS3 and you know it, typing negative things about it will not change the minds of anyone, just go play on the console you have and let people choose and buy what they want without throwing in your biased opinions.

» Elite on launch day along with Forza 2 and Mass effect, Lovely

DUHHHH so you have not seen the 360 Connectivity Kit that lets you use any sata drive then ?.

No upgrades? WTF is a 120gig hd then ?

I will tell you One thing its twice the size of the top end PS3 harddrive.

-If you don't have a 1080p HDTV, then the HDMI is useless anyway. Besides what games are 1080p - ?

Isnt that what you was all boasting that this was a good thing to have when it was only on PS3?.

Im getting the ELITE on launch day and I will be playing Forza 2 and Mass effect to round it off. Its just getting better to own a 360.....

» micrsoft rips you off

I cant belive how blind some of you are !!!!! im lucky enough to own both 360 and PS3 and there both great!!!!!but this elite thing has pissed me off i wanted true hd (hdmi) out of the box when i brought my 360 (and was very surprised at the time that it didnt) this "new console" seems to be just a complete waste of time and i cant belive the amount of people singing its praises it just microsoft admitting they should have HDMI to begin with and all this machine does is piss people (well me anyway) off who brought a premium system when they were launched why should i give microsoft another £300 odd to get the system they should have launched on release.........but anyway im off to play call of duty 3 on my inferior 360 as i cant afford the ELITE !!!!!

I rarely post here, and I'm in no way a fan boy of any gaming system. But it seems to be that microsoft is playing catch up with sony's PS3. This shows they are very aware of what the PS3 is capable of. Don't be surprised if they release a bluray external drive in the coming months. would only make sense if they wanna stay in the game.

by Xbox is the best - 2007-03-30 06:11
» fact

fact ps3 fans are not buying bluray movies I don't blame them I would not start building a collection for a format that may fail.

by skygunner27 - 2007-03-30 07:18
» I'm gonna be pissed!

I own a Hitachi Premium 360 and HD-DVD add on. If they release a Blu-ray player for the Elite, they better release a white one for the Premium that allows at least 1080i thru VGA/D sub 15 pin! That would be cool kinda to have a Premium 360 with a Blu-ray and HD-DVD drive. I wonder what Sony thinks of the idea of the 360 having both formats.
