Microsoft to try and take over Europe after failing to do so in Japan

Xbox 360 - Image 1Though some might say that trying to win the hearts of Japanese gamers might be a lost cause, Microsoft is now determined to focus its efforts towards the European market. "The No. 1 objective is to win on a global basis and that may mean winning some markets and losing others," said Microsoft's group product manager Aaron Greenberg.

According to analysts, cutting prices and releasing a few Japanese-flavored games (like Eternal Sonata) didn't do much to aid the Xbox 360's performance in Japan. "After two years on the market, Xbox's position in the country is such that it makes you wonder whether further efforts are even worth it," said analyst Hiroshi Kamide of KBC Securities Japan.

However, Microsoft 360's Japan's division is planning on launching more RPGs in Japan, so we should see if the strategy will work in the near future. For the record, the Xbox 360 is currently outsold by both the Sony PlayStation 3 (by three-to-one) and Nintendo Wii (eight-to-one) despite its one-year head start ahead of the other two consoles in Japan.

Will the Xbox fare better in Europe? Only time (and Master Chief, perhaps) will tell...

"The No. 1 objective is to win ?

Arrogant statement Aaron! on a global basis? I think the market place is big enough for several players. Win more market share would have been a better statement.

Um

Did you even read you fool. it states: "The No. 1 objective is to win on a global basis and that may mean winning some markets and losing others" Which means the number 1 objective for MS is to win alot of shares or sales around the world if they have any chance of winning this gen. Its the sole reason why there not doing great last or this gen.

..

It might go either way in Europe, in America Xbox360 rules, in Japan ( bar the Wii ) the PS3 rules, but here in Europe any which way is possible..

.

Microsoft needs to change their name and pretend to be a Japanese company to win in Japan maybe.

I did read

My comment remains valid, the user base for PS is huge and xbox did not really dent its user base. Most xbox users are new customers from the emerging market. I do not believe that MS can win the console war, I do believe that they can offer a better experience due to their online capabilities. This means more market share and I still believe the No 1 objective statement as it stands is arrogant. The biggest competitor to xbox is not the PS but actually the PC. Many people still regard the PC graphics and experience to be better than a games console.
