Microsoft to answer PS3 price cut with "Project Falcon"?

Project Falcon - Image 1Mercury News journalist Dean Takahashi has just reported on Microsoft's alleged new move to counter Sony's recent price cut for the PlayStation 3. The strategy will be under the codename "Falcon" and, according to Takahashi, will center around the latest internal electronics in the Xbox 360.

The said internal electronics will be composed of an IBM microprocessor and an AMD/ATI graphics chip that are manufactured in a 65-nanometer production process. We've already talked about this one before. Basically, these chips are similar to the 90-nanometer ones but are smaller and more efficient.

Takahashi added that this will ultimately solve the console's problems with overheating. Quite interestingly, the journalist also noted that Microsoft may opt to do a lot of things: put in the unsightly brick-style power supply inside, make a smaller version of the core or beef up the console even more.

Dean Takahashi spoke with one representative from Microsoft but the spokesperson declined to comment. However, when he asked Head of Games Division Peter Moore regarding Falcon, the following was the response he got:

We have a bunch of different projects that cost reduce and improve quality as you find issues, as does our competition. Once you get millions in the field, you learn about the box under all kinds of different circumstances, you can adjust and tweak what you do accordingly.

» That doesnt really counter anything

This is sad actually. They should have stuck with 65nm in the beginning. Plus this doesnt help people that already own a 360. I really wish MS new warranty was better than what they have. They will only fix certain types of problems. I think ill just send mine in anyways even though i dont have 3 rings of death.

» Sad

It's very sad that microsoft has to bring about soo many changes to the console when it's been out for quite a while now. It seems they were and still are playing "catch up" with sony. The first round brought about a faulty console, what will this round bring about? who knows.

» OUT IN STORES

» "The said"

How far of a stretch is it for Sony to offer a 60GB PS3 for the same exact price as the original 20GB PS3? BFD.

Also. Please, stop using the two words "the said" together. Read some books. Stop pretending you have editorial skills.

I can't believe their response is to redo the internals for the 360. What about the people who already have an overheating 360?

This is sad!

by Boricua - 2007-07-09 13:16
» hmm...

wow how many tries do they need to get it right? core, premium,el ite, falcon. whats next? xbox tiger, then lion, then maybe xbox 1080? all made by 2008. sony has ps3 20 gig, ps3 60 gig, ps3 80 gig. all sony does is upgrade the memory, while m$ just remakes the system trying to fix mistakes they made in the last system. but M$ just never seems to get it right.

They got it right the first time, hence why it has sold over 12mil units while the ps3 is in last place with its embarassing 2mil. The number will only grow as Halo 3 releases, the price gets dropped (E3 announcement), and PS3 fanboys realize they made a big mistake buying a console with only one good game.

Almost every console ever made that lasted longer than 2 years has had a major redesign. NES, SNES, Sega Master System, Atari Lynx, Genesis, Playstation, and the Plastation 2! How long have you been a gamer? 6 months?

The people that have an old XBOX 360 (like me) are enjoying it, and if it breaks it will be fixed free, moron.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-10 01:41
» laugh now...

So when is sony going to get on the ball and start using 65nm chips in the PS3? Isn't it suposed to be the latest technology? All they're doing is taking stuff out to reduce costs (like the emotion engine.) The PS3's hardware will only get worse as time goes on and sony cuts costs. It's evident if you've ever taken apart different versions of PS2s. The old PS2s have the best quality DVD drives and cast aluminum heatsinks, not extruded aluminum. The new slim PS2s don't even have a cooling fan or motorized disc tray.

Sony's console quality just go downhill as time goes on.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-07-10 01:50
» death blow

With so many great games and killer online, the only thing left for MS to work on is their hardware itself and customers' confidence in it. If this rumor is true, Microsoft will soon be unstoppable. Huh ha ha ha! Be very afraid sony fanboys!

Convert now, or fall forever.

My 360 has 5 rings. My Wii has a dildo attachment. My PS3 is a paperweight.

» AoxomamoxoA

you are a true fanboy. Xbox's 12 million is a shipped number and since they are not sold out anywhere (especially Japan), that is not a sold number. Look at the sales chart... ps3 is right where xbox360 was when it came out after 6 months (almost 4 mil?). What's impressive is this number is with a bigger price tag and more competition.

I love that you use the word fanboy in your comments.

by killalot - 2007-07-10 08:37

Why didn't you mention N64, gamecube, and Xbox. Ohh yeah cuz gamecube was redesigned to Wii and Xbox to 360. Still though how about the N64. I guess the only moron here is you.

by . - 2007-07-10 19:15
» @ Common Sense

What the F.U.C.K does the Cell processor have to do with the new 65nm chips in the new 360s? Last time I checked the PS3 does not overheat. The PS3 does not have a 33% failure rate. You do not have a right to complain about the PS3s price because god knows how long you have been paying for Xbox Live.

XBOX 360 came to the market prematuramente, so it didn't satisfice the goal of a next gen system. I think that it should be called XBOX 2, because it is waaaaaaaaaay smaller that the PS3. And if you are not down with that i'll go to your home and show you my 12 inches of pride.

by Xbox 360 unlimited - 2007-07-11 17:37
» WTF?

It seems like buying a 360 now will only be a waste cause im going to wait for Xbox 360 Unlimited. Yes the one that gives you unlimited upgrades and all you do is send it in to microsoft and they send you their newest hardware upgrade. Sweet but it's gonna cost $1,000 for the premium and $900 for the core. Nice one M$
