Microsoft takes actions against firmware modding

Xbox 360Way back in May, we reported on Microsoft's warning regarding Xbox 360 firmware modding. Now, it seems that things are getting way out of hand, as Microsoft's taking actions against persons suspected of firmware modding.

Unfortunately, it also seems that Microsoft is barking at the wrong tree, as there have been reports of people being banned from using Xbox Live, because they are "supposedly MODDED". Below is a snippet of Furydog' forum entry:

I have two xbox 360Â’s and since Friday October 13 2006 I have not been able to connect with my two 360Â’s. According to MS customer support my status codes indicate that I have MODDED 360Â’s which I donÂ’t. I have contacted several different people and I only one person (GreenJohnny) has responded to me but he was not able to assist me. Although, he did confirm that the status codes I received indicate that my systems Mac addresses are banned because their supposedly MODDED.

Now, this may be a case of a "Man in the Middle attack" (as pointed by our source), damage control, or simple paranoia. On the other hand, we can't blame Microsoft for taking such actions. They already issued a warning, after all.

The point is, Microsoft is done "playing dumb" to firmware modding, and they will get to the bottom of things, even if that means subjecting XBLA bans to users they deem suspicious. And hopefully, they will get to the bottom of things fast, to avoid hassle for everyone. In any case, better check your Xbox 360 if it was tweaked or something. After all, you don't want your Xbox Live account to be terminated, don't you?

This suxs for the whole modding scene

» This was a mistake

This was an error code that came up by mistake. Yes there is an error code in place for modded systems. But as of yet they havnt used it. And will only use it when games can be hacked and code launched.

Why?

Because at the moment it isnt a security risk. Sure I can burn copies and launch em. But I cant change the code, I cant run unsigned code and I certainly cant hack over xbox live. MS aint gonna take action until there is a modchip out there.

***** you think im gonna get banned becuase i got my firmware modded. What if i only go online with my RETAIL games and dont log on to Xbox Live with my backups?

dude go online with your backups. Its the same as going online with your retail. No matter what your firmware is modded wether you use retail or backups lol. And no no1 is being banned yet. So your fine for now.

Not more crap being brought up. As soon as they start banning you will know about it. As people on a mass scale will be banned.

This is just adding to the speculation flying around at the moment. 99% of em are bulls**t

yeah, but your hacked firmware goes into stealth mode when you run retail games, and doesnt when you run backups...

» stealth mode

When you startup your console with no dvd in and it signs into live or if the disk is still being registered when it signs into live. Then isnt your 360 drive not going to be in stealth mode until your game is in. Plus even the developers said they didnt no wether stealth mode would protect you.

That is why you use a mod chip like NME-360 which turns off when you play original games and cuts out xbox live when you play backups.

It's obvious firmware patches would be caught.

first off the NME mod chip and any other mod chip is just a bull***** method for ppl to make money, all it does is saves u like 20 min of opening ur 360 and flashing ur console back, and this incident sounds like a mistake because like someone else was saying it hasnt happended on a mass scale yet, and its not a threat to their precious xbox live, no cheating, system cannot be hacked, and they dont give a ***** bout loosing money believe it or not, they havent done anything so thats enough proof as it is.

So has this guy basically used games saves or something to cheat his score. Hence the ban

» Either that....

or has burnt out every damn game made, and has waaaay too much time on his hands....

The ability to play backup has nothing to do with the modding scene. There is no true modding scene on the 360 until its core security is broken. Allowing unsigned code like XBMC and such to run.

Actually modding is a hobby done my many people and has almost nothing to do with cheating (The true modders anyways) but it has to do with making the X360 or other systems do and run things there were not designed out of the box to do. Crazy_Q; who cares about gamer scores? Not any adult i know.
