Microsoft Smuggles Rockstar and GTA Franchise?

RockstarRumor has it Microsoft has its eyes set on Take-Two's Rockstar. The details and the events taking place at present are leading us to believe that this may be true to some extent.

Because of the "Hot Coffee" incident, T2 is under scrutiny by both the ESRB and the government. There's also the news that the company's being investigated by the Securities and Exchange Commission because of the stock option grants given to employees starting 1997.

ESRB also gave the company's game Oblivion an M rating instead of the T they were hoping for because of the player-created nude mod in the PC version of this game. You might also recall the fire that broke out and destroyed T2's New York Studio, causing them to lose important records, software and hardware.

These events almost pushed the game company to file for bankruptcy. Come to think of it, Rockstar had a big hand in T2's streak of bad luck. And it's no wonder T2 will be opting to sell Rockstar.

Events in Rockstar on the other hand, were also indicative of the game company's own bad (or good) luck. Massive firing of over half of its employees (including the co-founder) implies that Rockstar may be making room for some more people - preferably those that will come from another company that will be buying them out.

Yup, you heard that one right. Expecting a buyout of Rockstar is supported by the facts relayed. Also, take into consideration Peter Moore's announcement regarding the famous Rockstar game. Microsoft's Moore proudly announced that GTA IV will be exclusive to the Xbox 360, and that Rockstar were smart businessmen.

He must have been implying something with those statements, right? Sony had admitted to letting go of the GTA franchise even though it's one of the games that "made" Sony's consoles.

May I reiterate, these are mere speculation; neither Microsoft Corp. nor Rockstar has addressed this rumor. But it would really be interesting to know what exactly will happen to the controversial game company Rockstar...if only to be ensured that the GTA franchise has a future.

Exclusive DLC content for the 360, not that GTA IV is an exclusive to the 360.

If M$ indeed will buy Rockstar, I doubt there will ever be a PS3 version of GTA4... But this would still be better than Rockstar filing bankruptcy -> no more good Rockstar games at all... :(

I doubt that there will be no PS3 version if Microsoft buy Rockstar Games. It will mean more money for Microsoft and Rockstar if they do carry on with the multiformat release, if Microsoft buy Rockstar.

I guess I Although he did have a large GTA tattoo.. Tattoo's are symbolic of exclusivity. Its like if I tattoo Martha on my arm and show my mom "hey look mom my arm says Martha"... my mom is like, ok this ***** is serious. Then in a few months I tell my mom I am marying this *****, no surprises there right.

If MS buys rockstar they are just that much closer to gaining the most market share. Notice how I didnt use the fanboyism by saying something like "MS will rock Sony's Ass when they buy Rockstar". Also, fanboys note that the company with the most market share is not the "best"

If Microsoft buy Rockstar the GTA franchise will be ruined IMHO.

I doubt Microsoft would buy Rockstar anyway because its probably too controversial for them.

# Wow, check your facts before you post news articles...Guest 2006-07-12 22:16
I enjoy this site a lot, but I gotta jump in and let you know that the article has at least one fact completely wrong. During the E3 2006 press conference, Peter Moore stated that he was proud to announce that GTAIV would be available on Xbox360 the day it is released. He then went on to state that Microsoft and Rockstar had entered into an exclusive agreement to bring episodic content to GTAIV.

So, GTAIV is NOT an Xbox360 exclusive, but the episodic content IS.

Anyway, in some ways it would be nice to see Microsoft buy Rockstar, but in many other ways, I think it would just be bad for gamers in general. I like having multiple consoles and being able to choose which console I buy a game for is nice. Being forced to buy the game only on one console sucks (Resident Evil series, MGS series, etc.). Also, a monopoly is never a good thing.

# Moore's statements about GTA 4Guest 2006-07-12 22:53
Indeed during the press meeting, when Moore showed the infamous tattoo, he was speaking only of the fact 360 would be getting it as well as PS3, plus the episodic content.

However, the very next day on G4TV in an interview with Kevin Pereira, he stated that he had just signed a deal of exclusivity that made GTA4, and I quote "only on XBOX 360". THAT is the statement in question.

If Microsoft bought Rockstar, I guarantee no PS3 versions of GTA (assuming Rockstar owns GTA and not Take-Two).

Your logic could also be applied to games like Halo (MS), Zelda (Nintendo), and Gran Turismo (Sony). But you don't see or expect to see them going multi-platform anytime soon.

# Rockstar falling apartTheProfessor 2006-07-13 04:40
Is it me or is this a sign of Rockstar falling apart. Looks like the GTA franchise will go the way of Tomb Raider.

Take Two owns the GTA name no?

Also the comment Moore said about GTA episodic content at E3 was a lie. Rockstar confirmed with IGN that Moore indeed bended the truth. Moore lying, No surprise there

Sony didn't let go of the franchise, they just didn't think is was worth paying to keep them exclusive. By the way things are looking in the Take Two camp, it looks like sony knew exactly what they were doing.

Also GTA only helped the PS2 so I don't know what your talking about when you say "sony's consoles".

^WRONG! R* confirmed that GTA:4 was NOT exclusive to the 360. They did say the 360 would have exclusive DLC. And SONY had no choice, they could not afford to keep GTA:4 TIMED EXCLUSIVE!
