Microsoft Sends out Extended Warranty Letter - Pay More to Get More |

Ó
Yesterday I received a letter in the mail
detailing an extended warranty plan for my brother's Xbox 360, and immediately
threw it aside. However, I recalled the previous discussion of extended
warranties for Xbox's manufactured before January 1st, and read up more on
that. Apparently, those that purchased these Xbox 360's received a free extension to their warranty to 1 full year. My brother had purchased his Xbox 360 in the spring and it broke down a few months ago (Ring of Death - 3 red lights issue) and sent it back. This was, luckily, before Microsoft started charging for the shipping of the console, so I did not have to pay anything besides time.
Just now I received a letter detailing an extended warranty in which I could purchase up to a 3 year plan! I began wondering about why they sent me this, and recalled that I had sent in my brother's Xbox 360 under my name!

I'm assuming that Microsoft's distributing these letters to all of those who have sent their 360's in for repair, hoping to get some extra "dough" out of the deal from the consumer who already had faulty hardware. However, the price of the extended warranty is nothing to smile at, with 3 years toping off at just under 100$, I think I would save my money and take my chances. I've uploaded high-quality scans of the entire letter and form for those interested in their "scheme" - just click each image to go to the high-res image.

Consoles started breaking down when they got moving parts. Something that takes cartridges shouldn't break (NES did occasionally) but anything with moving parts will eventually need to be replaced if used enough.

Consoles started breaking down when they started using moving parts (cd drives, fans, cd trays, etc.)
All 3 of the new consoles are going to have problems with the drives over time. Gamecube and PS2Slim had the right idea with a spring-loaded lid rather than a tray. And PS3 / Wii - those type of CD loaders have always given me trouble.

It's like getting apartment insurance. You don't have to get it, but if disaster strikes, you'll be glad you have it.

That seems like a good value. $33 a year is a small amount of money to make sure that you will be gaming on your 360 for a long time to come.
I am not 100% behind this insurance.... I am not sure what it covers. But it sounds pretty good to me.
