In an official statement issued to GamesIndustry.biz, Microsoft said that the "vast majority" of Xbox 360 owners have had an "outstanding experience" with the console. The company does admit, however, that it has received "a few isolated reports of consoles not working," but that these issues were expected.Microsoft declined to reveal any details on how many Xbox 360 units had been found faulty, but assured gamers that "there is no systemic issue with Xbox 360 - each incident is unique and these customer inquiries are being handled on a case-by-case basis."
The company also added that customer satisfaction is their highest priority, and that it will do everything to take care of gamers who may be having problems with their consoles. Microsoft also urged those who are experiencing console issues to contact customer service for immediate help.

Your GPU took over a year before it runs hot ! how can MS know that you didnt accidentally cover the vents etc?. (though you were proberly just unlucky)
I dont think any other console manufacturer would be any different about it.
I had a microwave that scared the poop out of me when it blew, that was just over a year old to and they would not replace that either, thing is they have a business to run and people leave the steam inside with the door closed after cooking/boiling which causes rust, cover vents, put things in that shouldnt be put inside etc etc they just cant afford to say ok everytime one goes wrong out of warranty as a lot of the time its the consumers fault anyway.

PS3 well we will only know in time how many have faults it has as you cannot compare it with the 360 because there are a lot more 360s than PS3 out there and cannot be a fair comparison.

Just fix the problem Microsoft and stop just letting 360's drop like flies and fix them for less than 9 unless other reasons killed them.

Not by numbers.
Its the same with comparing Dell computers, sure thousands more Dells break down but then again, there are millions more Dell computers then any other brand.
The 360 is a flawed design, people have spoken about it and its very much a fact that the Xbox360 is not close to being as tolerant as the original when it comes to environment variables like temperature.
People who place their consoles on top of stereo receivers have experienced consistent red lights because of the heat generated by the stereo receiver itself. Where some people can place an Xbox and not worry about it, the Xbox360 is more strict.
Microsoft has their right to claim negligence on the consumer part. Since there is absolutely no quality standard for electronics, if they build it with less tolerance, consumers have to make adjustments.
People may not like it, but if your Xbox360 breaks, its your fault. Microsoft didn't have to extend the warranty to 1 year, but they did anyway. Thats why you get extended warranties.
Its like buying a TV with a 2 year warranty and expecting it to be defect free for 3 years.

So...I went back to the retailer (Game) armed with a few facts about the Sales of Goods Act, and they offered me a replacement or refund. I took the refund, bought a new 360 (so I'd have a 12 month warranty again...a replacement wouldn't have) and even got free game in the bundle!
