Red Ring of Death - Image 1Early this week, Game Informer published their report on the failure rates of consoles, and lo and behold, Microsoft's Xbox 360 was found nestled at the top of the charts, with a whopping 54% failure rate. Now, just as the news week is officially wounding down to a close, we get Microsoft's side of the story.

"Microsoft stands behind the Xbox 360 as a superior entertainment console with one of the best warranties in the industry," a MS rep told TG Daily.

We are constantly improving the design, manufacture and performance of the console through extensive testing of potential sources of any problems. Xbox 360 is pleased to maintain the title of 'most played console' and the vast majority of Xbox 360 customers have enjoyed a terrific gaming and entertainment experience since their first day, and continue to, day in and day out.

» FAIL

Lately it has seemed that Sony has spent money on improving a console that doesn't need so much improving anyway.. look at the PS3 Slim.

I guess they didn't fix it. My brother recently bought one and wouldn't ya know it.... Red Ring!

He said "We are constantly improving the design, manufacture and performance", if they're doing that...the failure rate should be less than last time where it was 33%...and he also said it has one of the best warranties...of course it does with that failure rate

» Look at them dodge

The issue. I've enjoyed my 360's (both of them) since day one but that doesn't mean I didn't run into issues. The first system red ringed twice. The second had that E76 error or whatever the general failure number is (it was a faulty hard drive that I have to replace myself, sigh). They have the best warranty service of any console because they have to, if they didn't they'd have too many lawsuits and problems to continue doing business. The Xbox 360 as a piece of hardware is very unreliable. As a source of entertainment its great.

The PS3 on the other hand was only being held back by its price now Sony will be able to use "reliable hardware" as a selling point thanks to the Xbox fail rate, and contrary to idiot belief The cost of manufacturing a PS3 has dropped to the point where they can finally make money off the systems and not just (great) software.

The funny part is that they have spent more time fixing it than making it and there, you can see the product quality.

Definitely the highest failure rate in console history and yet, people continue to buy MS's poorly manufactured product. Those X360 elite's that have been put on sale only prove MS's dedication of not fixing the problem, even when they've already invested $1 billion dollars!

by JTShiro - 2009-08-23 05:58
» That is terrible

It sounds like its only a matter of time till all Xbox 360 consoles get a red ring, my friend just got one after owning it for 3 years and he had to pay for the repairs due to M$ making a poor system (not calling the games bad, but M$ f****d up in the hardware department).

This survey must have been conducted by retards. Why cant they just buy a new xbox 360 test its failure rate. Im sure the people they surveyed bought their xbox's a long time ago. The new 360s probably have a failure rate 1 to 5%. The new jasper units dont really RROD

LOL "most played console"!!?? Maybe most purchased, but certainly not most played. If someone is going to spend the extra money a PS3 cost, then there probably gonna be playing it far more, plus, how often can you actually play a 360 anyway? It'll get the RRoD if you play too much!

How do you know? have you conducted a fanboy survey. I kinda feel sorry for fanboys like you (May it be ps3 or 360) you are too ignorant cuz of your negative IQ. only a fool doesnt know that the RROD is done with unless you have an old console. Just buy a 360 which was made in 2009 and it wont RROD. i dont get why people cant like either of the systems with both having awsome games

by phiyuku - 2009-08-23 15:17
» Yes we all know they dont really RRoD

but they do E74 errors. It has been shown recently theres a decrease of RRoD and an increase in E74 errors. The test did hardware failures E74 counts still. The fix for an E74 error is the same for an RRoD. X-Clamps and Reflow. We all know that E74 error is RRoD in sheep's clothing.

» Forgive me for sounding like a fanboy....

i'm gonna say it, PS3 has a very low fail rate compared to the Xbox 360 which has more then half of it's consoles fail. i'm going to say this as well, i am hoping that "made in U.S.A." like the Xbox 360 still means something in 2009. i am hoping that one day MS will redesign their product, hell i'm wanting a zune, that don't fail very often. i personally like the ps3 more than the xbox, but i know the ps3 don't have much games out for it whilst the 360 has over a TON of games that are very fun to play. sony has a lot of work to do if it wants to be competive, especially home!

by NuBiXx - 2009-08-23 17:19
» Fixing??

you are a comedian aren't you? Microsoft has not fixed the problem sending people another Xbox with the same problems as before is not fixing it.

I have gone threw three Xbox's over the past two years I know it is just a matter of time until I get rrod again. My ps3 I still have since launch and it works just like it did when I first bought it.

by pawn535 - 2009-08-23 19:28
» Thoughts from a PS3 owner

@Digitus

I believe I read somewhere that Sony is actually making about $60 or so off each PS3 sold which is a dramatic increase over the $150 I think they were losing when it first came out. I agree that the PS3 has been held back by the high prices but hopefully with the new PS3 slim (despite how ugly it may look [personal opinion]) that will change.

@Dorkus-1983

the PS3's that fail are (to the extent of my knowledge) either due to the blu-ray drive failing or something going wrong during a firmware update. Sony has pretty much fixed the issues with things going wrong during a firmware update by implementing the recovery menu. Gamewise the PS3 has been improving with more titles coming out that are actually worth purchasing. I'm happy that some decent looking RPG's are finally making their way over. MAG also looks fun, hopefully it lives up to it's expectations and promise of 256 player online (without lag).

by Teivin - 2009-08-24 02:18
» Hmm

I've had a 360 elite since launch. It's still happily chugging along. I honestly think people are just incompetent and cant clean and take care of their hardware very well. A lot of times I see returned 'broken' 360s I see them covered in dust (That nasty brown humidity damp dust ***** that congeals to plastic.) and cobwebs.

While I understand a lot of people do take proper care of their devices, a whole lot more are retarded and incapable of doing as such.

In response to MS not working on their console... well, its obvious that they work on the inside of the console. I know, its a shocking thought, but you dont have to make a 'slim' or 'one' variation of a console every time you redesign the motherboard, replace parts, or do other such things. Anyone who thinks otherwise has apparently never bought any product but Sonys.

In the end, the survey is obviously skewed. All surveys and statistics are. there really is no official way Microsoft could have responded to this that'd make anyone happy, anyway, so they may as well go to the 'cut and paste PR block' method. It'll get the same responses as an actual well thought out reply but without them having to waste their time.

tl;dr 84% of statistics are complete bull***** and 99% of fanboys in either camp worry too much about a console they don't own or care about.

» jasper does RROD

I know a manager at a game crazy that sold a 360 with jasper and had it returned the same day. Tested it out and it was RROD. BTW I was there when that happened. In fact after that, he started noteing which 360's where coming in with RRODs and a great number of them where jasper units(about 3 a week on avrge) jasper units RROD about the same number of times as the old units. So survey is about right.

by ZanLong - 2009-08-24 03:29
» 360 survey

I would agree with you on this, but I have seen to many 360s come in to the game crazy I go to that had RRODs. some of them I know, and take great care of there sysmtes. I had a 360, had it for about a year. and I take great care of my systmes. Well ventilated, dust them off every week. and got 2 RRODs. Have had a PS3 for about a year and not one probmle with it. So the survey seems to be about right.

I hope after the price drop happens they announce a new slim xbox

by KingPepper - 2009-08-24 07:58
» Now that is not a good idea..........

Think about it, what is the problem with the normal XBOX360's Mmm, yes overheating, so you make something that overheats smaller, so the heat build up, will increase also, resulting in even more RROD's???

So no not a good idea, hence why Microsoft are not making another 360 edition, only redesigning the same type with better cooling, hopefully. crosses his fingers.

by squeeky_clean - 2009-08-24 08:58
» You got to be kinding.

The only reason MS spent money to repair the system is because of competition. If it wasn't for Sony and Nintendo in the market, MS would have adhered to the original warranty and screwed everybody over. You have your head to far up your a## if you think otherwise.

by nate443556 - 2009-08-24 09:27
» agreed

Microsoft likes to avoid any answers and try to get money any underhanded way they can. None of these big companies really care If they screw us over. They're companies, and a quick buck is literally what they were created for.

» HAHAHAHA

Felis, you *****ing D-bag.

I have a 360 and a PS3. I play the 360 More, not because it has better games, but because it has much more online support. I rarely hear people talk in Warhawk.

But in gears or Call of duty, I hear them talk all the time.

I mean, the PS3 definitely, IMO has better First Party games. Its just that live is so much more of a community than PSN.

by FelisCatusLover - 2009-08-24 12:43
» ...

You know I'm so sick of hearing that damn LIVE crap being "better" it aint better, its a pile of crap. Crap, Crap, the stuff that comes out your ass, why do you like crap? When I go into PlayStation® Home® I get tons of audio. So stop complaining because the 360 comes with a 5 cent headset (literally, thats about how much it cost them to make) cause the PS3 is FREE ONLINE, meaning we could get a $50 Bluetooth headset if we wanted while you guys blow that $50 on LIVE.

by f31j - 2009-08-24 13:26
» ....

this sounds like dell. dell has 1 of the best customer service for pc. well of course they do, their pc/laptop breaks all the time. same thing for microsoft, if your system has such a major problem, you bet microsoft will spend the money to make up for it. it's nothing they should be bragging about. if you can't provide customers with solid system, it is your job to provide us with a working system.

that aside, of the 3 times I got RROD, i had no problem getting replacement. customer service people were very nice and understanding.

by whaleshark - 2009-08-24 13:47
» Yea,

I blow 50 dollars on Xbox live. You know, I would actually pay 60-70 dollars for it. You know why?

Because I can actually get to see all my friends who actually couldn't afford a PS3 in the start up. I bought one, because It was in my price range.

I have yet to see that this purchase is unjustified. Its a great console. However, I still think that live has better support. As any member, gold or silver, can say, I can voice chat with anyone else, regardless of what game they are playing.

Plus, I don't have to enter a game, to gather friends, to create a party. All I have to do is press a button.

You really don't get it do you. You pay for what you get. when I payed that 600 dollars for My PS3, I got awesome first party support.

when I payed 350 dollars for my Elite on black friday, I got a game console. I then payed 50 dollars a year for a great online community.

Sounds like a good deal to me, on both sides. So, ***** off.

PSN isn't as streamlined as Live, but 360's first party lineup is utterly crushed by the PS3's.

So stop being a fanboy, and actually look around the fence some more. Turns out, grass is always the same shade of green on both sides.

It just takes an idiot to think that his side is greener.

by whaleshark - 2009-08-24 13:55
» And

And yea, the headset is free. And you know what.

It works.

You know what else?

The 50 dollar Bluetooth headset you just bought.

works too.

They both transmit and receive audio.

So, you payed 50 dollars for a product, that, sure its wireless, but it still does the exact same thing as my cheap ass 10 cent headset.

Also, my 360 came with an HDMI cable.

My PS3 did not. I had to buy one. But I didn't buy a "PS3 Certified Monster HDMI Cable". No,

I bought the 10 dollar one. And you know what? I see no difference in my friends 50 Dollar HDMI cable.

So yea, I have a 10 cent headset. And you know what?

It pretty much does the same thing as your 50 dollar headset, except yours is sans-wire. But why do you need a wireless headset?

The controller is always going to be right next to you, the same spot as it would be with a wire.

I guess you can walk around with it. But I just walk around with my controller.

by phiyuku - 2009-08-24 15:25
» I don't knwo what world you live

in but Dell has horrible customer service. I tend to stick to e-mails or their live chat if anything. When you call you get someone you can barely understand. And I personally never had a Dell break on me but had every single one of my HPs fail atleast once. I have 3 HPs btw. Slimline edition Video Card and TV Tuner failed. HP Pavilion regular sized Motherboard failed. tx1000 or w/e its called. That tablet looking PC but BestBuy didn't sell it with the tablet screen motherboard failed apparenlty. Wifi card would never be detected even after replacing it read up on it and turns out to be a motherboard fail. And everything failed after warranty which makes me QQ. Had to buy a cheap replacement Video Card for slimline. Had to buy a replacement Motherboard from HP. Had to buy a cheap WiFi USB Dongle for laptop. So they have crappy cusotmer service in my opinion since I had to end up paying out of my pocket. -.- Microsoft on the other hand even though it did break and I ended up opening it before they fixed it and gave me 1 month Live. Still hate them for making such a unreliable console but atleast they helped solve the problem unlike HP.

by shanedp - 2009-08-25 10:00
» @NuBiXx

And yet you still play on the 360 even tho it craps out on you..now that's saying something right there!

PS3's may last forever but if you have a 360 and a PS3 then you should know why. A system that never gets used can't crap out.

hopefully, They did say they are not gonna bring any console for some time. And if they do it and there 0% persent chance of getting RROD it will truly be the best console. Cuz many of the people who I know want to buy an xbox but dont want cuz of rrod
