Microsoft researching new controllers for Xbox 360? |

When people talk about console controllers, everyone automatically thinks directional pad. Sure, we've got a few platforms which went against the grain and succeeded such as the Nintendo Wii but it's still common for us to associate the D-pad as the standard method of input for console gaming. However, Microsoft may have something to say about that.According to TeamXbox.com, Microsoft has been researching new methods of alternate input technology for their systems over the past two years. Among these include vision-based recognition such as that used in Xbox Live Vision and motion sensing technologies similar to the SIXAXIS or the Wiimote.
Interestingly enough, the website announced that Microsoft will be announcing news about this soon. If this holds true, then we might soon have a new controller for the Xbox 360. We'll just have to wait and see.

Here's a review from 1998!

So please cut the X copied Y crap, because motion control is nothing new, and therefore XBox fanboys should be the ones here saying Sony copied/stole ideas from others, despite the fact that technology is ever evolving, and so it HAS to 'copy' to move forward. It can't be avoided!

Also MS may have had a PC controller but ultimately Immersion made the technology and they decide who uses it. Im still thinking Nintendo used Immersion tech and never asked permission for it. Just watch, don't be surprised in a year if they get sued.
Besides PC controller+/+ Console controller. Now is he talking about PC controllers anyway.
MS needs to continue what they have been doing and no get motion control. Their console was the best in 07 over all. Thats right, better games and such, even Ninty Wii's can compete with that.
MS doesn't need motion controls and half the time it doesn't work well in games. Sony's games can vouch for that. Besides if thats new controller MS will be getting from the pic its going to horrible.

And MS were giving PC gamers exactly the same 'feel' for their games almost 10 years ago! The point I'm making about copying is that new technology usually evolves from the old, therefore it's almost impossible not to copy at some level. So it's pointless gamers saying MS copied Sony, or Sony copied MS, or Nintendo copied Gyration (who produced their motion sensing tech for the PC for years BEFORE they approached Nintendo in 2001 with an idea which became the control for the Wii).

A mouse and Keyboard for the PS3 is STILL a mouse and keyboard. It doesn't matter whether it's used on a PC or a console! Likewise, it doesn't matter if a controller is for a PC or console, the control mechanics is exactly the same. So for motion control, you have the normal collection of buttons and triggers, but instead of using the analog sticks for movement, you can tilt the controller instead.
I know, I was controlling PC games (mostly racing and flight games) several years ago in the same way we can do today on the PS3. That's why it's nothing new. It may be new to console gaming, but it is not new to gaming.
"MS doesn't need motion controls and half the time it doesn't work well in games."
Interesting statement. I used to talk about the issues and problems of motion control long before the PS3 was launched, and yet gamers were just not willing to listen AT ALL back then, because they thought it was the best thing since sliced bread (especially the fanboys). So it's good to see that gamers have finally accepted that whilst motion sensing can be fun, it does have it's limitations, and therefore is not a replacement for analog control (as some seemed to think until they tried it out for themselves).
"Besides if thats new controller MS will be getting from the pic its going to horrible."
Come on now, if the rumour is true, then you wouldn't expect to see any pictures as yet, so it's certainly not the pictures shown. :)
I don't agree that MS doesn't need motion control (not to say they need it). IMO, if they can implement it in a useful and fun way, then why not?
It could be packaged together with a game that uses it, much like the special controllers which comes with Scene It. Or, it may come in the form of an add-on for the current controller (for those who want it).
We'll see what happens.
