Microsoft replies to lawsuit: scratched discs affect less than 1%

Microsoft: Scratched 360 Discs Affect Less than 1% - Image 1In response to the lawsuit accusing Microsoft that they knew about the Xbox 360's disc-scratching problem before the console's release, the mega corp gave the following statement:

While we have had some users contact us with concerns about scratched discs, it is much less than 1 percent of the total Xbox 360 user base.

Xbox 360 is designed so that it will not damage a game disc as long as the console is not moved while the disc is spinning. Too much movement of any game console, not just Xbox 360, can cause scratches on a disc.

ThatÂ’s why we put a warning on the face of the disc tray, which the user has to physically remove before the initial use of the system. We also have warnings posted online and in hard copy instruction manuals.

Tough cookies for the 1% then. Tougher than the discs, apparently. Opinions are naturally split on this one. Some blame Microsoft for rushing the Xbox 360's release, and some point fingers at gamers for not being more careful with their consoles.

So how about we all just agree on one thing? If you buy an Xbox 360, you're buying a console that relies on way-faster-than-average disc rotation for faster load times, so you just have to be extra careful with it. Keep it on a flat stable surface, kick the cat out of the house when playing, and monitor the news for any earthquake warnings. That should do it, yeah.

» I agree

I have never had a disc scratched by my 360 (bought or otherwise =X), but I don't doubt that people have had their discs scratched be it their fault or not. I believe that gaming companies should input a registration-type thing where when you purchase a game, you fill out a form and they will replace your game if you mail the scratched one back. Kind of like Microsoft's program I guess, but the gaming companies should do that regardless.

» I disagree

This has been a issue since the system launched. I do believe that some people did cause the scratches them selves by moving their system while the disc spins. But you would think that since this system cost so much. They could have afforded to put buffers in that would give some resistance and keep the dvd-rom and disc safe from this situation. M$ choose the cheapo route and this is the result. I had this issue with my first 2 systems. I never moved my system. It was caused because of the speaker vibration of my 60". It's no way to justify poor quality and that's pretty much what this system is.

» Pfffff.... that's PR BS

Really, Microsoft... That's effin low.

I've never had any of my disk scratched by my xb360 but I've had many encounters with people who did, (I work in a video game store) neither would I care as we have an industrial disk polishing machine that can repair even the fattest scratches...

anyway this is really cheap of them, 1%? yeah right.

BTW I can flip my ps3 upside down while it's loading and it causes no problem whatsoever, thing is, MS did their console cheap, and they are getting away with it. They should compensate for broken disks.

» 1%

Just 1%...??? Its probably more than that, maybe others did not report it to them...

Anyway, I never move my console while it's on, and most of the time I remove the disc before I turn it off.

But still, my disc got a few scratches, but not deep enough to affect my game... but hey, I'm a new owner.

» It happened to me

only once, and before you reply to me saying it was my fault it wasn't.

the scratching only happened to one game, and that game was the elder scrolls: oblivion.

it scratched so bad. i had to get a new one and guess what happened to that one. you got it the same thing.

but i found i nice little disc cleaner and cleaned the disc, and then presto change so. it worked. it hadn't scratched any other game since. so it happens

» yayy im a statistic

My 360 shreded Cod2 in half while i was playing it! cool im in that 1 % that microsoft invented (its probably like 30% tho) apperantly if the console is sanding up it is easier to scratch discs (that totaly sounds next gen). anyway thats what they told me. Than i got rrod and i was puting a towel on it lol(totaly next gen...). where is that statistic

by Mister Common Sense - 2008-12-18 10:08
» the original common sense, with no period at the end

I've never had a disc scratched by my console, hell, my CD case scratches the discs slightly. The drive did go out after 2 years, but no RROD or other problems. Only cost me

besides, didn't Microsoft already get sued over this? Can anybody come along and re-sue Microsoft again and again? Microsoft also offered free disc replacement, but still not good enough?

Nintendo also got re-sued for wrist straps.

These lawyers can go to hell.

That's a *****ing lie. There a are hundreds of reports where the X360 was NOT moved while reading the discs. Most of the time this happens when you stand your console on the flat side, so it's standing vertical. my tip would be just to lay it down, so it's horizontal.

"kick the cat out of the house when playing" hey, that was mean...

by Viphid - 2008-12-18 13:53
» It happens...

Pigs do fly, if launched from a pig cannon. Not for very long, though. Your XBOX 360 will scratch your game while turned on, if knocked over, moved, tilted, brushed up against, molested by small children, in other words bothered while still doing it's job. Leave the system do it's work or don't own one. Seriously, did you ever take the cartridge out of an NES while it's still playing? That was my first lesson on taking care of my video game systems.

1% of 22 million(or whatever its at now) sold 360's is 220,000 xbox's that will kill discs....that's a pretty large number, even if the percentage seems low...

"Too much movement of any game console

, not just Xbox 360, can cause scratches on a disc."

My PS2 fell over with a disc inside from a 4 foot table. Disc and system is fine. PS, PS1, disc was held in place. GC, disc was held in place, Xbox 1, Discs never scratched. DC, disc held in place. Wii, No scratching. PS3, no scratching.

Microsoft, I think its just your console.

» Lol

I work at to work at a game store (Gamestop unfortunately) and there is a retarded amount of people who come in with the scratched in disc ring. I'm not able to say whether they lie about moving the console or not but it is nearly one person a day.

by smartdude - 2008-12-18 16:03
» I must be a statistical anomaly

The ring scratch-in has happend to 3 seperate games at 3 seperate times on my X-Box 360. It's a P.O.S. I have even called Microsoft to have them replace the system and the games. They replaced my Halo 3 game after complaining for an hour but refused to replace my call of duty 4, total BS. And now its has happened to my rock band 2 even after microsoft "fixed" it.

» Helloooo was anyone paying attention to my last post on this subject.....

Like I said before, my friends console was OFF when he moved it and it STILL SCRATCHED THE DISC!!! Now I'm pretty sure that's a big problem if you ask me. I can understand the disc being scratched when the console is running and someone moves it but come on, that is just ridiculous.

by hakk3r - 2008-12-18 17:30
» Ummm....

If you take a cartridge out of an NES while playing its not going to do anything really.... it'll just keep running through the preloaded scripts until you put it back in, then it will continue to load perfectly fine.

Wow your really that dumb?

by sycoblast - 2008-12-18 20:18
» here come the negative stars

lol look at that microsft logo picture maybe all those circles are representing the scratches its console does to the discs

by Isaac C. - 2008-12-19 02:06
» hehe

i give you a star for saying what i wanted to say in the article ;)

by projectionist - 2008-12-19 02:19
» ONLY RETARDS SCRATCH THEIR DISKS

if you use the system properly and follow directions, you won't ever scratch them. i've had the same console for over three years and NEVER scratched a disk.

by narutosaiyan - 2008-12-19 08:33
» umm not really

mine wasnt "knocked over, moved, tilted, brushed up against, or molested by small children" and it still messed up the disc to the point of no return. So umm if it hasn't happen to you dont judge people who it did happen to because that makes you look dumb. The fact is that some consoles that are standing veritcal (thats with the hard drive pointing to the ceiling for all the retards that don't know what vertical is) than it could scratch ur disc. Now I was there when it happend. I was playing cod2 and then the console blinked and suddenly it sounded like a lawn mower so i jumped up and turned it off. Than i had to use pliers to remove a disc shreded in half and stuck inside a 360. There is ur next gen console for ya... it so nex gen it cant stand vertical or it will scratch ur discs or overheat...
