Microsoft promises improved Xbox 360 headset this Fall

Ó

That Xbox headset of yours will soon have improved sound quality, promise. This was Microsoft's claim upon releasing more information on their updates for the Xbox 360 this coming Fall.

gamers_multiplayerThe company apparently plans to launche the new design of the Xbox 360 in time with the launch of Kinect. Included in the redesign will be an upgraded codec and audio infrastruction, which determines the quality of voice communcation from one console to another. Now there should be no reason for teammates to blame miscommunication with one another when failing a mission in one of your multiplayer games.

Explained XBL Studios head Jerry Johnson at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, "The codec we used when we first launched was a low bit rate codec and we stuck with that. We launched and we said we required broadband. We required a 64k connection, which not many people think of as broadband any longer. But that was the minimum requirement to run the service at the time.

It's time for us to move on. Especially if we want to think about broadening - a crackly headset on the top of your head – not what people think of when they talk about popular entertainment."

Hopefully they'll be able to deliver on this promise well enough. Multiplayer teams are counting on it.

new and improved products are always a plus. microsoft is definitely vamping up the x360. looks like they're really keen on keeping it around for as long as they could.

I have always wondered why Microsoft released a headphone with only one ear piece, hopefully this new improved one will have both ears covered, especially useful in FP shooters, don't you think. :-*

They should fix the newer mics, so that they'll last longer. I've had my 2007 mic for 3 years, and it's still fine, but when I got my 360 Elite it came with another mic so I used that. It's only been about 4 months, and it is already breaking. I treat my gaming accessories with care, yet it's dying that fast. They need to make them more durable. I don't want to pay for a mic every 4 months when I already pay for games and an XBL membership.

Does this mean the mics they are producing are going to be of better quality too? Mine is barely hanging on by a wire, and the volume locating is shite too.

Xbox 360 headsets are the worst. They all break around the same time. The wired mics last 1-2 months and the wireless mics last about a year. I think that Microsoft purposely makes them low quality and high priced so you keep buying new mics and putting money in their pocket. I mean, cmon! It is Microsoft! If they wanted to make a good accessory that lasted a long time they would
