Microsoft promises best Xbox 360 Christmas ever

Online site MCV UK recently had a chat with Microsoft Senior Regional Director for Northern Europe Neil Thompson regarding their company's marketing plans for this coming holiday season.

With the release of Halo 3 and other high-profile titles coming up, the Xbox 360 is in a good position to run away with the lion's share of the market this Christmas. Thompson shared that Microsoft will be spending tens of millions of dollars in marketing alone just to entice costumers to pick its console and software products over the competition. The official said:

It's the most expensive time of year to spend money. It is pivotal, we have heavyweight activity and you will see Xbox 360 very clearly above the line. We're working very hard with retailers to ensure we do a great job in-store and out of store. It will be a big 360 Christmas out there this year.

Neil Thompson then shared that despite having an early lead over Sony and Nintendo, Microsoft can't be too confident and that they have to keep on finding ways to widen their consumer base. Aside from keeping the core gamers happy, the senior director said as well that they have to create content for the mass audience.

"We definitely want to work with people beyond the gaming arena. There's definitely a space between gaming and movies that there is a lot of energy around. It's just finding the balance between bringing the joys of gaming and the emotion and connections from the audience you get with a film," commented Thompson.

In other words even Microsoft admits that Sonys decision to implement blu-ray was not only correct but 'it bringings the joys of gaming and the emotion and connections from the audience you get with a film'

I hear sony saying 'Well done MS you've outdone yourself once again cheers!!!' (once again= remember when MS stated that HDMI was not next gen and not required? Enter Xbox 360 ELITE wtf?????).

WTF are you going on about? How is MS excluding HDMI any different than Sony leaving out rumble or removing backward compatibility. HDMI wasn't a dominate standard when the 360 first launched. And it's not required to achieve 1080p graphics which hardly any games use.

Sony's decision to implement Blu-Ray was not for the joy of gaming. It was Sony desire of owning a media format and trying to use the PS3 as a trojan horse off the back of the success of the PS2. While they were at it they thought, hey lets use our media processor chip "Cell" in the PS3 as well. It'll be difficult for game designers to develop for but it'll reduce chip production costs so we can sell the chips for use in over entertainment devices like tvs and dvrs. Are you enjoying your constant delays? Does HDMI help you when the multiplatform releases have frame rate issues and missing textures not experienced in the 360 version?

The SCEE CEO came out and said the PS3 will sell 5 million units without any games prior to launch. 10 months out from launch and they have finally hit that. Losing countless former Sony exclusives to the 360. Letting the 360 dominate the US. Letting the Wii dominate Europe and Japan.

But if Sony had a choice of either a) win the media format war or b) win the console war, they would choose (a) in a heart beat. Yes HDMI is needed for Blu-Ray playback in 2012. Why don't you do Sony favor and buy some more Blu-Ray movies to justify their gamers come second logic.

Feel like selling your PS3? Of course not. Put the thing up on Ebay and you get $200 less then you actually paid for it.

Only mistake MS has made has been with it hard reliability. Sony is fortunately this was the case. Even so MS has done a good job with replacements and warranty and the fact that the PS3 has yet to outsell the 360 in a single month of sales while this has been going on just shows you how bad the PS3 is doing at the moment.

Does Neil even know what he's talking about? He says sales will be up the xmas, they sure will for the PS3. Neil doesn't have a clue what he's doing, I bet his kids play with a PS3....... Well neil i live in your neighborhood and i have seen a PS3 in your house....

Actually HDMI although extremely useful is not next gen its next tech. Component is actually a superior signal.

Yes MS has won a lot of favour with the developers but thats only natural as they want/need money. PS3 will have many games in the future and it will sell well as having Blu-Ray onboard is a definate hardware advantage.

With that said its really down to what is available today and what is the best value right now. Talk of 2012 is BS. In 5 years from now we have no idea of what technology might be available for the consumer. Reality dictates that 2012 we will have 3rd Generation gaming consoles so any argument in favour of todays console based upon Anal istic predictions for 4 to 5 years from now are a total waste of time.

Yes the Grammer is stating Best Christmas ever for xbox.

However I disagree with the fact that they are losing from PS3.

PS has in the past been the console of choice and the original xbox did not do much to shake up the market. However with the 360 Sony now have to share the market. Maybe PS will sell more in the long run but always a lot less than was possible if the xbox 360 was not eating some of this market share.

Maybe you guys don't understand but I'm hoping Neil Thompson meant that this will be the best Christmas for the Xbox 360 to date. They'll probably do something the next Christmas and the next and the next until their next gen console comes out. Me. I'm just waiting for an Elite with a 65 nm CPU and GPU with a price cut.

I think next year will be the year from Sony. With games like Gran Turismo 5, MGS 4, FF XIII, Killzone 2 and much more great games I'm sure christmas 2008 will be for Sony.

Just to note you mention Sony losing lots of exclusives which is true but the fact is how does anyone know they were "PS3 exclusives" or just exclusives from last gen, that everyone thinks will be exclusive next gen. The only (PS3)Exclusive they actually lost was GTA4 nothing more. They never stated to begin with that DMC4 was a PS3 exclusive, they never stated that the other exclusives they lost was PS3 exclusives.

Its sad that xbox fanbots like you or just any other NOOBS out there thinks they lost lots of PS3 exclusives which isn't the case. They lost last gen exclusives yes but not PS3 exclusives. And i hardly find that a reason to bash PS3 or say it stinks etc.

I rather have New franchise exclusives than falling back to last gen killer titles to sell the next gen systems, Like MS does to halo since we all know its their flagship title and if it wasn't for that game xbox would be dead.

New Gen new games to show off the power of the system, which is why PS3 will dominate its inevitable. And i will be getting 360 probably b4 Christmas but only to play 2 games. Halo 3 and NG2

360 would not be dead without halo.....360 sold 10+ million units before halo ever launched, and now with it's launch will sell even more. If halo didn't come out, people would just still play gears of war. Halo was not needed to make the 360 outsell PS3, it's just going to help alot more to beat sony into the ground.....

Even diehard Sony fanboys like yourself cannot resist it's appeal....and all the people that have been sitting on the fence on whether to get a PS3 or 360, will now get a 360 because all they hear about is their friends having a great time together online with H3....
