Microsoft on February NPD sales: there's more to a winning console than sales

We can expect quite a number of analysts and companies to start making a few statements regarding the February NPD U.S. results. Microsoft has decided to give its own take on the current situation of the different consoles following Sony's comments regarding the report.

A recent entry on the Gamerscore Blog regarding the February NPD update stated that a winning platform is not just defined by console sales but content and the community as well. Microsoft believes that the Xbox 360 has ample representation in all three categories.

With regards to the console sales, Microsoft pointed out that the Xbox 360 seems to be doing quite well overall. The post cited a few figures that were revealed in the recent NPD report to support their claims:

US$ 332 million was spent on the Xbox 360 platform this month, capturing 39 percent of the generationÂ’s ecosystem, US$ 235 million was spent on the Sony PlayStation 3 and US$ 283 million was spent on the Nintendo Wii. (February NPD data)
The Xbox 360 platform now has a U.S. installed base of 9.6 million; the PS3 has 3.8 million, the Wii has 8.1 million. (February NPD data)

With respect to content, the post cited that the Xbox 360 is leading in games with six out of the top ten best selling console titles in February belonging to it. In addition, it was mentioned that the Xbox 360 sold US$ 184 million in games, while the PS3 sold US$ 97 million and the Wii US$ 130 million.

Microsoft also took the time to mention the gaming community behind the Xbox 360. According to the post, the company's internal estimates show that "Xbox LIVE is the largest online gaming community currently over 10 million strong worldwide." In comparison, the number of PS3 online network users are said to be pegged at around 2.9 million based on U.S. data only while the Wii has four million (including North America and Japan).

Yeah, that is clear if the XBL service is *****ing expensive.

"255,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold during the month of February."

ummm, yeah nothing new. What do they want to tell us with that?

No, actually not. So Microsoft, what's your next excuse, gaming doesn't affect the console sales?

expensive at $5 a month? okay.

and yes, there is a lot more than just sales to winning the console war... otherwise wouldn't people have already called the Wii the winner?

I have an XBox360 and i hope to have a PS3 by the time FFXIII comes out... beyond that, what's with the fanboy comments? and still who cares about sales numbers, other than the fanboys? i mean as long as the consoles you have do well in general and don't go the way of the dodo, you should be fine.

Eventually a lot of ppl will end up getting all 3 of them. By that time the next gen of consoles will be introduced. The race never stopped. You wouldn't expecting by 2012 360, Wii and PS3 are still around as the leading edge consoles right? I'll be surprised we don't hear anything about the next gen of consoles by 2010 as a matter of fact... The race is always on. Just because you dorminate the market this year or next or the year after doesn't mean jack in a long run.

360 is doing well :) but, it's kinda misleading by Microsoft, they are suggesting it has done better than Sony. It hasn't as it said only 3.4 mill Ps3's in US so ofcourse, Sony will earn less. While there r three times more 360's in US, that means, Microsoft should be earning three times MORE than Sony on games, but earned nearly twice as much.

BUT Xbox Live is woahhh, doing great, but then again there are three times more 360's applied online cuz, there are 2.9 mill only US n there 10 mill 360's worldwide :P.

So PS3 is doing better than 360. It just need more consumers which it will hopefully get
