Microsoft officially announces Family Timer for the Xbox 360

Here's a little something for the parents, courtesy of Microsoft. The company is sending out a press wire that reveals more details for their upcoming Family Timer feature for the Xbox 360 console. For starters, Family Timer will give parents the option to set the feature on either a per-day, or per-week basis.

Family Timer will also give players a warning just before your time expires, and the console automatically shuts down - you'll want to wrap up your Halo 3 multiplayer session before that happens. Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Division president Robbie Bach has this to say regarding this upcoming feature:

As a leader in interactive entertainment, itÂ’s MicrosoftÂ’s responsibility to provide parents with tools they can use to manage their childrenÂ’s video gaming and online experiences, and we have made that a priority from the very start.

Microsoft further confirmed that Family Timer will be downloadable via Xbox Live by this early December. Check back when new information for this topic is announced.

So if you were up all night playing when your parents were asleep, would a timer that would be circumvented by simply turning it off and back on make you go to bed? I doubt it, which means it's all but useless, and good parenting is the only substitute. This, of course, assumes that the timer resets if the console is reset. If anyone has any other info, then let me know.

And yes, I'm saying if your parents let you play all night without doing anything about it, or even worse, weren't aware of it, then there was something wrong.

It says "Family Timer will give parents the option to set the feature on either a per-day, or per-week basis" so I think you can't get rid of it with a reboot, when you can set the timer on per-week basis. I bet you get a message on start-up that your timer's out.

Plus I think that it's a pretty good feature, I would have done much better in school when I was a kid if I had a timer like that. Heck, I would accomplish much more even now as an adult if my girlfriend would set that timer up. Now that I think of it, I should make sure that she doesn't find this out
