Microsoft debunks rumors of integrated HD DVD drive |
Ó
We've all heard about the rumors that Microsoft's Bill Gates will introduce what is currently dubbed as the Xbox 360 Ultimate, a beefed-up Xbox 360 supposed to be powered with built-in Wi-Fi, a hefty 320GB hard drive, and an integrated HD DVD drive, among other things. The speculation sounds interesting, but Microsoft just flat-out denies the rumors of any Xbox 360 SKU getting a built-in HD DVD drive.A Microsoft spokesman commented to GameSpot that they don't have any plans of integrating an HD-DVD player into the Xbox 360 ever since the console's launch, and that they certainly aren't changing their minds at this point. The spokesman continued:
We feel that offering the drive externally is the best way to give consumers the ultimate choice to create their own high-definition experiences.
Well, there you have it, but since it's a trend within the gaming industry to deny rumors until they get officially announced, we'll just have to wait and see if this particular rumor will just turn out to be true.

Does that mean all the other stuff(wifi, 65nm chipsets, quieter fan) may very well be included? Damn... maybe it's time to sell my Box.
Think the major announcement from the MS camp will be an XBOX w/ blu Ray....makes sence since all other game publishers are already putting their game on Blu ray disc...things that make you go hmmmm...
That would mean that Sony would make money on every console and game sold that uses blu ray technology. That wouldn't make competitive financial sense for Microsoft. It would be like Pepsi using their main rival Coca-Cola as a supplier. Microsoft probably wont come out with a new Xbox(720?) for a couple more years and by that time HD-dvd might be completely dead which would force them to go with blu ray. The only thing that could have saved HD-dvd was if Microsoft went all out and supported them by having one in each Xbox.
The closest we can get to that is an Xbox 360 with multiformat drive, but we can be sure about the furor it'll cause if that happens. Interesting thought, though. ;)
have already said if BR is the all out winner that they would consider making an external BR player....
Sony would get a licensing fee of course, but they wouldn't neccesarly be the ones supplying the hardware for MS....
This is probably the best course of action. MS however are not stupid and using the HD DVD an as external system sounds logical. The console as is still has a reasonable lifespan and by the time Blu Ray becomes the accepted format there will be an alternative solution on the market which would enable MS once again to be ahead in releasing the 3rd gen console. Data transfer speeds are increasing with more stability and when we consider that most console owners do have a high speed connection to the net secure games downloads are a definate possibilty. This would theoretically give gamers cheaper games as the distribution systems and production of games on hardware could be avoided. And before people shout about needing to download 20 gigs of game data consider that online games need only to download the basic engine and instructions as the rest is implemented on demand as the player progresses through the levels..
The whole XBL area is the future and is being improved continually and within 3 years could be more than adequate to eliminate the need for a physical disc drive. I do not see the need for HD DVD or Blu Ray as being the ultimate source for games in the future.
I can't help but think that people will want to have their games on a more physical medium than just sitting there on your HD.
You theory is sound, for some parts, But I wouldn't want to wait for my next dungeon to finish downloading when im playing an RPG.
Or getting a nice 'Please Wait... Download in Progress 45%' screen when finishing a level in a shooter and getting teleported to the next level.
I remeber and article that I read Of toshiba making and new DVD like blueray and may be that might be in the new Xbox 360 Ultimate

point taken about the hard drive but I was thinking more along the lines of load times being equal to present dvd speed read times.
Games for the most part when being played can handle background downloading without any real issues. A cutscene that is downloaded whilst playing would be the best choice as this can be viewed as the next map is loaded. I can understand the wishes for some to want a physical form of ownership, i.e. a disc but these days purchasing music, video and some games via download is becoming more common. MS has the ability to do as Apple do with Mac.com via its XBL. what is there to prevent a paying user to have 250 gig online as there personal and secure game library.
I truly believe that this will be the future: Select a demo and try, pay for the game and have it deposited in your games library.
Switch on log in and play solo or online. The console needs less hardware can be more efficient smaller maybe cost effective for gamers. I find it lame to pay 60 bucks for Beowulf but 60 Bucks for Mass Effect ot Bioshock I though were fine.
When games are distributed online and you get a demo or a 1 hour playtime then a consumer knows if they will like it. This would also ensure that quality rules as then the crap games will just cease to exist as no one would bother to purchase. All the hype over Beowulf and a release for the holiday season ensure money for nothing.
The Live Arcade, but with real games.
It'd be perfect.
Sure having games downloaded straight to your hard drive is nice and all, but I really like to be able to trade my games in to get new ones at the Game Crazy where I work. If we started to download everything then that would be completely blown out of the window...
Not that I have a problem downloading some games... I used Steam to download Half Life 2 about a year before I got Orange Box on my 360... and now it just sits there doing nothing.
