HD DVD on the Xbox 360 - Image 1Looks like we have a lot to look forward to in terms of stuff to watch. Over at Comic-Con 07, Microsoft has announced that they're cutting the price of the HD-DVD player from US$ 199 to US$ 179. Microsoft is also adding five free movies into the mix for those folks purchasing the Xbox HD-DVD drive, though it's a mail in offer where you can pick from a set of 15 titles.

In addition, its recent press release from Comic-Con also revealed that Xbox Live users will be able to enjoy "300" and "Heroes" on their console. To promote the upcoming release of "300" and "Heroes" in HD-DVD, Microsoft will be offering "300" on the Xbox Live Video Marketplace beginning August 14. "Heroes" fans will also be able to pick up a copy of the pilot episode of the show through Xbox Live Video Marketplace for free, though the date of that promotion has yet to be announced.

In any case, it looks to be an exciting time for folks hoping to get more high definition goodness out of their console. We're certainly impressed with the offer.

» LMAO!!!

A whopping $20 for a dying format!! Where do I get one? Too sad!

» damn

They can keep that HD dvd player. $20 bones is the best they can do for something that is going to be worthless in about 2 years? I'm glad heroes is going to be on XBL I may buy the season if its cheaper than getting the dvd.

They need to drop the HD-DVD player price more than that, I would say to $150. They never seemed to make the add on very appealing even to people that like HD-DVD movies. You can buy a stand alone player for only $300. They need to make the Wi-fi adaptor cheaper too, maybe $80 at most.

» how about

$50 for the wifi adapter and that's pushing it. It doesnt matter now, already paid the $100, but damn.

some people are really stupid. If they are giving away 5 free movies and you figure that each movie costs $25, then that would be $125 worth of movies. Now subtract $125 from $180 and the drive costs $55. There is a lot of dumb people on this planet.

Hi,

If they were to drop the price of the add-on to somewhere below 100 bucks (even 99.99), I might consider buying it, just to watch HD-DVD exclusive stuff. Somehow renting something over XBL or even Dish network PPV, or downloading onto a HDD never appealed to me. If I pay for something with an intent to buy it, I like to have something tangible, e.g. CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, etc.

To Beejbc: I already paid the $ 100 too, just a few days after I bought my 360 (360 in Mar 2006, Wi-Fi adaptor in Apr 2006). I do wish the price had been significantly lower though. Somewhere around $ 50 would be about right. Hell, even some Wireless routers are cheaper than that. My Wi-Fi router, which supports 4 simultaneous connections, cost just 50 after a $ 25 rebate :).

MTK

» Well...

Just have to hope that the 15 movies you pick from are good movies you want...otherwise it's really not worth it.

I'm doing fine without HD movies...or converting HD movies to .wmv and streaming them...it's all good.

I really wish movie marketplace would get on the ball in Canada so I could DL some of the free crap they have....of couse, my 20gb is full anyways....

» good question?

i check the XBL store and there's never any movies or TV shows in the Canadian store... whats up with that? Just the game demos!

by digitalfanboy - 2007-07-26 10:41
» price

both formats have expensive movies, why pay $40 per movie when i can buy them brand new for $15 on DVD?

okay even better,if you rent one movie per week of HD quality (720p) how long would it take to reach the cost of the hd dvd player? blu-ray player?

you could watch 3 or 4 movies for the cost of 1 hd dvd/blu-ray.

dvd was the new standard,it had nothing to compete with. it's hd dvd vs blu ray vs digital distrubution/ppv.

» Umm

You can buy a DVD for $15 and thats great but it looks worth nothing compared to HD DVD or Blu Ray(Only the later 50GB mpeg4 blu rays look good. the first batch of about 35 movies looked absolutly horriable for $40 a piece). Its about having the best and having the best also cost the most. HD DVD and Blu ray are nothing but niche formats for HD DVD enthuist at the moment and I kinda like it this way.

» because fool...

It's silly to invest even that amount of money in a format that's most likely going to lose. Plus, this should've been included with the elite, it's ridiculous it's still an add-on. Also, there's only 15 movies that you can select your freebies from, and with gems like a U2 concert on the list, how could you go wrong (sarcasm)?

I see you contribute to the dumb people on this planet quite readily.
