Microsoft confirms Xbox 360 price cut, Madden 08 follows on Aug. 14 |
Ó
The Microsoft Corporation confirmed today through a press release that it will be cutting retail prices on all members of its Xbox 360 family of consoles by US$ 50, which takes effect on August 8, 2007.This pushes down the suggested retail price of its Xbox 360 Core system to US$279.99, while the Premium and the Elite versions will be priced at US$ 349.99 and US$449.99 respectively.
For those who are in the market for the ultimate Halo 3 experience, a Halo 3 Special Edition version of the Xbox 360 will be available in September for US$ 399.99, which sports a Spartan green and gold finish and comes along with Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 20GB hard drive, Xbox 360 Headset, an Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit, and more.
"The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360," comments Mitch Koch, corporate vice president for Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group for Microsoft.
Also announced was the release of the anticipated football simulation Madden NFL '08 on August 14, giving Xbox 360 gamers two huge reasons to be happy this month. Madden is published by Electronic Arts' EA Sports division and is the only football game licensed by the NFL to use its teams and players.
Microsoft also reminds everyone that they'll have a stellar line-up of releases in the year's second half headlined by games such as Halo 3, Guitar Hero III: The Legends of Rock, Blue Dragon, Mass Effect, BioShock and more.

"The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360," comments Mitch Koch, corporate vice president for Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group for Microsoft.
ms didnt have any competition for a year so no need to lower the price but now that the ps3 and wii r on the market(and the wii is blowing the ***** outta both ps3 and 360) they need to lower the price. Plus the 360 is only in the lead for now. the wii will pass it soon.
um... hello 50 $ off the core would make it 249
not 279
No matter what the price, someone will always complain. The price will never hit the sweet spot because if it was $299 for the premium they would claim the sweet spot is $199. If it's $199, then the "real" sweet spot would be $99.
Truth is, the cheaper it is, the sweeter it gets to the average consumer. This is a good move heading into the holidays.
It shows great faith in their product that MS didn't announce this at E3. Apparently they didn't feel the need to counter Sony's announcement. That was a good move considering Sony's announcement was only $100 and only for a limited time until 60GB units sell out.
Now, the pressure is on Sony to come up with a competitive price. Anything Sony does now will appear to be reacting to MS and there is probably little to no chance Sony can match the Xbox pricing, on any teir of the product.
Also, it was a very good consumer move to do this before Halo comes out. Had they announced this right after Halo 3 launches and many people spent $399 (or anything at the old pricing) then that would have been a bummer for consumers and lead to bad PR.
very well said my man
So MS are lowering their prices and you are talking about the Wii ?, The Wii has no competition yet either as its not next gen machine(its just a new type of last gen) but soon as a similar type of system is launched by another manufacturer then everyone will be saying yer but the Wii had a year or two head start etc.
"It shows great faith in their product that MS didn't announce this at E3."
Companies never announce price cuts more than a few days before they happen. Otherwise consumers will stop purchasing the product in anticipation of the price cut.
Microsoft probably didn't plan to announce the price cut before it happened, it was most likely a result of the multiple leaks.
so u r saying that the wii sales r not affectin ps3 and 360 sales. im pretty sure if there was no wii then ps3 and 360 would both have higher sale figures. the wii is in compettion with 360 and ps3 even though wii does have crappy graphics. i personally dont like the wii but ya it looks like at this rate wii will dominate this war.
How is Nintendo still charging $249 for a $99 gamecube system? Ok with the controller, bluetooth, and Wifi, it's maybe worth $149. For $30 more, you can get a real next gen system with the high def graphics it should have had! Wii sports is just sad! It has N64 graphics! No excuse for that!
Oh yes! i'm buying one right now. Cant wait for halo and gta.
if its $50 accross the board... why is the core $279??
the core system is such a ripoff the pro the same for 100 bucks more you can get a ps3 with a 60 gig hd wifi wireless controlloers and a blu ray player
forgot to mention to ps3 suports 1080p
Wii sports is awesome. The game is free and not meant for graphics. It is to show the innovation of the controller, not the graphics. Zelda Twilight looks great and nobody is expecting it to compete with PS3/360 graphics. As long as the game is entertaining and delivers the same nintendo experience, who the ***** cares?
Don't get it. The core is probably going to take over in sales this holiday season. Why?
Kid wants a "big boy" system, not the Wii (that age between 11-14 where you are trying to be a "man" I'm sure you all know what i'm talking about), but his mom couldn't afford it. She now walks into the store, sees a 360 with HD graphics, for $20 more than the Wii, more games, more exclusives, and something that her son will like more.
People you guys are IGNORING WHAT IS HAPPENING. You keep saying a HD is necessary to succeed, yet the system with no ability WHATSOEVER to have a HD is selling the most. MS will not drop the core, until they can get the premium under 300, hell they probably are gonna have another price drop for like $30 for the core, and have it be $250 this holiday season as they've been aiming for, and its going to work SPECTACULARLY. $300 for a 360 and Halo 3? OR $300 for a Wii and one other game?
And to Mike, NOT ANY MORE :p. You now have to spend nearly $200 (tax included) more to get the LOWER level PS3. God forbid when the 60 gigs run out they don't drop the price. $350 360 vs $600 PS3? Hm.....
WE ALSO GET A PRICE DROP!!100$ PRICE DROP!!

Microsoft Lowers Price of Xbox 360 by $100 in Canada
Price drop coincides with release of "Madden NFL 08" on Xbox 360, one of many titles that make up the greatest holiday lineup in video game history.
TORONTO, ON — Aug. 7, 2007 — Microsoft Corp. today kicked off the greatest holiday lineup in video game history by announcing it will reduce the Canadian retail price of Xbox 360™ by $100 (CDN) beginning Aug. 8 at Canadian retailers nationwide. Soon to follow, Electronic Arts Inc. (EA) will release its blockbuster video game title "Madden NFL 08" on Aug. 14. "Madden NFL Football," one of the most important mass-appeal franchises in video games, was the top-selling game of 2006 and is the top-selling franchise of the past 10 years. Only Xbox 360 offers a console for all interests and budgets.
"The fact that we have been able to keep our launch price longer than any other console while retaining our leadership position demonstrates that consumers believe in the value of Xbox 360," said Mitch Koch, corporate vice president, Global Retail Sales and Marketing Group, Entertainment and Devices Division at Microsoft. "On the eve of the best holiday games lineup ever and the launch of ‘Madden NFL 08,’ there has never been a better time to jump into Xbox 360."
Xbox 360 will enhance the value of its entire family of consoles beginning on Aug. 8. At a new price of $399.99 (CDN), Xbox 360 offers an unsurpassed experience right out of the box with a 20 GB hard drive, wireless controller, Xbox 360 headset, and more. For those looking for the ultimate value and the freedom to customize their console as they see fit, Xbox 360 Core System now has an estimated retail price (ERP) of $299.99 (CDN). Xbox 360 Core System provides everything gamers need to hit the ground running while giving consumers the ability to add new features and accessories they want. Dressed in black and equipped with a 120GB hard drive, Xbox 360 Elite will be priced at an ERP of $499.99 (CDN) for those who want the premium games and entertainment experience. In anticipation of this year’s largest blockbuster game launch, the Xbox 360 Halo® 3 Special Edition Console will hit store shelves in September with an ERP of $449.99 (CDN). Featuring an authentic Spartan green-and-gold finish, this console will include a matching Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, Xbox 360 20GB hard drive, Xbox 360 Headset an Xbox 360 Play and Charge Kit and more.
In addition to being a great value, Xbox 360 is the only place consumers will be able to play all of this year’s biggest titles: "Guitar Hero III™: Legends of Rock" (RedOctane/Activision), "Halo 3" (Bungie Studios), "Madden NFL 08" (EA) and "Rock Band" (MTV Games). Xbox 360 is also home to the most exclusive games, such as "BioShock" (2K Games), "Lost Odyssey™" (Mistwalker and feelplus Inc.), "Blue Dragon" (Mistwalker and feelplus Inc.), "Scene It? Lights, Camera, Action," (Screenlife), "Project Gotham Racing® 4" (Bizarre Creations Ltd.), "Mass Effect" (BioWare Corp.), "Naruto: Rise of a Ninja" (Ubisoft), and "Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation" (NAMCO BANDAI Games). With a record-setting attach rate of 6.1 games per console sold (NPD, Life-to-date, June 2007), a new price and the greatest holiday games lineup ever, Xbox 360 has proved itself as the home of the best games and entertainment at the best value.
you couldn't shell out 50 bucks when it was a normal price??.....
You wont be disappointed dogg. 360 has the best lineup of games, and a huge library as well. Spend the $50 you save on Live and you will see why 360 is number one.
lets see what you get in the box...
Wireless Controllers - Xbox360 / PS3
Headset - Xbox360
BluRay Player - PS3
480i-1080p Resolution - Xbox360 / PS3
HDD - Xbox360 / PS3
Wifi (though not recommended for gaming) - PS3
Ethernet Cables (the smart choice) - Xbox360
DVD Playback Remote - Xbox360
HDMI Cables - Xbox360
USB Cable - PS3
So from that, a 360 owner would have to buy a bluray player, wifi, and a usb cable to match what the ps3 comes with. All stuff a 360 owner could care less about. Where as the ps3 own, already having spent $600 plus tax on the ps3 console alone would have to buy a blutooth headset, ethernet cable, dvd playback remote, and the HDMI cables just to match what comes with the Xbox360 premium bundle.
Remind me again why I would want to spend 100 bucks more to get a ps3 when 360 has everything i want already. kthxbai
100 dollars , yupee
Noobs. I get the PS3 for -$600 because I have someone steal that $h!t and I sell it...much better than shelling out $5000 for a Xsux 180 and an LDTV. Learn how hijack $#!T and you'll be sk337 in no tym
FOr those of ya bashing the Wii's graphics as crappy. Let me say it doesent matter what the graphics are like, if the game is crap but looks good its still crap. Ive got a wii and let me tell ya there are a bunch of games that are a blast with some more to come. Bowling is one of the sweetest games. U cannot possibly not have fun bowling on the wii. Ill definately bee purchasing a 360 as well after the price drop. There are a bunch of great looking and playing games out. Gotta have one. As for the PS3. Blah.....not really interested in anything out so far. FF13 will rock. Of course prolly not till late 09. The price will have dropped by then so maybe.
Just my 2c
hellraiser..ur a real idiot. The 360 doest have wireless wifi and the wii does... and dont even say anything about HD b/c the Wii was made to go up to 1080i, look it up. Overall, bringing a new way to play, Id say the Wii is worth its price. Ur a loser if u cant enjoy the wii...
Wii can output 1080i with an update....i dont kno y it hasnt yet
Hey when a game has like frame rate slowdown or u know when it works slow some times, is that because of the console or the game ?? I just got a xbox 360 so just wanted to know
Madden has never compared to the 2k series. It's a shame the NFL had to sell out to EA's craptacular designs.
