Microsoft Admits to Trouble In Japan

xbox japanEven though Microsoft is trying tremendously hard to push the 360 in Japan, it just isn't selling well at all. Whether it's company loyalty, ethnic loyalty, a difference in cultural desire, or something else, they know they must act fast. Microsoft seems to think they have a trump card though, two Hironobu Sakaguchi RPGs which will debut around the time that the PlayStation 3 comes out.

"It's not necessarily about making money in the early going. We made a commitment in Japan - I made a commitment to Japan - that the problems we had during our initial launch during Xbox 1 we weren't going to repeat" said Xbox spokesperson Peter Moore in an interview. "And I think more importantly, Japan publishers are totally and firmly behind the Xbox 360 platform. They look at what we're attempting to do in Japan, but more importantly, what we are doing in North America and Europe".

But someone in Japan is admitting to trouble, "Globally we are doing very well but Japan has always been tough," said Microsoft's Japan president and CEO of Darren Huston during a company event. "We launched early and with not enough Japan-specific content" adding that "I can't say I'm beaming with confidence in Japan"

# They'll never...Guest 2006-07-14 00:29
Miscrosoft wont make big on the xbox360 in japan. They never will, specially after the ps3 comes out. I myself already starting to regret getting this damn Postponed360. The system has maybe 5 or 6 games out that are WORTH buying and keeping, not to mention the fact that half the games that are suppoed to be out for the system arent comming till 2007. And the games that were supposed to be released in the next couple of months get pushed back another 6 months. This ***** is getting old fast.

it doesn't matter whether you make the same mistakes or not.

you'll always make SOME mistake.

the important thing is to make the consumers THINK that xbox is BETTER.

it's not gona happen by making it the official console of 2006 worldcup.

it's not going to happen by making it able to stand on itself.

it's going to happen by becoming the easier alternative(che ap AND fun)

gamecube was cheap but all the fun was in PS2

etc.

xbox 360, just measly 6 or so japanese developed games out of 100 estimated isn't going to help much.

they got the cheap right, so they need to be less greedy now.

OMFG I'd be able to do so much more than those bastards....

so will most of you too.

they SO SUCK...

If the 360 isn't selling well in Japan then I guess this proves that the japs have a bad taste in games. I guess they only like crappy games & systems.

Let them say what they want, the fact that Microsoft is still desperately trying to gain a foothold instead of pulling out means that Japan is an important market to them.

# Xbox 360 never had next gen jingle and shine to me.Chavagnatze 2006-07-14 07:20
It is something about the xbox 360 that I just dont like. It seems to be transitional technology to me. It just bridges the gap between this generation and next generation entertainment. There are some Xbox 360 games that I do like, however next generation game consoles will have to be full fledged entertainment control centers and will require a level of functionality that escapes the capabilities of this generation's gaming consoles. I see that performance in PS3 because it was intended to meet that requirement the day it was concieved. The PS3 employs a generous amount of next generation technologies to meet the requirment. Xbox 360, however, was designed using a template from this generation's thinking and sculpted using today's technology just to be the first console to emerge and that is its main flaw. The Japanese see this flaw thus the Xbox 360's success in Japan won't materialize (To be an entertainment control center rather than just a game console requires a lot more capabilities and technology such as PS3's Blu- Ray drive, Bluetooth EDR, Wi-Fi, RJ-45 support, etc. In other words, Networking and device interconnectivi ty is a must to be an entertainment center. Try all of this with your NES or Sega Genesis. Those were just game consoles of there generation. You couldn't watch movies on them or listen to music like you can do with your PS2 or Xbox 1 because all they could do was play games developed for their very specific hardware. Watching movies and playing music on game consoles was an addition to this gaming generation. Next generation "gaming consoles," if we can still call them that, will have to have more capabilities and functionality than this generation. That is why we can't just expect "game consoles" anymore. It is time for evolution.)

# you know what will happen Chav...Vecha 2006-07-14 08:20
gaming will become a second priority...if you want a media center...go buy one.

I want a "gaming console"

So I would buy a 360 and wii...the main focus of both the 360 and wii..is games(the 360 has media funtions...it connects to an ipod...to PCs...to media centers...has wi-fi...and focuses on games)

The ps3...focus on the Cell and Blu-ray...both of which don't have "games" as the first priority.

# The 360 doesn't come with Wi-Fi.Chavagnatze 2006-07-14 08:34
You have to add it. you shouldn't have to pay 100 dollars for a feature that should have been standard.

# Entertainment will become the priority.Chavagnatze 2006-07-14 08:46
Every aspect of the entertainment experience will have to be formulated. That means games will be a large part of the entertainment experience that have to be considered equally with the other aspects of entertainment.

An media center has seperate components.

You shouldn't have to piggy back off of a PC for extra data storage and data arangement. That is what the Xbox 360 does. It should do these things by it's self. Expansion by way of USB is used as a scapegoat to hide the fact that the device should have come with the device in the first place. We need something that does more than play games but still offers very good entertainment quality with games.

360 doing bad in Japan doesnt really mean anything for me... Japanese games seem very phony to me... with the exception of some truly great titles. (No, MGS is not a good game) American games are the future. Japanese games are the past.

Who cares about them? All they play are JRPGs, the extremely repetitive ones that have the same template for stories, and you always get to play as some *****y emo teenager.

We would have stone age technology in the electronics worlds and many otherr areas of mass production without the Japanese.

# The 360 SucksGuest 2006-07-16 06:25
The 360 will NEVER get a grip on Japan no matter what games come out for it. They hate American consoles over there. Japan only cares for Sony and Nintendo. Also, if you have seen the numbers the 360 has put out lately, the 360 just got past 2 million units sold in AMERICA and somewhere over 1 million everywhere else in the world. I can honestly say that is an embarassing number. The hype for the 360 is almost completely dead. Everyone is waiting for the PS3 and the Nintendo Wii. I personally think the PS3 will dominate the way it has for the past 10 years. They have Blu-Ray and that's all they need if you think about it. They distribute 2 million PS3 at launch and that's 2 million Blu-Ray players. That could lead to more consumer support for the format. Then you have the brand name, Playstation. Sony has it all planned out. The 360 will end up like the Dreamcast in a few years. Isn't it strange Microsoft is making an external HD-DVD drive to compete with the PS3 like Dreamcast made a DVD drive to compete with the PS2? Microsoft is S***.
