Microsoft accused of stealing modder's idea for fixing the 360 |
Ó
We peeked into Apophis' German language website, and we found quite an in-depth explanation (though our weblator didn't help much for us to fully understand), and what we gathered is that he and his friends checked out the guts of his Xbox 360 after hearing about numerous reports of people getting the red ring of doom symbol.
What the modder found was, in our weblator's terms, a "stupid constructional defect". Apophis found out that the cooling system of the GPU, or Graphics Processing Unit, was totally insufficient, and provided pretty pictures to prove it. He then declared that every Xbox will get the red ring of death eventually, especially if graphics-crunching games are played on it more frequently and in long periods of time.
Apophis also noted that the solution is applicable to Xboxes released recently. First-generation units, he said, were built a little differently than the rest of the other units in such a way that they have better ventilation.
The modder, however, noticed that the Xbox 360 is recently using the method that he posted on the web, which he wants to be credited for. He even sent an email to MaxConsole, in mangled English:
Hi,
i am the mean that found the fail with overheating GPU.
Now i see on you page that MS put the the new cooling in the x360.
I find that not ok anybody take my things and nobody say thanks to me

MS steel my concept and nobody say tank you
Cu
Apophis
Currently there are no reports of any lawsuits to be filed, which we aren't really expecting. But, just in case Microsoft considers to credit him, will they give him an Xbox Elite? Or even due credit if his claims are true?

Like I said before.....the 360s main problems that caused the ring of death were not overheating problems. It was the cause of bad manufacturing of the ram chips. This was why the system would lock up at start up for a majority of the people with the problems....also randomly in game lock ups were attributed to this.
he's modding the xbox for piracy (why else would you need to mod it?) and he wants credit from Microsoft? What a clown.
where can i get a better/additional heatsink for my X360 without having to send it to MS & hope to get 1?
To be honest I'm actively involved in the repair of 3ROL 360s. I'm have fixed many for resale and I have spent hours researching cooling methods and fixes in the last 6 months. I have not seen this fix until today. I don't know how MS would of found it and stole it if the method wasn't previously released to the modding community. And to the poster 'sss', the 3ROL issues ARE caused by the GPU overheating and causing the motherboard to reflex under the 360's x-clamps. The GPU loses good contact with it's heatsink and this causes the 360 to freeze in some cases and not boot at all in other cases. Don't believe me? Below is a link to a thread from Xbox-Scene detailing the success rate of replacing the x-clamps in the 360 and re-applying thermal paste to the GPU and GPU heatsink. The success rate is close to 95% out of over 300 Xbox 360s. http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=595746
Really, the console overheating... how should we fix this? by adding a cooler! EH! that's my idea! No that's mine. get it, everyone knew they should have added a cooling unit when they got overheating consoles...
keep complanin about ur system and the reasons why it sux b@llz red ring of death hahhahaha dam man ma PS3 never had any problems and i dnt even have to wrry about bull***** like this plus it seems like its even morereliable than the wii good luck 360 lovers for all u shall achieve the red ring of death sooner or l8er only time will tell/............
Do you think adding one of those aftermarket higher CFM fans is helpful? I'm refering to an internal mod, not a crappy Nyko intercooler. I haven't had a problem, but I would like more peace of mind during long playing sessions.
I don't quite see how this guy can take credit for the idea of placing an additional heatsink on an overheating component. I mean...that's what heatsinks are designed for. And frankly, as familiar as I'm sure he is with the hardware, I'd bet the 360 design team is slightly more in tune with it, so I'd bet this was an option they've had right along, just something they hoped they'd never need to do. And even if he is right that MS never thought of PUTTING A HEAT SINK ON SOMETHING HOT, I'd put money down that dozens of other modders out there thought of it and planned implementation long before this guy did. I've never had an issue with the RROD, and only 1 among 14 friends with the system that I know personally has (all of whom have had it for more than a year), and of the same group of friends, 12 ended up with failed PS2 DVD drives over the system's lifetime. I'm throwing this in just as commentary about the guy's utter confidence that all 360s will eventually fail, based on his "intimate understanding" of the system hardware.
so no one is copying no one.
right, well ok you claim that only 1 of your 14 freinds has had a failed 360 but 12 out of those 14 had a failed ps2 drive, yet stats already show that 360 has a higher failure rate. ps2 failure rate of 2.63 and 360 of about 8.5 so in thoery the cahnces of 12 failing out of 14 is about 4.87% but the chances of only 1 of your 360's failin is 11.23% do the math, i do detect a hint of fanboyism.
Seriously, I have gone through 3, yes three sony playstation 2's since they launched all dying to the drive/laser failure. I have had my 360 since launch and never had rod. You are the fanboy piece of ***** and quite frankly I'm sick of it. Eat Balls and go have fun with all 18 PS3 games while the rest of us enjoy all the 360 games (too many to count) and we have a killer platform in the 360.
M$ doesnt give a fu/ck about your dumb ass and how many times your gaybox overheats and gets the 3 red lights of failure. You need to realize that and go outside and make some friends you f/a/g.
I uhh...can't exactly change reality to fit your statistics. I apologize that the actual numbers that me and people i know have experienced don't coencide with how you think it should be. If anyone's pushing a fanboy agenda, i think it would be you.
people who talk ***** about other people need to go make some friends you f/a/g.
Just like your PS3 has never had any problems, neither have either of my 360s, and on top of that, I actually have games to play! Who wins now?
I forgot, you can fold protein on your system! That sure beats Gears of War /sarcasm
mein langinge ist suck.
Read most of those posts.....Most of those guys reply with "video still freezes occasionally". The easiest thing to point out that goes wrong with high end electronics to is to say "they overheat". Do you really thing the Microsoft architects would have waited and not installed extra heat sinks this long and other new cooling methods in their consoles when all the problems are from the very first batch of consoles?....Hardly I had a bad console too (it was a launch day console). They I got a referbished one back after I sent it in with no modifications to the heating or cooling. No new thermal paste or anything yet mine works fine and has been for more than a year now. I also run the most taxing appliction on it (which is watching hd-dvds). Don't believe me? google it.....
"people who talk ***** about other people need to go make some friends you ***." So I guess you need to go make friends huh? Hypocrite...
Adding a blue light behind a fan or something very basic, is technically a mod...so ya, don't speak unless you know what you are talking about... Now, as far as the article goes...it does seem to be the same type of cooling system...but unfortunately an Idea is free for all and the only way to make it yours is to get a trademark/copyright on it....
Once the board has flexed the x-clamp fix can only do so much depending on how warped your motherboard is, yes extra cooling is needed to prevent the board from flexing again. People were using a heatgun to straighten the motherboard before the x-clamp fix was founded. The x-clamp removable fix reduces the ability for the board to flex under the CPU + GPU chips because it holds the chips to the heatsinks tighter than the x-clamps can. The extra headsink MS has added will draw heat away from the GPU and the motherboard, putting less stress on the x-clamps and prevent the motherboard from flexing. Previous, MS have been adding extra e-proxy glue around the GPU chip on refurbs to maintain the contact between the GPU and the heatsink when the board flexs under heat. it works on somes boxes but fails on others. It's wasn't the ideal solution because it doesn't get rid of the heat from the GPU and it's still vulnerable to 3ROL. As I said before 95% of people (out of over 300 people) have "Fixed the 3RLOD, No issues at all now, No freezes, works fine". Why don't you believe those stats. The fixed is open to variance and different parts, so no everyone will get the sae result. Most people that are still having freezing issues after replacing the x-clamps haven't apply the fix correctly. The contact with the heatsinks need to be perfect else you are going to continue to have problems.
@ Mr. Sensible Yes it helps but it generates A LOT more noise.
If some random German guy can find out the issue of the overheating 360s, I'm sure that Microsoft's underpaid college educated engineers can too.
I had a 1st shipment xbox that I had recieved for christmas just after they came out. I had it for about a year then it got the 3RLOD. I then was forced to buy a new one, but eventually found that tutorial about the X-Clamps so I did that. It worked like a charm.
