Microsoft about to buy Lionhead Studios |
Listed in: Xbox 360 Tags: xbox 360 titles
Various rumors at GDC point at a highly possible sale of UK developer Lionhead to Microsoft. According to gamesindustry.biz, the companies are in the negotiation process. The deal could be announced in the coming days.
Other possible buyers, among them Ubisoft and EA, seem to be out of the question now.
After poor sales of Lionhead's latest games - The Movies (the Xbox version having already been shelved because of this) and Black & White 2, the company underwent restructuring a while ago, reducing it's game output to 2 titles. As a consequence, 50 people had to leave the company.
There's no doubt that if Microsoft should secure this deal, Lionhead will at least be partially shifting focus to development of X360 games, and/or titles already in development being ported to the platform.

B&W2 is a boring semi average title, that despite its kicks, is not worth the full price it once was at 50 bucks (20-30 it is now aint so bad). And the movies? What a piece of garbage!
MS, you will be wastig money if you think this is going to help your position! It will just add on to the handful of other crappy developers you continue to willingly purchase, that USED to produce good games.
No one is going to tell me kameo is worth more than 20 bucks. The gameplay mechanics are flawed and the worlds are bland and thoughtless - for a title that has been in development for over 6 years it really stinks.
Not to mention the crap FPS game PDZ is. And Bungie? Lets face it, HALO 2 was a great game but it didnt do for gaming what the original HALO did. And the fact that Bungie contantly denies they are developing HALO 3? You know they are, we all know they are - they need to quit being childish pricks and just admit it. It is not like saying "yes we are developing another HALO title" is going to reveal the games plot!!
And viva piniata? I can understand MS wanting to reach out to other markets, but a game this light hearted from bungie? I am sorry, I dont see it being anything more than a mediocre Animal Crossing wanna-be. I will be very suprised if this game comes close to topping it.
Believe me I am not dissing the 360, I am digging Oblivion and I love playing burnout without any slow down - not to mention the gorgeous graphics and camera work in FN:R3 and its addictive gameplay.
It is just the developers they have been setteling for lately are crap. They would benefit more from buying someone like Blizzard, but that will never happen. Some awesome games come out of that camp, but they are a strange bunch.
