Mark Rein: UT3's Xbox 360 version hampered by modding troubles |
Ó
A bit of bad news for those of us eagerly anticipating the release of Unreal Tournament III (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) on the Microsoft Xbox 360 - it seems that we're going to have to play the waiting game for a little bit longer, as the development of that particular version hasn't even begun yet. Ouch.
This news comes directly from Epic Games vice president Mark Rein, who revealed the Xbox 360 version's current state of affairs. It seems that one of Unreal Tournament III's main draws - that is, user-created content, or mods - is causing the delay, due to the fact that the development team has yet to figure out a way to make them possible on the Xbox 360. His statement, verbatim:
The PS3 is an open system, and they embrace user-created content. But there isn't really a way to do that on the 360. So our job, when we finish the PS3 version, and we've taken a little break, is to sit down with Microsoft and to figure out how we can do mods on their system.
Sad, sad news indeed. Here's hoping that the team finds a way around this particular hurdle posthaste.

this is so silly, look up the specs on both systems. play the exclusives on both systems and you'll realize the xbox 360 is not as good as the ps3. 33% failure rate for the xbox 360 means the xbox 360 is crap. i have all the systems and i'm currently on my fifth xbox 360 and i'm done with microsoft and their micro life xbox 360.
Well you obviously don't have a 360....because anyone i've talked to that actually has a 360 and PS3 has said they don't touch their PS3 because they are playing 360....and ya, I look at the exclusives and I see 360's are better still....so your views are moot.
Anyways, if you had any idea at all you would know this is a certification problem and not a technical one.
Epic could make an in-game editor the same as Halo 3's forge editor, and players could send the maps to each other via live....unfortunately they don't want to do that because they want you to but the PC version as well in order to get their editor.
It's a big rip-off anyways for consoles (having to buy the game twice) so mods can lick my nuts, as much as I would like to make my own maps....they are not needed...
If Epic maintains the stance on having the mods/maps being created on PC so they can be used by all 3 systems...and MS maintains their stance on no outside content....well...there will be no mods for the 360 version....which we pretty much all knew from begining anyways.
The only ways U3 will compete with H3 on 360 is if they have a better editor, and it's simple and within the game...otherwise U3 will bomb and it doesn't matter....
No user created content helps preserves our safety on Live. Allow user created content created on a PC, the next thing you know we have a virus hidden in map code that can render your 360 useless. I see exactly where microsoft is coming from.
Due to the fact that Epic would have to host the files on their own private servers and there would be 3 different versions of the same maps/mods, they decided to NOT do mods for PS3 and 360 because it would cause not only a hell of a lot of server payload but because of bandwidth. The current state of mods is that only PC is going to have it (hence the UT3 PC release this year). Until Sony and Microsoft can agree to hosting the content for Epic the games for those platforms are on hiatus.
I must have missed the point where this interview is old? Also, they didn't cancel the mods for the PS3, it is still active. They just dismissed the idea about cross-platform play. So im not sure where you got your info :/
The files that are created for the PC mods are exactly the same as the one for the PS3. The PS3 version of the game is preloaded with the ability to recognize the files and save them in their correct locations.
For the QJ response "we will have to wait a little longer" my response is that I will not wait. UT3 for me is no longer a must have. There are so many great games out there and many more to be soon released that Epic have lost their chance to secure my 60 Bucks.
Sadly the bottom line will always be money.
Technical issues are a screen thats all. Hosting costs money and delivery of service costs money. Who does what who gets what?
If we look at Halo the Bungie Microsoft deal was a partnership with agreements made to the effect that the Studio would produce with the financial backing of the partner company. It worked and both sides are satisfied. We the consumer have benefitted from this deal.
The original Unreal Game was in my opinion brilliant but the Unreal Tournament s are just beating the donkey till it dies. Epic should wake up and move on. The unreal engine is a great product but will soon be lost if they do not develop it further to encompass what is going on in the gaming world.
There are so many excellent online game arenas in which to play and the expertise in getting these games to the consumer is being very finely tuned and with great results. I always liked Epic and preferred them to others as EA but while Epic shoves it weight around it will lose ground to others very fast as they are more nimble and quicker to try something new. Gaming has reached a level of innovation that has never been seen before this present time and for what ever reason delays occur they will be detrimental as the consumer is an aggressive medium that dictates what it wants through its purchasing power. At no time as this been more clear than right now for when a consumer has 60 Dollars to spend on a game its always down to what is available right now and what are the choices.
Waiting 2 years for a game will only be successful on rare occasions. Halo was that occasion and its fans did not feel let down. However even hardcore fans although very happy with Halo 3 recognise that the graphics in other games released on or around the same time are equal or better. The gameplay itself is good but not different.
...i jus play the games. editing is not a must have.
Console owners are made up off many casual gamers, not jus hardcore
if you think the 360 is crap we will se what online is beter to play this game Xbox live or PSN yea there is no competion everybody knows xbox is beter and for how long have you guys said that there will be good games for the PS3, it was about a year and there still is no games because the PS3 sucks
Sam get off your horse and go drink some milk. And no I am not a PS3 fanboy as I love my Xbox 360 but your comments are just too stoopid it credit anything but a moronic response. PS3 people please ignore the above Neanderthal.
well all I can say is bad luck. However despite the 33% the warranty holds and many gamers are having fun. I love Halo, sorry its not on the PS3 so I dont own one. I do have a Sony radio though.
If your done with your xbox and you think its crap then please consider donating it to a childrens home as I am sure they will be very happy and then you can get around to some serious gaming with your PS3.
will do.
tard.
