Major Nelson: "Xbox Live security not compromised"

Major Nelson has posted an official statement regarding the current status of the Xbox Live network's security. Speculation about this issue was furthered by reports about cases of Xbox Live fraud cases. Microsoft has promised to look into the issue and, well, here's what the Major has to say about it:

Despite some recent reports and speculation, I want to reassure all of our 6 million Xbox Live members that we have looked into the situation and found no evidence of any compromise of the security of the Xbox Live Network or Bungie.net.

There have been a few isolated incidents where malicious users have been attempting to draw personal information from unsuspecting users and use it to gain access to their LIVE account. This is a good time to remind our members that they should never give out any of their personal information.

We added the emphasis on that last part, because really, while it's already been said a million times over, it's never a bad thing to be reminded to take extra care. While it's good that Microsoft hasn't found any evidence of Xbox Live being hacked and all, everybody should still take extra steps to guard their personal information.

You never know what to believe with these complaints. Did somebody give out enough personal information for somebody to buy points? I wouldn't think MS would make that possible unless somebody had someone's private info already.

I don't believe this just like I didn't believe the fall update bricked unmodified consoles.

They got hacked, regardless if it was over the internet or through social tactics, someone who deals with Xbox Live, provided information to compromise users.

This is like saying if your bank provided information for someone else to access your account, that they didnt get hacked into.

This was a sloppy mistake in Microsofts side and thats what happens. It happens all the time, social engineering is a big problem because even the smallest detail can be used to get more. It doesn't matter if its 1 person or all 5 Million Xbox Live users, they got compromised and they dont want to admit it.

How do you know that? Some people are stupid no doubt. Everyone always says don't give out personal information, but some people still do. I always get fake e-mails from what looks like paypal asking me to verify my account information. Somebody out there falls for this scam. If somebody calls XBOX live and gives the right information they can buy points or change account info. Some dumbass out there was talking to somebody else and foolishly gave enough information to do this. They don't want to admit "Hey I made a mistake," they get on forums and bi*ch and blame Microsoft. I buy my MS points at the store, not because I don't trust MS, but because I don't want my credit card info floating around 10 different companies. I don't buy anything online with a credit card.

You talk alot but have not a dime of evidence.. Why were you there. How would this even compromise LIVE. If some one stole from you they have not compromised your country. It's just you. SO don't try and Sony your way into this ..... LIVE still kicks the snot out of any thing sony has or ever will.
