Leave it to Major Nelson to have the first look at all the fun features Microsoft has with its online feature. He's got a new post up chronicling what we suppose is the internal test of Games for Windows Live. His test subject: Halo 2 Vista.

Of course, he glosses over the finer points for a bit of bulleted action, but that's just fine. He manages to make it seem like playing Live on the computer is pretty much like being on the Xbox again, albeit with a CPU tower beside your screen:
  • After installing H2 for Vista, I was able to sign in to Xbox Live from the 'Guide' within the game, and see all of my LIVE friends, messages etc. (above and here)
  • I hooked up my Xbox 360 Wireless Controller and my Wireless headset to my PC via the Wireless Gaming Receiver.
  • I was able to send and receive text and voice messages from the guide to other LIVE members who were on their Xbox 360Â’s. You press the Guide button on your controller and the guide pops up over the game – just like on the Xbox 360.
  • Got my first Halo 2 Achievement (and added another 30 points to my GS)
  • While I was playing through the first level of the campaign, I was on a voice chat over my wireless headset with Litheon who was playing Gears of War on his Xbox 360.
While we don't necessarily think it'll be what he terms the "new era" of gaming, you can't deny how sweet fragging would be on multiple platforms.

i agree, i kinda fell conned now that i have bought the 360, i hope GOW never comes out on the PC or at least in 3 years, that way at least that way us 360 owners dont feel conned as much.
