MajorHD-DVD or Blu-ray has been an on-going battle ever since both players came out. These two have been pitted against each other much like console rivalries (PlayStation vs Xbox, NDS vs PSP, etc.). Since there have been a lot of reports floating around that Xbox 360 will have a taste of HD-DVD technology, be all ears as Major discuss the finer points of HD-DVD versus Blu-ray, along with some interviews with industry experts.

Aside from that, there are also other interviews like Xbox Live ArcadeÂ’s "Silver Surfer." Has a reputation of 4 and a half stars, gamerscore of 7920 and toughing it out with the Pros.

If you want to get to hear both interviews and other effects, click on the download link below the article.

» No contest really

Blu-Ray:

+ Better format

+ 90% of movie studio support.

+ More support from electronics companies. (Panasonic, Sony, Samsung to name a few)

+ PS3 support.

+ Has Player that also plays Next Gen Games. The PS3

+ Best player(PS3) Cost 499 or 599 (HDMI support) and both support 1080P.

+ Almost nothing is compressed on the movie.

+ Sound better than HDDVD since it's not compressed. Actually many things aren't compressed.

- Name recognition is low (this should change come PS3)

- Because Sony is supporting it, hating fanboys go on a rampage to denounce the format.

HDDVD:

+ Good name recognition.

+ Toshiba players cost 499 (no HDMI) and 750 (with HDMI and other small features)

+ 360 bundled with player will most likely be 599 (or more) but will not have HDMI nor support for 1080P

- None of the players support 1080P

- Toshiba seems to be the only manufacture to be making players.

- Has the Playstation brand to compete with, Yikes!

- Poorly supported by movie studios and electronic companies.

- Microsoft cannot put out a player for the 360 at a lost because it's a peripheral. They wont get any money from sales of movies and games are not supported. Considering HDDVD internal drives for PC are for sale at around $400+ it's very doubtful MS Can offer a considerably cheaper alternative.

Similar:

+ Movie price

- New DRM, which is the same for both despite what ignorant fanboys say.

- Competing with DVDs for market share.

+ HD playback that definitely makes a different.

- Currently expensive players

» nicely said, THeProfessor

I just hope blu-ray wins, just to stop microsoft shipping HD DVD addon...

IT WILL SUCK.

DON'T EVEN TRY

by kura - 2006-07-17 03:43
» oops, sounds too negative.

I didn't mean to flame 360 or anything.

I'm just saying that in terms of history, add-ons never actually soared.

Nintendo Gloves

Playstation Gloves

CD addons for previous generation consoles.

Unless....they were bundled.

DDR

Guitar Hero

Eyetoy

And as we all know, HD-DVD won't support games.

GIVE UP MICROSOFT

Think about the investors!

why not use his mygamercard image instead of cut-pasting his old gamercard into a new image? weird.

"+ Almost nothing is compressed on the movie.

Eh? Compression is a STANDARD technique for digital movies! Without it, they will probably be about 10 times the size. Audio takes less space, so you may have uncompressed audio, but don't expect it for movies.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD supports the SAME codecs (COpression, DECompression);

http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/

Scroll down to 3.3 at the bottom of the page.

Hence the compression used on Blu-ray is no better or worse than HD-DVD.

"Microsoft cannot put out a player for the 360 at a lost because it's a peripheral."

Most websites I've seen expect the peripheral will sell for $250 or less. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

» @ TheProfessor

uhhh, since when was it confirmed that the HD-DVD addon for the 360 will not support HDMI? in fact, recent posts on this site have stated quite the contrary.

» Addition to #5

Currently, HD-DVD movies are released on dual-layered discs (30GB) with the superior VC-1 codec. Blu-ray movies are released on single-layered discs (25GB) with the older inferior MPEG-2 codec.

Hence comparisons of HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies released so far note the superior quality of HD-DVD movies. :|

» lets see

where did you hear no 1080p? all of the hd-dvd players have HDMI, and all the ones i see output in 1080p...

and who in the hell actually likes watching movies on their console? its much better to have a dedicated remote, with dedicated keys, and a dedicated player. because almost all movie players in consoles cut features.

and all the failed pariphials where because you needed a game. the hd-dvd addon wont support games so its more than likely going to be more of a sucess than other parephials.

remember all of sony's other media products? mini-disk walkmans, umd's, betamax?

and hd-dvd addon bundled with the 360 will not exceed 449 for obvious reasons.

» stupid people

If you guys listen to the podcast. It definitely sounds like bluray sucks ass, and hd dvd rocks.

Silver Surfer is the head of xbox live arcade, Greg Canessa, not just some random douche. *****ing retards.

by suge - 2006-07-17 08:38
» ...

The current players out now do not output 1080p, though the discs do have the option... apparently.

by Dj Natas - 2006-07-17 09:08
» Yeah I heard the podcast...

Blue Ray already won the format war, movie studios, thats all you need to know. The podcast was great, but Major Nerdson works for M$, he made HDDVD sound like the second coming of christ:)

by Vecha - 2006-07-17 10:41
» wow...prof...

Untill you made that post..I didn't think you were a sony fanboy...but now...I defiantly know you are..

"has sony brand to face yike!" Umm yea..fanboy boy

"is the better format" yep your opinion sure is the best.

"Doesn't output 1080p" now I know you are a dumbass.

by Clessy - 2006-07-17 17:40
» Shut up kids

I have a HD DVD player which none of you do and it out puts 1080i max and theres only one version of toshibas hd player at 499 which has HDMI 1.2.

by spud6754 - 2006-07-17 21:07
» mmmmmmmmmm really?

They sure do make HDDVD sound great now dont they but what else would you expect from Mircosoft.

Im not saying they didnt sound honest because I beleived they did. All im saying is can this source really be trusted 100%?

Seeing is beleiving

by Jacob - 2006-07-17 23:44
» HD-DVD

I've checked out both..HD just looks better.

The only way Blue ray has a chance because sony is forcing you to get one with PS3.

by suge - 2006-07-18 01:46
» ...

Thanks Clessy, that put that vecha dude in his place.

by spud6754 - 2006-07-18 01:48
» hybrid

Gotta love Hybrid HD DVD discs. How sweet is that going to be? You can but a hybrid knowing that you can play it in your new HD DVD player but also any DVD player about.

That is a fantastic idea for if you just wanna watch a movie in bed or over at somebody elses.

by Annie Body - 2006-07-18 04:24
» #16

Actually, it does nothing of the sort.

The HD-DVD players CURRENTLY available support up to 1080i, however HD-DVD supports 1080p;

http://www.blu-ray.com/faq/

(See section 3.3 - bottom of page)

Therefore we can expect 1080p HD-DVD players sometime in the future.
