Maintenance Feature Included In Xbox 360 Dashboard Update?

The latest Xbox 360 dashboard update has failed to mention one feature: a cache clear. This "maintenance" feature is performed by going to the system blade and then memory. Once you're there, press Y on either the HDD or a MU and then press X, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, X. A pop-up blade will appear saying, "This will perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices. Do you want to continue?" Pick a 'yes' or a 'no'.

Be reminded that the clear cache feature will remove all game software updates and may in a way damage your console. So perform this feature at your own risk. Remember, we warned you. It is also rumored that using this method will also remove updates on Oblivion, allowing you to perform the unlimited gold exploit. So whoever is brave enough to try this out, let us know if it actually works.

Thanks Hugo, for the heads up!

Yes its true all Updates will be deleted after the maintenance. I checked this with CoD2. The game asks again to install the Autoupdate via XBox Live.

# What about downloaded content?Guest 2006-06-09 03:31
Does it store downloads like the wizard tower on the HD before moving it to cache when you boot the game? Basically will this erase downloads like new cars for pgr3 or oblivion wizard tower

I believe it just removes the automatic game updates since the downloads are manually controlled and stored it has no reason to keep them in the cache.

Downloads should be safe I am 90% sure.

this doesnt rollback or remove any xbox dashboard updates, it just clears the cache on the hd similar to oblivion's method.

Why do you need to clear up the cache. Is there a benefit doing it?

Some games use it to take a load off the console for loading and other things. I know for a fact oblivion will use it to cache the terrain so it doesn't take as long to load it when going in and out of buildings

What if you had the core 360 and Oblivion? Is it even playable without the HD? Seems like even with the hard drive it has its problems with loading and the framerate is not very stable.

to all people saying this is new is it not the same as holding a when booting up your console? I heard that clears your cache and has been a feature since day 1. and the reason oblivion is so jumpy, slow etc is that its just not been optimized very well for 360. The console is powerful enough to run it really smooth but it just doesn't. the should make a decent patch that cleans up the way it caches data instead of patching bugs that people like using.

# Alternate Solution!!!Guest 2006-06-15 14:14
Guys! I found a better and easier way to solve any problems with patches! Ok, bear with me here... I have a premium 360, with the hard drive, I know there were caches loaded that slowed down my Oblivion to 10x slower... ok, heres the thing, instead of pressing xx left bumper right bumper xx, this is what you do...

go to system screen in xbox dashboard, then go to memory, then HIGHLIGHT the HDD, then click "y"... you will come up to a screen where it says format, click yes to format, then you have to enter your serial number (on the back of the 360), then it will completely reformat your HDD, which should solve any problems!

I had a personal problem with Oblivion where it was 10x slower, and my friend had similar problems (as mention from other posts) with other games, and it all worked. maybe with core version you have to do the xx bumpers and stuff, but with premium u gotta format the HDD and ur set!

WARNING: will completely erase anything on the HDD inlcuding music pics and saves...
