Lost Planet Only Using 60% of Xbox 360's Potential

lostplanetIn an interview with Eurogamer, Keiji Inafune, the well-known creator of the Megaman and Onimusha videogame series, has revealed details of his latest Xbox 360 title, Lost Planet. He couldn't hide his admiration for Microsoft's next-gen console and even said: We've probably only hit about 60 per cent of the Xbox 360's potential. He also went to brush off comments that early titles haven't lived up to the pre-launch hype, and went to defend the console, The more years you study a platform, the better you get. Some of the games you'll see in three of four years will be truly amazing.

Lost Planet is a science-fiction action game based on an entirely frozen planet. Having a similar camera angle to Resident Evil 4, it swaps between on foot and mech based gameplay, and showcases some very impressive weather effects. It's said that the setting is based in part on John Carpenter's The Thing. It is due for release in the US in early 2007.

Inafune and his development team wants to make sure that they were using the hardware to its fullest potential. It won't just be about stunning graphics. They have to mean something. As Lost Planet is about a frozen planet, managing thermal energy plays a key factor in the game. The energy gauge is affected by the weather, which the team spent long hours realizing on-screen. Inafune explains:

If you're out in the cold and the wind, the speed at which you utilise your energy will quicken. If you're out of the cold, you don't need as much of this heat energy to power your vital suit. So there are a lot of different strategic elements. You're going to have to plan which areas to go through based on how much fuel you have, and of course killing enemies will yield more fuel so you'll have to ask yourself if it's worth fighting them to get more, or just to let them go.

The team released a two-part demo on Xbox Live Marketplace during E3 and the first impression was that it's quite easy to remain alive despite the massive dose of ammo being thrown around. Inafune explains that it's a standard practice not to make the demo too difficult that people are dying in 30 seconds or so. It wasn't deliberately made it easy but apparently Westerners find the game too easy, whereas Japanese find it quite hard. And that's where the balancing act come to play. Who knows, we can probably expect some adjustments in the game to suit the West's penchant for difficult games.

Alright the demo is fun ad all but the graphics didnt really blow me away. Dont get me wrong they are good but there not that good. If this game is using 60% then what is gears of war using? Also one more thing. They pushed this idea of the true next generation gameplay and im still waiting to see it. The game really didnt feel that different from any other game. Just my opinion. Hopefully by the time there done they will add some next gen gamplay because for right now its not there.

yeah other than some new effects that the 360 offers the game looks like it could be run on an original xbox. Maybe the demo isnt as good as the real game.

# doesnt mean anythingGuest 2006-06-05 09:03
all this using x % of processing power doesnt really mean anything other than Capcoms and every other companies games that come out in the future will represent bigger leaps forward in graphics.

I think that in the Next Gen of Consoles, (360,wii,ps3), each generation of software will represent a bigger step forward than what we are used to with xbox or ps2.. Isnt gears of war still using a single core? I think cliffy B said that somewhere

# Lost Planet graphics are great.Guest 2006-06-05 12:23
I take his 60 percent potential as nothing. It's not even 30 percent, but you are just plain stupid to think that Lost Planet can be run on an original Xbox. Just. Plain. Stupid. Did you even play the game on Hi Def? Get the phuck outta here COMMENT #2. Can you create a game better? Can you? I mean, really, you sit there and bash the game already in demo form? Again, i can't say it enough. You really think this game can be on the OG Xbox? WHAT???? Disconnect right now.

Let's not get carried away though. No game in second generation is close to that stat he put up. Not even Gears of War. He's just hyping up the game alot. He should be. THe game is loads of fun for any one who didn't play the demo. REMEMBER this game is an Xbox exclusive. Looks like it's gonna be a good game.

Stupid M$ homers-- think that they own the freaking world, and the box can do no harm.

The game looks alright on a basic HD set-- its just not 2 giant leaps forward. So far the only game that has really wowed me has been Oblivion. I made the investment in the 360 this gen and its my first M$ console and Im really praying that it comes out ahead, but right now I really havent seen much out of the console-- or gameplay from the PS3 for that matter.

# Game is amazingGuest 2006-06-06 04:22
Only a moron would state otherwise. The Snow effects, the texturing on the bugs. In 1080i it is awesome.

I still beleive Kameo and Oblivion are the two best looking games I have seen tho.
