Games for Windows Live - Image 1

Didn't the ability to play fun games with other people used to be free? If so, then you might have to change your thinking regarding that idea, because Game for Windows - Live is official, and there's already a price involved.

According to the press release that's just hit the internet,

Games for Windows - Live will connect Windows gamers to over six million gamers already in the Xbox Live community. Then, launching in June, Shadowrun will for the first time connect Windows gamers with Xbox 360 players in cross-platform matches using a single service. Uno, releasing later in 2007, will also support cross-platform play between Windows and Xbox 360.

Cross-platform gameplay will force you to take up a US$ 49.95 Gold account, so expect more people pushing themselves to try that if they want to get the most out of Xbox/ GFW Live. On the other hand, Xbox Live Gold users already get the service with their own PCs, which makes it rather annoying if you're already behind the times.

While this is great and all for connecting XBox 360 and PC players, the repertoire of available games (which includes Halo 2 for Vista owners is rather limited, and you're making people pay to do something that usually ought to be free. If you're going to do it with such a small selection, can't you at least make some sort of Early Adopter discount for the first month or something? In any case, if you want to see what else is in store for GFW Live, you can check the read link below.

» 2 Accounts!

So if I have a Xbox Gold account do I have to buy one for Windows as well!

I think this is crap, multiplayer gaming on the PC should be free. I can't see many people paying $50 (probably £50 over here) just to play a couple of games online.

» Ops

Sorry, just read some more and it looks like Xbox Gold accounts get the Windows Live for "free".

Still, I don't think PC gamers will be happy

It's pretty ghey really...same 4 live on 360. My xbox is fantastic, i love it but i hate having to pay to play online...hence all my single player games...

If we are to pay, we should have more options and benefits of what we get for our money like cool freebies, special wallpapers and gamer pics and other sweet as things... music or cartoons or something.

Why not even have unranked games being free where as ranked ones you have to pay for. that would work. also, the games aren't moderated. played gow for free last weekend (in aus) and all these 14 yr olds are abusing everyone in almost every game i was in. i'm not paying to listen to some nerd try and give someone shyte...

just my 2 cents, holla back

» lots of stuff?

I wouldn't say theres lots of stuff... that's available for everyone.....what other reasons/benefits are there to purchase live over the free silver besides online games?

» This

This doesn't mean jack squat, Microsoft have no control over how PC users play their games, it will end up being a Microsoft games only thing which is fine.

» wow come on

wow guys, it 50 if u just start play on live but if u already hav an xbox membership to gold there no extra charges. and if you dont want to pay 50 bucks then just get live silver. mmmmmmkayyyy

guys, stop being retarted and read some more.

You ONLY have to pay to play against people on the 360. Normal PC to PC play is free. And any PC Game that is not under the Games For Windows brand will not follow under this so it will be free PC to PC play.

The ONLY thing you need a GFW Live subscription for is to play against 360 Users and to use the LIVE system to talk and download videos and all the other things that are on LIVE.

Yes the games list is small, but remember that 90% of the PC game companies have signed on to do games in the Games For Windows program so we will have more cross platform games in the future.

so once again. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR PC TO PC PLAY, THAT IS 100% FREE. and you get that with just a free silver membership, or dont have any membership at all and it will work fine. UT2004 works perfect on vista even online.

The 50 bucks is just for the Gold and you will need that for crossplatform. PC TO PC is free.

» well Microsoft

just killed any chance of getting PC games vs. Xbox 360 games big because no PC gamer is going to pay $50 a year just to play against someone on the 360 when they can just keep playing against other people on the PC for free

6 million of us already have Xbox Live Gold so that means there are already 6 million Windows Live Gold users. The more PC users that buy the 360, the more people that will realize it is a sweet deal to get both Windows and Xbox Gold for only $50

» This article is so wrong it's funny

"While this is great and all for connecting XBox 360 and PC players, the repertoire of available games (which includes Halo 2 for Vista owners is rather limited, and you're making people pay to do something that usually ought to be free. If you're going to do it with such a small selection, can't you at least make some sort of Early Adopter discount for the first month or something?"

QJ are you f*cking retarded? Well I already know the answer to that, YES! That is not at all how this works you fools, only PC vs console play (which Halo 2 for Vista doesn't even do) costs $50, and it includes regular XBL.

What I got from the article is that nothing is going to change, besides for the better. PC vs PC play will be free as it always has (trying to charge for that is like a death wish) and PC vs console play (which is new, never been done before) plus console vs console play will cost $50. No difference from before, no reason to complain. QJ, you make it sound like something bad is happening.

What I also got from that is that now instead of just getting XBL for $50 we get cross-platform play for no extra charge. That's great to me, XBL was already easily worth $50, but now it's fantastic.

» I don't understand people like you

What is there to hate about paying $50 for something as invaluable as Xbox Live? You can make that flipping burgers for a day, $50 a year is nothing.

by qwe - 2007-03-14 15:20
» You have that completely wrong

What's actually going to happen is

1. Diehard PC people who want to prove that KB/M beats controller any day will get XBL/Windows Live to do just that

2. PC fans who have not yet made the jump to consoles because there wasn't enough incentive will now that there is something like this. They'll get XBL on the 360 (the home of the FPS, the most popular PC game genre) plus Windows Live on the PC for the same low price.

Aside from many more Live subscribers because of this, I could actually see it selling consoles.
