Kinect voice recognition will be limited to four territories until 2011

knctApart from gestures and body movement, Kinect also relies on voice recognition and commands for input. The thing is, the system will only recognize your voice if you're from the US, the United Kingdom, Japan, or Mexico. For everyone else, Kinect will not understand a darn thing you're saying.

What makes this setup even worse is that Kinect will be region-locked to the same region as your Xbox 360. The lock basically keeps people from activating the voice recognition feature if they're not in the US, UK, Japan, or Mexico. How well you speak English will not matter.

Eurogamer reports that upon Kinect's launch this November, the device will only understand US English, British English, Japanese, and Mexican Spanish - each tied to their respective regions. The Canadians, the French, the Germans, and everyone else will have to wait until 2011 when succeeding updates provide additional language support.

I am Canadian. I find Natal to be fail from the start, but the one redeeming thing it had going was the voice. That seemed interesting. But if it doesn't work us here in the great white north I will continue to call fail

MS certainly can't blame the voice recognition software not recognising certain dialects for this, because all the raw data from pc voice recognition software is out there, so this has to be some kind of business decision.

i just read the article and us canadians are safe.

"Kinect will be locked to the same region as your Xbox 360"

i pretty sure canada and america are in the same region. it's still really stupid that they would region lock the device like that. i mean what do they intend that people do when a game uses voice recog like that fighting game that's coming out for it??

Hmmmm They forgot Japan. Probably because no one in Japan likes the xbox. Seriously though, Kinect is just a glorified super expensive eyetoy. And it works only when standing up, so basically, FAIL.

What about American, British, Mexican, or Japanese expats? Are they not allowed to use this either? And if it's region locked, does that mean that a Japanese person living in the States can't speak to it in Japanese? This whole thing sounds like a terrible idea. I can't even begin to imagine who thought up region locks when a simple warning screen would have sufficed.
