Ó

We've seen Microsoft's ultra verstile motion-sensing device strapped on top of a quadrocopter before, now check out its latest endeavor... the ability to drive.

The folks at the University of Bundeswehr Munich mounted the Kinect sensor on top of a remote-controlled car with a laptop riding on the back, loaded with a simplified version of the object-avoidance software based on MuCAR-3 to demonstrate the versatility of the device. To quote the team, "a planar inverse depth model of the ground surface is verified against the depth images provided by the Kinect sensor to build an occupancy grid of the robot's environment. The path the robot takes is then determined by a reactive navigation approach called "tentacles".

I'm really impressed with all the Kinect hacks lately, but what about the gaming side of the device? Hows the experience so far folks?

Why do they need kinect for this? Couldn't they have just used some normal cameras? Seems kinda stupid that people are just now trying this stuff with kinect when they could've done it a long time ago with any other camera - better ones at that.
