Karraker to Microsoft: "XBLVM a disservice"

KarrakerWhen the Xbox Live Video Marketplace was announced the other day, it sure did shake everyone's foundations. A lot of people were wowed, and a lot of the feedback was positive. Over on the blue corner though (ding-ding-ding!), Sony Computer Entertainment America PR chief David Karraker had something rather sour to say.

He had criticized Microsoft as, in a sense, alienating their lower-end customers (those with the US $ 299 system) with: "I think they are doing a disservice to their consumer base because they are ignoring all those people who bought the Core system." In this Core system, there isn't any HD attachment that could support the massive downloads that they're offering. He also mentioned that given a 20GB capacity in the system, 7GB of this is already taken up with pre-loaded content. Strange thing though is that he didn't point out the fact that 4GB of this 7GB can be deleted.

Anyways, he defends his statement by saying that the PS3 will have the hard drives built-in in the US $ 499 and US $ 599 units. "We would never segregate or shut out any of our consumers from our entertainment experience because they didn't buy the top of the line system," he continues. Their units will be available in two models: a 20GB and a 60 (we knew that). But how much of that is pre-loaded content (OS, shells, firmwares, etc.), he did not say.

Do we smell another flame war coming? [looks at smoke detectors]

yes thats a very good point, with PS3 needing 5-6gb installs for each game, what room would be left for any other content!

He also fails to mention that the PS3 HDD is not upgradable and that both the PS3 and 360 are capable of accessing data from USB drives.

Sony = clutching at invisible straws.

for the love of God, Sony...PLEASE shut the FVCK up!

Uhuh, but ps3 low-end model is 100 dollars more expensive than 360 high-end model ^_^

How are they being segregated when all they need to do is buy the hard drive?

taking little stabs at its competitors to promote their own console is more likely to hurt their own image than xbox

does sony have a video marketplace? ummm nobody knows ***** about ps3 online really...

by roseysdaddy - 2006-11-08 11:31
» well...

...not to burst your bubble, but Im no fanboy of any console, but i loved ffx and the mgs series. i also loved god of war and ive played so much gears of war my eyes are bleeding.

that being said, this time last year i was super excited about the cell processor and what sony was trying to do. i remember seeing a video of how a medical imaging company was using the cell to create 3d ct scans in seconds as compared to today where it is taking minutes to do the same fx with a roomsized server. i was very impressed. at this point though, i wont be buying one. this past year sony has done nothing but give me reason to HOPE that they fail.

i could care less that they're arrogant. i hope they ARE arrogant. I just hate seeing them take it out on me, you and all the consumers that THEY work for.

by drumercalzone09 - 2006-11-08 12:59
» such arrogance and accusations

For one, who bought a core system without an HDD?!?!? Secondly, it's not a disservice. Who ever said that downloading the movies is a REQUIREMENT?!?! I probably won't even do it because you can only play those movies on your 360, whereas a DVD can be taken to your friends house, or China, or to that 500" 1080p tv!!!

I respect Sony, they are a very reputable, succesful company, but they are becoming very accusing, whining, and arrogant lately. I hate that in people.

by soadnation - 2006-11-08 13:11
» disservice?

how is this a diservice to those with the core system? chances are if u are interested in downloading these then you already ahve the HDD. Also this is what Microsoft planed for. Those who just want to play games and not download extra stuff like demo and videos then they dont need the HDD. If you didnt want to download stuff in the begging and now you want to you can go out and buy a HDD. I realy dont see what sony is realy going at.

» Sony Spin Doctors

Sony is the one doing the diservice by forcing their buyers to pay for a hard drive even if they don't want it. With the 360 you have the option to get it with or without a hard drive. It's not forced on you. And if you decide later that you want one then you can go out and get one for $100. Come on Sony..

Why do they care? Sony acting retarded of late.

In the end, Xbox360 still cost more, by the time the PS3 is out everyone will already have spent 350 or 450 on the Xbox360 if they have Xbox Live.

Sony still has better exclusives. Splinter Cell isnt isnt exclusive anyways, its on every currently existing console. Xbox360, GC, PS2, PC.

Only double agent wont be on PS3, the next one will.

If Xbox360 has soo many good exclusives, why is the console not doing as well as projections?

by Vietone - 2006-11-08 17:10
» ..

The PS3 HDD is upgradeable. Check your sources again.

by Vietone - 2006-11-08 17:13
» ..

So you admit that the original Xbox was a disservice because it had a HDD?

So in your eyes, the original Xbox was a failure, and this new Xbox360 , is a winner.

by Vietone - 2006-11-08 17:17
» HDD

You can bet Sony will downplay anything that requires a user to have the HDD to use it. Microsoft did the same thing when the PS2 didnt have one so its funny to see all the Xbox360 owners downplay when Sony uses the HDD for better uses.

There isnt a confirmed game by any developer saying that its required for users to install game content.

Fact being, PS3 runs Linux, Yellowdog has a linux build specifically for the PS3.

Fact being having a HDD standard is a better then having an optional add-on. The Xbox360 proves that, unless someone here is going to admit the xbox360 is better without the HDD.

by gj - 2006-11-08 23:33
» Once again

Sony has nothing GOOD to say, and nothing good to say about THEIR OWN DAMN CONSOLE.

This company really needs to shape up, you don't even see Microsoft going this overboard. Sony just looks like a big ass now.

And once again, Vietone needs to stop posting.

by Lurker - 2006-11-09 04:53
» I agree 100% Tod

Well said, every x360 owner i know could care less about the PS3.

And again Vietone. Save your comments for your fellow Sony pals. No one here cares, hopefully the Ps3 will launch on shedule. So you can save us your useless, uneducated comments. Oh, and the Argument about price is so freaking old, and stupid. Anyone with half a brain know $399 for everything you need to play vs $599 for everything you need to play. hmmm. But what you failed to realize is that the 360 now comes with a game (PG3 or GRAW) comes with 3 months free cold and 1250 MS points. Obviously you havent even taken algebra yet.

by Lurker - 2006-11-09 04:57
» Exactly ted

Man is vietone a Sony sheep. I feel dumb just for reading his usless dribble. Vietone has to be like 14 or 15. No adult can be so dumb and blind.

by Mr. Common Sense - 2006-11-09 09:25
» yeah but

Sure you can upgrade your PS3 HDD. You have to void the warranty though. Usually (as in the case with PS2) it will have disc read errors right after the warranty expires. So, why not

» WoW

Are those the only titles people talk about when it comes to Sony?? FF and MGS and DMC, that's it, nothing else is ever mentioned along with the PS3..

By the way, Splinter Cell 5 is Windows exclusive, 360 and PC, no other platform, so you might wanna read an article once in a while...

As for the statements about the Marketplace, how can Sony even downplay MS, when PSLive has ripped off everything XBox Live has done??

MS Points - They have Sony points

Demo Downloads - Sony has it now (which can also come with a charge depending on if the dev. wants to charge for it)

XBoxLiveArcade - Sony has Genesis remakes in the works

GameVideo Downloads - Sony is doing that also now

I could go on, but you get the point...Sony has done their customers a disservice by not announcing anything about a system that drops in a week and especially the online component...Sony has to play catchup in that department, so what do they do, rip off the best online service out there, pretty innovative...

Not to mention the fact that if people want their games to load faster, it takes up 5 gigs of space to load the game onto the HDD...So all in all, really, how much space will you have given the 20GB HDD??

Is Sony doing a disservice to their 'core' buyers??

by Uh huh - 2006-11-09 21:37
» are you sure?

Ok... logically speaking if you didn't care you wouldn't post. So you do care, and PSFanboys ARE underyour skin. I just felt I would drive the nail deeper.
