Joining the pre-order bandwagon: the HD-DVD player

HD-DVD playerIn as much as there's a mad dash to pre-order the PS3 and the Wii, why not add some flair and let 360 participate in the pre-order hype? Wouldn't that make this holiday season even crazier? For the 360 gamers though, it won't be consoles up for pre-ordering.

Amazon has placed the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player back on the list of pre-orderable goodies. And as pre-orders go, there are limited stocks. Here's what they have to say:

Attention Amazon.com customers: Great news Xbox 360 fans - Amazon.com has secured extra allocation of the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player and are once again taking pre-orders. Supplies remain limited though, so pre-order yours today.

The HD-DVD player's release on November 7 is edging closer and closer. Do you have US$199 lying around? Good for you then! By this time next week, your Xbox unit will be an altar of home entertainment.

I am getting a ps3 and blue ray will be my High Def DVD format of choice.

I like how BD is more capasity too. I will get a blue ray burner for my computer... no need for hd-dvd at all really.

I would like to see the 360 die now please. Thank you. See you in hell.

I am defiantly getting it, got the 360, got the money waiting, got the HighDef Tv.

Dont care about the PS3, it pulls more electricity over one whole year and goes onto my electricity bill than I pay for xbox live.

So Bilbo, Go Yiff in hell. Triple Layer HD-DVD is 45 gigs, 5 gigs off, who the f' cares, I would only get this for movies anyways, Reading times would be a *****. (let alone BD is slower anyways)

How many people are ready to buy a piece of equipment that adds little to the console itself?

200 bucks for the HD-DVD add-on is ridiculous. The only way this will sell well is when someone cracks the method thats used and allows it to be used in the PC or Mac.

Blu-ray and HD-DVD are equal in terms of speed. Both are similair and both have advantages over the other. To say one is better then the other in terms of speed is like saying that one of the two exact same car is better then the other.

It all depends on the Data thats being stored on the disk.

Also there are already 4 layer Blu-ray disks. 100GB. So HD-DVD loses in terms of scalability. The cost of a 3 layer HD-DVD is alot more then a 2-layer Blu-ray.

Consider this, HD-DVD will "NEVER" be used for games.

I dont care about size of the disc, don't care about the speed.

I care that I just bought a $200 HD-DVD player for my 360. No matter if it will ever play games, dvd's are fine for now.

If the price dropped for the add-on, lets say, $60-$30 I can see Microsoft's future in their Games in HD-DVD.

i've completely lost interest in this site due to people like m. Nobody seems to know what the hell they are talking about anymore. They all sound like 5 year old kids who like to bash something because they don't have it. The PS3, 360, and the Wii are all good systems. Buy what you like and dont worry about others.

Because of all these comments, I'm now leaving this site for good. Way to juvenile for me.

also...

@ Lupin...

One thing I like about MS not forcing a HD-DVD or Blue ray drive, is that they are not making people like you who do not own an HDTV spend a lot of extra cash on something that will not benefit you at all. People who say you need these new formats for next gen obviously don't know what they are talking about. It is nice to have the option rather then spend all your money.

Later guys, I'm done with this place after a year and a half of reading QJ's sites.

Obviously it is the perfect option for users who have a 360 and don't want to spend 500 bucks on toshiba's full blow HD-DVD player. You are thinking of this drive too much as an accessory to a gaming console. When in fact it is an accessory to a media powerhouse then when combined with Media Center, Xbox Live, and all other features, really gives you all the media needed in one box. I can watch, record, and pause live tv with my xbox, now watch HD-DVDs from this new drive that costs 300 dollars less then toshiba other HD-DVD player. That is where the market is, and just because you are not seeing it, doesn't mean the market isn't their. Get your facts straight before you make these assumptions.

I don't want to pay $500 for an HD-DVD player!

This is only $200 and does the same thing!

Do the math retards thinking it is a waste.

I hear ya man, it's almost not worth joining the "conversations" here....I just shake my head sadly at these people.

ANYONE who blindly accepts ANYTHING at face vaule, or for what they've been told (ie. ANYONE touting how great the PS3 is, since it hasn't been released, as well as anyone who says it sucks) is a freaking moron and I can do nothing but ignore them.....so that means i'm ignoring 99% of the posts on this board.....which sucks.

If this is a general overview of how the youth of today think, i'm scared.....very scared....

I don't even want an HD player, so I'm not going to buy it....and now I have $200 extra and am still playing my next gen games.

See how it works sony fan boi's ? This is why they did not force the format on us in an attempt to make money in another division of their company (Sony Pictures). Seriously MS doesn't give a ***** which format wins, and just chose HD because it was not BD, and really only added the HD-player add-on because they listen to the wants of their customers.......

# Small MarketVietone 2006-11-04 14:41
By the end of the year the amount of people who will fall in the market for the add-on will be less then 10 million.

Of those less then 10 million, over 90% consider the PS3 to be expensive. And therefore the add-on for the Xbox360 will make the console just as expensive.

That leaves maybe 1 million people who can justify the purchase of the HD-DVD addon.

Not to mention the noise factor of the XBox360. The general consumer will choose the Toshiba over the Xbox360 if they don't have a Xbox360. Only those few who own an Xbox360, and can justify the purchase of a 200 add-on will purchase the HD-DVD player.

"And therefore the add-on for the Xbox360 will make the console just as expensive."

You are still aren't getting the picture. Don't think of it as a part of the 360. Think of it as a separate HD-DVD palyer that instead of going straight into your tv it goes into your 360. Sure MS makes this thing, but it shouldn't be lump a part of the 360 that you just spent another 200 bucks on.

It is a fully functional HD-DVD player.

and of course the general consumer would buy the 500 dollar toshiba. The point is if your a 360 owner and want happen to have an HDTV and feel like watching HD Movies, then MS has given you a chance to buy a drive that is 300 bucks less then the Toshiba player.

Your still looking at this as an add on, like most people are. sure it gets added to your console. but it does a completely separate thing.

And this can do quite more than a toshiba anyways. The noise factor means nothing to me when I have 5.1 surround sound.

actually only reason M$ didn't force HD-DVD onto consumers is because they wanted to release the 360 earlier then the ps3, which is why they couldn't incorporate the hd-dvd into the 360.

So in other words, the 360 is current-gen sh1te that was rushed to release and is riddled with bugs and flaws that are still apparent after 1 year of release, which shows how crap M$ are. There are still reports of overheating, red ring of death, and even their newest update bricked many 360's (even those that did not have mod).

playstation 3 will have the same problems, but worse.

All machines have defects, plain and simple. If the fall update crashed one system, it will crash them all, or a vast majority or them, unless the one was a defect, in which case it was the fall update that brought it out.

Anyways, PS3 will have defects, it's inevitable, but happens with every system, and the more complex the system, the more chances of defect.....
