Jeff Minter to stop making games due to poor Space Giraffe sales? - Image 1

Jeff Minter, founder of software studio Llamasoft and most known for llamas-laden shoot 'em ups, just posted a short update over at his personal blog detailing his frustrations about the fans' reactions to Space Giraffe.

The game has been released on Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade (XBLA service) for a couple of months now but the current sales state and reception are not what Minter had in mind when he first came up with Space Giraffe. He said:

Not seeing a lot of reason to continue even trying to make games, at this point, when a remake of Frogger, one of the worst games in the history of old arcade games, can outsell Space Giraffe that we put so much love and effort into, by more than ten to one, in one week.

OK, we get the message. All you want on that channel is remakes of old, shite arcade games and crap you vaguely remember playing on your Amiga. We'll shut up trying to do anything new then. Sorry for even trying.

Prior to this, it was revealed back in October that Jeff Minter is currently re-designing GridRunner for release on XBLA as well. We are quite uncertain if this latest development will affect other Minter's projects.

» I'm probably one of the few who agree with him that Frogger did suck, but...

Space Giraffe is worse. Cry more Jeff Minter, cry more.

» an element of truth

OK his game was regarded by most as a failure so therefore he should not pass the blame onto others.

However the truth in his statement is that a great number of people do seem to be satisfied with rehashing old *****e.

In one sense the 360 and the PS are guilty of regurgitating old games for new profit to help bolster their respective online costs. Is this wrong is another argument altogether but it does seem to show that the high end graphics and smart AI demanded by many gamers is equalled by the demand for simple and fun

kids stuff. In this respect the Arcade xbox is maybe not such a bad idea and as for holiday gifts parents can now give their kids points to download games of choice.

With that said I come back to "Space Giraffes" Kids and gamers alike were just not that impressed with it. So although old games are being rehashed and a high number of downloads are being made developers should remember that this is not nostalgia on the part of just older gamers but also proof that those older games did possess a particular quality that even today is still relevant.
