Japan Remains Lukewarm To Xbox 360 |

Despite efforts by Microsoft to jumpstart Xbox 360 sales in Japan by releasing a Japanese 360 Core Pack, the console's market performance remained sluggish. Media Create Co. reported that from September 4 to 9, the Xbox 360 sold only 1,094 units in Japan. To put that in proper perspective, the Nintendo DS Lite sold 113,831 units while 29,141 PSPs were sold during the same period.
Even the PS2 sold 19,882 units. With the Wii and the PS3 looming in the horizon, the future doesn't look too bright for the Xbox 360.
Naturally, with so few Japanese Xbox 360 owners, none of the titles specific for the console were selling at the same level as DS titles, which dominated the top ten best selling games chart.
Traditionally, the Japanese market loves its own products and never really warms up to most western technology. Judging by the chilly reception, the Xbox 360 is no exception to the rule.

first off I don't think the 360 failed just because it is made in America, surely both the Xbox & Xbox 360 failed because they are not aimed at the Japanese market, the consoles are way too big for Japanese tastes and most of the games on both console are FPS and American sports games. Also the frankly poor advertising campaigns for the 360 in Japan would turn everyone off their consoles...
secondly to the douchebag would said Japan is gonna be China's *****es, wait a few more years and America is gonna be China's lapdog. As your economy continues to fail and they continuing shrinking all off your export markets while growing their's, then it's your arse getting ready for the Chinese *****!

Anyway, whilst it's not all down to the XBox & XBox 360 being American products, I do agree with others that being an American console is the MAIN problem for Microsoft in Japan. Had exactly the same hardware come from Nintendo or Sony, huge numbers of Japanese gamers would have happily purchased the console.
I applaud MS for not giving up on Japan, since to do so would be a great mistake, even if the gamers there are not interested at the moment. One or two games could change everything, I can't see it happening anytime soon, but it is still possible, so it will be interesting to see where MS goes from here.

jap = american haters. i don't blame them, as a canadian I hate americans too :)
as far as the ipod comment, the ipod is unique. none of the other mp3 players even come close to it. all the same, the ipod doesn't sell in japan as much as it does in the states.

The 360 launched their with practically no games that interested that audience and once again the console became a joke out east. Now, even *good* games won't be enough to fight nearly 12 months of bad reputation.
It all comes down to track record, the Wii and the PS3 will rule out east as they have a great track record there and the Xbox does not. Microsoft should have waited to launch there once they had the games, but that's the price you pay to be first.

The Xbox had the same problem. Remember it didnt sell well until long after the release. It was a large console. It didnt have DVD playback ans a standard, you had to buy that stupid DVD dongle. And it was bulky, especially the controller. They had to design the S controller for the Xbox and that became the standard in america too.
The Xbox360 is large, loud and doesnt offer the features of space saving.
For one when you buy the Xbox360, its big, you have the console itself and the power brick. You have very limited placement options and with japanese apartments being smaller then a Bedroom, you have to be able to place stuff out of the way.
The addons make it less and less appealing as you add more. Japanese people like everything integrated, They like to be able to buy something that has more featurs for its size. Americans do as well, why do people keep buying $300 phones that have the same features as their old phones, but just a little smaller?
Noise, Noise, Noise. The damn thing is loud. For anyone who has their own bedroom, tell me that the Xbox360 isnt loud. Like i said japanese apartments are very small, so the loud Xbox360 is very noticable even during gameplay in those small apartments.
The PS3 has tons of features packed into a system thats not much larger then the Xbox360. On top of that everything is integrated and the system will look flush with other electronics like recievers and set top boxes.
You think Japanese RPGs will skyrocket Xbox360 sales. Probably not, Xbox360 will never suceed in Japan unless they get a team of Japanese designers to help MS redesign the console to appeal to Japanes trends.
