Jaffe on Halo: 'I don't get it' |

When not working on premiere titles like God of War, David Jaffe is just another gamer like the rest of us. Or at least, that's what most would figure out after spending some time reading his personal blog. His latest post is an IM conversation with a designer from Sony, but it's not about the dynamics of a game or how to make hardware work - it's about their opinions on Halo with no PR obligations attached.Jaffe seems to be among those guys who enjoy Halo, but don't believe it's worth the attention. Here's what he told Sony's Adam Orth:
I just don't get HALO. I don't think the story is all that special,
don't think the world or characters matter much. I don't know if I am
simply not 'getting it' and it really is all that...or Microsoft has
simply purchased rabid fan reactions for what is a great game but
nothing more.
Orth, on the other hand, is not very fond of Halo; their conversation kicked off because of his dislike of a Halo 3 ad, after all. He made his opinions with strong words, but we'll leave them on Jaffe's blog. Find the entire post by clicking on the Read link below.

To answer his question, I think the religious following halo has is 90% due to the multi-player aspect of it...which he must not have gotten into much....it has by far the best and most refined (especially with halo 3) multiplayer experience of any console FPS....and even PC (if you can get over the lack of keyboard and mouse)...
But I still see where he is comming from and all, and liked the fact he ragged on MOH abit....so you can tell he is definately being as objective as possible.
This Adam guy seems very spiteful and angry, but hey, that's cool too....he probably got pwned by 14yr olds too many times online...

I can't get a decent shot out when someone shouts "BOOM!" into my headset (can't wake up the sleeping housemates) and then a slug hits me smack dab in the middle of my forehead.
Story-wise, it is good, although I think I may be the wierd one here. I liked Halo: Combat Evolved's story better than Halo 2's story.
I guess the story could have been better. I just wish that Earth wasn't so helpless. The horror with The Flood captured me. I guess I was longing for something like AvP and then Halo came along.
Best part of the gameplay for me was darting through the library, hoping my magazines ran out only when they'd stop charging. ^_^

I remember kicking it late at night after work for Halo 2's unveiling...that was quite a trip. I didn't have an XBlowx, but my buddy did and we waited for his CE. I remember we played the game until the sun came up. Multi-player, co-op, you name it...I pwnt his ass on it. But the thing I hated most was during the cut-scenes, some of the textures appeared a second later after everything was displayed. Probably it was because of his huge HDTV. Nonetheless, the game was pretty good.
Not doing it this year though...I'll wait for Unreal Tournament 3. RAWR!

the fact that he prefers halo 2 to halo 1 shows he didnt get it in the first place. I dont know any big time halo fan who prefers the second cause it lost what made halo so amazing in the first place, that feeling that you were actually running round this giant mysterious alien ring as all chaos broke loose was awesome and each level had such a unique atmosphere to it.
halo 2 was saved by its great multiplayer but i think most halo fans would hope halo 3 be a little more like halo 1.

I don't hate people who dislike or even hate Halo, and I'd definitely agree that it is not the best game ever, there are quite a few much better game series. But Adam Orth and some of those commentors are just idiots.
I don't care if it's your opinion, if you say the Medal of Honor series is better than the Halo series you are an idiot, plain and simple.
I also didn't get how the ads were disrespectful to real-life vets. Well, I did, I guess I just disagree completely. They are not belittling war and it's veterans' sacrifices just because it's used as the subject of a video game commercial.
Props to Jaffe though for keeping cool and stating his opinions about Halo RESPECTFULLY, unlike Mr. Orth. I can't comprehend how anyone could possibly think Halo 2's story is better than Halo 1's though.
And for a quick laugh, here's a list of games Orth has worked on:
Medal of Honor: European Assault (2005)
Medal of Honor: Rising Sun (2003)
Kinetica (2001)
PaRappa the Rapper 2 (2001)
Twisted Metal: Black (2001)
Alien Resurrection (2000)
With the exception of TM: Black, they all suck ass. Halo > Adam Orth's life

Now one cannot put two games like halo and god of war aside, it cant be done in a specific kind of way that is... What i mean is that in general terms they can be compared, like graphics, audio, and most importantly story (plot) strenght. If I was to rate halo 3's graphics I would give it a very generous 7.5/10(after seing other games on the 360 eg. GOW). If I was to rate God of war graphics i would give it a 9/10 (and its on a last generation console!). Regarding the story i think i dont even have to give you a rating because we all know who's the winner is...
Anyhow finishing up, If a guy like Jaffe thinks so little of halo (remember he created God of War) then one has to say to him self ''hmm maybe this dude knows what h is talking about..''
Keep in mind that his creation will never have to compete with halo because both games are exclusive to different consoles so he has nothing to gain or to loose for that matter..
Now to all those deeply religious halo guys dont get all worked up on my post! Its just my thoughts. And have fun with halo 3!!

There are a LOT of people who can't get into HALO. However, there are a lot more who can. If you don't like the game, then fine...if you do, fine. I'm not sure this is exactly earth shattering news, though.

Honestly who cares what this guy thinks. I thought halo sounded lame back when I was a pc only FPS type guy and then when I went over to a lan party and played it I was hooked. The graphics aren't perfect but the game is stinkin smooth. Everything about the game works very well and it is very well balanced for a console. Graphics mean very little to me and gameplay/story is much more important. Hurray for godofwar who has to add sex and gore to their games to get 14 year olds to play them. Halo3 works on gameplay and fun and doesn't need these sort of cheap thrills to get customers.
