It works: SATA optical drive on Xbox 360

Team modfreakz made waves yesterday after it showed evidence on how an Xbox 360 can run on a consumer SATA DVD drive with the original BenQ firmware. Now this discovery was first claimed a month ago, which was preceded by another mod using a Hitachi drive, but it was the second video released yesterday that presented proof that Microsoft's Xbox 360 console would run backup games and not compromise Xbox Live access.

Team modfreakz used a Philips DVD drive, a product available for PC users, and utilized the actual firmware from a retail Xbox 360 DVD drive - the BenQ VAD6038. So it's basically a Philips drive running on retail Xbox 360 firmware. Take note that this feat requires no actual modification to the game console, allowing the machine to log in to Xbox Live. Finally a solid solution (detectable fw mods suck).

So backups work, Good. Warranty on your console is now zero as the seals are broken and the console has been tampered with, Bad.

As stated earlier in another thread the use of pirated games is a choice that the individual makes. However when a game costs 60 USD I would appreciate the ability to make a backup so that my original stays free of any damage risks.

My personal choice would be to save to a hard drive as was possible with the original xbox. The rights an wrongs of the above hack are an issue people could discuss forever but as a consumer if my 60 buck game gets scratched during use I have no rights. I am expected to purchase another copy. Until this issue is solved I can only comment, Hats off in respect to the modders.

This may not be what MS or Sony wants to hear from a consumer but if we pay for a game and it ceases to function correctly then there should be a policy of return the game with your receipt and receive a replacement without charge.

And I would go so far as to say that this policy should be valid for the life cycle of the console.

if you own the game and make a back-up copy, you no longer have to worry about software piracy. if you rent a game, make a copy, and then own the game that way, that is WAY illegal and your fooked. same goes for movies and cd's. AND emulated games. if you OWN the game or media you can make ONE copy LEGALLY

so the only thing that this video shows is that he took a computer optical drive and got it to work with his 360. what he DIDN'T show was him logging on with his xbox 360 live account, the steps he took before he installed it, if he needed to flash the motherboard, etc. so i am glad that he is showing people to take a modded xbox 360 online so they can get banned. good job man.
