Inside Earth Defense Force 2017: enemies |
Ó
Earth Defense Force 2017 is slated to ship this March 2007 to the U.S. for the XBox 360, so Erik Brudvig of IGN features an inside look into the enemies you'll have to face as a soldier of the Earth Defense Force, courtesy of D3 Publisher of America. Unfortunately, this Japanese-developed game wasn't very creative with the enemies' names. The collective name for the enemy in the game is "The Ravagers" (long, disturbing silence). It would probably explain the game's rather similarly lackluster title, though it was changed from Earth Defense Force 3 for the U. S. version. But you'd have to admit, it is pretty straightforward.
The enemies vary in nature and type. There are insects, robots and ships. They aren't like anything we've never seen before in movies - or in real life for that matter. The ants come in two varieties, for instance: black and red (controlling sarcastic remark). The black are the weakest and the red are tougher, since they can take more damage. They are pretty large, though, so no wimpy remark can be insulting enough to take them down.
Assault spiders, on the other hand, are even better creation, although these city-block jumping, web spitting machines aren't exactly impressive. They don't even look very threatening...until you see one up close. These little critters take down jets and helicopters and can slow anything on the ground with their sticky webs.
Ravager gunships are a change from the insect menace. The silver variety is the ordinary, staple assault ship. The red packs more firepower and armor. They lack fast mobility, but that doesn't stop them from locking on to something...like you.
Flying saucers, like the one a discontented wife can make, also make a scene. They are massive transports hovering over cities, carrying the insects and robots for ground assaults.
And my, what a big robot they carry. The Walking Arm "Hektor" is a pretty large one to boot, and it is known to lay waste to cities several kilometers away. What's with the "walking arm," you ask? Well, that's because despite having two of them, each of them is a big freakin' weapon. There is a fast-firing plasma Gatling gun in one arm, and a plasma cannon in the other for long distance fun.
