That's right, Microsoft is celebrating the first birthday of its baby, the Xbox 360 this November 22. As a treat to everyone on this oh-so-special day, Microsoft recently announced that fans can now start downloading videos and episodes of their favorite TV shows via the Xbox Live Marketplace.

movie nights! At the moment, content that's available at the Marketplace include episodes of shows from Adult Swim, CBS, Comedy Central, CW, MTV, MTV2, Nicktoons, Nickelodeon, Spike TV, UFC, VH1, and Warner Bros. Full-length movies from Paramount as well as Warner Bros. can also be downloaded by Xbox Live Silver and Gold subscribers.

As for the prices of the downloads, Microsoft has already (and finally) announced the pricing of the new content which would be as follows:
  • HDTV TV show episodes - 240 MS points per episode
  • Standard TV show episodes - 160 MS points per episode
  • HDTV New release movies - 480 MS points
  • Standard New release movies - 320 MS points
  • HDTV Classic Feature films - 360 MS points
  • Standard Classic Feature films - 240 MS points
  • Downloading an HDTV version of any title will also entitle the user to download the Standard version for absolutely FREE.
Parents also won't have to worry about their children downloading inappropriate content on the family's 360, as the Family Settings feature can block out content depending on the video ratings.

With 1000 MS Points costing US$ 12.50, all these may not be a bad deal, so start getting your Cheetos and your Mountain Dew ready, as movie nights are bound to follow.

» well

lets see... an hd movie is about 6GB... that is a quite bit...

so it isn't going to be slow

if you have downloaded a demo that is a GB big you know it will be a long download... but who cares...

480 pts is a grat price for a 14 day rental of an HD movie.. i mean 14days and 24 hours after you start watching it.. not bad...

great job Microsoft!!!!:D

» uhh

no ***** it's 6gb, but it shouldn't take sooo long. i could pirate the movie in at least 2 hours...the movie i'm dling is going to take at least 6 hours and i'm using cable. microsoft sucked it up with this one.

» lolz

Bill Gates has nothing to do with it you kidiot.

But yeah, these servers are complete crap. It takes me forever to even make the transaction to order a movie. It also took over 3 hours to download a 1.5gb movie. This is annoying, and unless they fix it, this video marketplace is going to fail big time.

Where's it coming from??? We got all these options for download and not even 20 FULL gb to store it on??

Are USB hard drives compatable?

» Service with a side of Errors

Having decided to test this glorious service (cough) I ran into first a failure to download with a nice message that stated that my points were used, and tough *****, luckly it appears that it was intelligent enough to at least recall my transaction and allowed me to attempt to download it again. Doing so, failed yet once more only by simply not downloading at all. I gave up and decided to tinker with a demo I recently downloaded, after that i decided to try once more for the fun of it, while it downloaded something, it was a far cry from what I ordered. Seems to off to a good start (haha).

Hopefully everyone else is having better experiences with it than I am, but over all, I'd be wary of it right now until they get the bugs taken care of.

» Don't Forget!

This service has just been released! everyone will be on their trying it out and downloading like mad! give it a few days and the speeds should go up and waiting time down.

» Extremely slow

I waited one hour for V for Vendeta in HD to get to 4% (!), only to have the thing cancel itself. Upon re-downloading it and waiting another hour for it to get to 10%, I get a "V for Vendeta could not be downloaded" message, and it cancels. I tried re-downloading it (AGAIN) at 2 AM, and by 3 AM it was at 25%. The lesson here is: DO NOT DOWNLOAD MOVIES AT BUSY TIMES. It will only lead to pain. Just leave it on over-night, save yourself the torment.

To the guy above me, I don't care how large server load is, the crap should download faster than 1% every 15 god-damned minutes, even at busy hours.

» At least you have the option

Here in the UK we can't even access the marketplace and may never be able to! So enjoy your slow download times because you're lucky to have any downloads at all!

» slow...

either video market place is hosted somewhere different than the demos and such, or the bandwidth is being throttled seriously.

a 1gig demo still downloads pretty fast, but a 220meg tv episode takes way over an hour. i can usually download the same size file in about 5 mins.

if the video marketplace can't handle the relatively small number of users attempting to use it now, how is it going to handle christmas day?

excellent job otherwise m$, just give us more bandwidth damnit...

» I think

I think microsoft just fixed it, but if they did not just yet it will get better I remember last year when game demos took forever, now they are much quicker and yes the tv and movie downloads are not on the same servers as game demos.

» actually
