Robot Entertainment has been getting some flak recently for supposedly releasing unlocks instead of actual new content for Halo Wars. The Strategic Options DLC's small file size (2MB) led to the unlock accusation. The usual story, really.

Dave Pottinger, The game's lead designer, however, has fired back against the accusations. On the official Halo Wars forum, Pottinger posted this message:

None of the DLC was on the disc when it shipped. The game modes are a small download because they are rules. There is some new content, but it's obviously a different type of content compared to a map. Also, the recent patch added a bunch of missing support/engine groundwork for both DLCs.

The Strategic Options DLC contains three new game modes and is priced at 800 MS Points.

Should have been included.

Oh well, who bought Halo Wars anyways? It's a terrible RTS.

» Not a terrible RTS.

But compared to other RTS's, it's not great by any means. Just popular because of the Halo tag.

that doesn't matter much. The sheer fact that could have included in the retail version pisses of so many users. But it was to happen eventually with the online consoles. Releasing only the half of the game and then rip off the consumers again with paying the DLC. No wonder everyone thinks the old games were better. At least they were COMPLETE.

» True that.

It's pretty sad, to be honest. Release 80% of the game for an already insane amount of cash $50+ and then charge more for things that should have been there to begin with.

What's with that.
